Show moreThe objective of IPRO 362 is to understand the environment in which disaster victims are found and the human needs involved. Additionally, understanding the medical standards of sanitation, sterility and environmental control conditions that are expected in an operating room are all central to developing a humancentered design. In order to be able to ensure the success of the M.O.R.E. Life project, design needs to focus on the following: MEDICAL PERSONNEL •Provide the necessary tools and equipment which medical personnel need in order to perform medical interventions •Identify and provide a surgical environment satisfying necessary sanitary, given the environmental limitations in a disaster relief situation. STRUCTURE/PORTABILITY •Work to make the mobile operating room (M.O.R.E) design as compact as possible, while still keeping sanitary standards as high as possible. FILTRATION •Design an effective filtration system that will allow for environmental control within the structure. •Address sanitation by taking into account airborne pathogens can be filtered out of the air. POWER •Design an energy-efficient power system for the mobile operating theatre, considering alternative energy sources. DESIGN •Create and refine a design for the operating theatre, including a carrying case. •Replicate standard operating room conditions in the mobile version. •Conduct a market analysis to identify key stakeholders, advantages and disadvantages of existing products and current costs.

Show moreThe Urban Wood Reclamation project is an enormous movement that has a great number of current supporters and the promising future of many more. Our objectives will work in conjunction with the grand scheme of the project. Overall, our combined purpose is to promote the use of reclaimed timber. In this IPRO, we would like to study the finer details of the project. We will discuss the grand picture as well as the minute details with experts in the field. In the end, we hope to be one step closer to our goal of awareness.

Show moreIPRO 327’s objective is to create a complete set of drawings and specifications of a water distribution system for Pignon, Haiti that can be easily built and used by the town. This is a continuation of a spring 2007 IPRO, which completed mapping of the town. We now seek to design the physical water distribution system that can be sustained for twenty years. To do this, we have identified several factors significant to the success of this system that we will be focusing on. These include finding a water source that can provide a continuous and adequate flow of water, design of a pump and the power source to run it, design of water kiosks and faucets, and design of the piping network with erosion protection. User fees will also be determined for both public and private water lines. The water system will also be designed so that its output may grow with the population of the town over the next twenty years. Through our work, we hope to create a system that can be implemented by Pignon to provide a clean and reliable water source for its citizens.

Show moreWe review the signatures for the soft collective dynamics in highest-multiplicity ultrarelativistic p-Pb collisions and show that the effects are well described in a three-stage model, consisting of the event-by-event Glauber initial conditions, viscous 3+1D hydrodynamics, and statistical hadronization. In particular, we discuss the ridges in two-particle correla- tions in the relative azimuth and pseudorapidity, the elliptic and triangular flow coefficients, and the mass hierarchy of observables sensitive to flow.

Show moreUsers of speech recognition technology often hyperarticulate (i.e., exaggerate) their speech in response to recognition failures and subsequent requests to repeat (e.g., \I'm sorry, I didn't understand, please repeat the input."). Hyperarticula- tion usually leads to further recognition failure. The goal of the current project is to develop a protocol for testing di erent talker characteristics of voice prompts in speech recognizers with an aim towards minimizing hyperarticulated speech from users. This IPRO is equally suited to students interested in the more tech- nical aspects of acoustic phonetics and voice recognition as well as the cognitive aspects of predicting user behavior in technology-mediated environments.

Show moreThe goal of IPRO 320 is to create an online professional network for school teachers at the kindergarten through twelfth grade level to allow for the sharing of ideas, lesson plans and other professionally relevant information. This is a continuing project which saw limited success in the previous semester in that a functioning web site was constructed based on surveys of public school teachers but it saw very little use. This semester, the planned approach is to build on the research generated last semester by performing additional market research with teachers. Following that, IPRO 320 will rework much of the previous web site by refining some of the features, adding additional ones as the research indicates and improving the website in general, both functionally and aesthetically.

The first semester will be a period where the students and faculty decide which route to take, research the feasibility, research old or create new designs, structure a plan, and set up the contacts necessary to achieve one or more of the following: (1) Plan and design a clinic, (2) Plan and design a school, (3) Research problems and difficulties that current relief organizations have been encountering and develop viable solutions, (4) plan and design (and build?) cost-effective homes in collaboration with other universities (e.g. University of Houston).

Show moreIn the disclosed embodiments the video signal is recorded on successive longitudinal tracks with high frequency bias. The sound may be recorded transversely on adjacent tracks or may be recorded with the video as pulse modulation in the horizontal blanking intervals. The video bias frequency is selected so as to avoid beat notes with the video signal. The horizontal and vertical sync signals may be amplified separate from the composite video and then added thereto so as to record sync signals of increased amplitude. The picture signal from a television receiver may be recorded without further amplification.

Show moreThe intent of the IPRO 315 is to design a large-scale structure. The focus of this IPRO is structural analysis. The advisors of this group thought it would be even more interested if IPRO 335 and IPRO 315 would mesh together to create a large green structure. The intent of IPRO 335 is to design a “green” and innovative building using the skills and input of students studying different majors at Illinois Institute of Technology. Our team has decided to design a replacement apartment building for Gunsaulus Hall on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. Innovative technologies and practices will be researched and employed to design a “green” building. The decision to design a building for the IIT campus came about because it is an area that all of the team members could relate to and have a more realistic grasp on the project. For the remainder of the semester the two groups are planning on coordinating with each other on each step of the design process.
