Show moreRecreational fishing in the United States generates over a billion dollars of economic output and providing well over a million American’s with jobs. There are many variations of fishing hooks available that retain the same basic shape and structure, the most popular examples being, the standard J-hook and the standard treble hook. However, there are many limitations associated with existing fishing hooks. One such limitation is that fishing hooks are not able to reliably hold the fish after embedding. Introducing a barb to the hook helps resolve this issue, doing so however creates problems when setting the hook and furthermore, barbs can cause damage to the fish during the removal of the hook. Another concern is that contemporary fishing hooks have problems with snagging on nearby rock formations, algae, weeds, or other vegetation in the water.

Show moreDuring the milling operations at an industrial steel producer like A. Finkl & Sons (Chicago, IL), a substantial amount of time and money is lost due to the fact that cutting inserts break and without warning. The goal of this project is to devise an effective means by which a cutting insert breakage event can be quickly and reliably detected, thereby minimizing damage to the steel and other cutting inserts, and also freeing technicians to attend multiple machines at a time. This increases the productivity of their operations, and it has the potential to save A. Finkl & Sons substantial costs per year in time lost in rework and prematurely broken cutting inserts.

Show moreThe mission of IPRO 363 - Language Link is to develop a social network website that connects IIT students to learn languages, integrate cultures and build friendships. The basis for this solution is an online framework allowing students to build a personal profile, matching people based on common interests, goals, schedules, and other factors, so as to promote and improve language learning via natural every-day interaction and use of languages. The envisioned efficacy of Language Link is based on the theory of immersion, which is widely regarded as the best way to learn a language[1]. As the developers of the website, we will provide a matching system based on pairing algorithms in order to allow each user to build a relationship with a student most equipped to facilitate language learning, so that the immersion process can really begin. Language Link will not be designed to equip users with lessons, translations or vocabulary; rather, the site is envisioned as a social networking site connecting those that are interested in teaching, learning and studying languages. We plan to start off providing this service to IIT affiliates. As the project progresses we hope to extend Language Link to other city colleges as well.

Show moreThe project aims to convert the urban wood waste into an environmentally friendly, marketable product. The primary focus this semester will be to create visibility for urban wood through the connection of products made from urban wood to the end users. The primary drawback for urban wood is the perception of “no value” attached to the wood, which results in an epidemic of wasted wood, since nobody wants to use it. This project will research and organize possible production methods and uses for urban wood, which could create a business opportunity and jump-start the urban wood demand/market in Chicago.

Show moreThe goal of IPRO 317 is to create an operational and business model for Urban Forestry Management. Presently, the future of Chicago’s urban forest is in question. While few refute the claim that trees are good for our community, allocating the resources to properly maintain or even expand our urban forest remains beyond our grasp. Our team seeks to make the urban forest a viable commodity in addition to its status as an asset. This would include examining the problem as a closed loop process as well as the sustainable harvest potential of the urban forest. The overall goal would be to create a business model that would increase the number of trees within the city, turn the revenue loss of tree maintenance into a revenue gain, and create a self sustaining model which will have the ability to stand on its own.

Show moreOur objectives are fairly straightforward. If the genetic code can be called its own language, then we want to become fluent in it. The current technology does not allow us the ability to “write our own novel” (i.e. make a new organism from scratch), but what we can do is write our own pamphlet. This semester, we are trying to complete our test case, which is to create a colony of Escherichia coli that flash different colors all in unison. Once we complete this task, we hope to export this system into higher organisms, such as Zebrafish (Danio rerio). We are also seeking to move forward conceptually by planning long term goals for the Ipro, such as the development of not just test cases, but new, useful organisms.

Show moreThis is the first of a two-semester phased project that will begin with technical and market feasibility study, and progress through conceptual design. The second phase is planned for Fall 2004 in order to refine the design concepts and progress through prototype development and experimentation. Mr. James Adducci is very interested in working with this team of students to explore the potential for an idea he has been developing that is related to muscle development, monitoring and control during exercise. Mr. Adducci has experience as a personal trainer and has also been studying various research publications that focus on muscle development. Combined with discussions that Mr. Adducci has had with Professor Opara, there is an opportunity to explore the potential for designing a system that is integrated with clothing in order to actively and selectively control blood pressure in the vicinity of certain muscle groups, while monitoring blood pressure and other critical parameters. As a starting point for the summer 2004 project, Mr. Adducci will share his ideas with the team for the various functional components of the smart clothing system, and the benefits of each. This includes the type of materials and the type of sensing, feedback and control functions that would be integrated to create the system that would monitor blood pressure and other critical parameters. The team will explore the state-of-the-art of wearable sensing systems, including the identification of currently available products that have similar functionality. The team will then proceed to investigate the feasibility of the concept in the context of: (a) its scientific validity and engineering constraints, (b) the availability of the enabling technologies to create a system, (c) the potential for miniaturization and economic manufacture of the system, (d) the regulatory, safety and intellectual property issues that will guide its development, and (e) other factors that may be identified. The results of this investigation will be a set of design requirements. It is anticipated that the actual development of prototypes of one or more viable design concepts will be undertaken in the fall 2004 semester.

Show moreThe main goal of the fall semester of IPRO 331 is to build off the previous two IPROs in terms of scientific and global data while further enhancing the knowledge of the general public throughout Chicago and the greater Chicago area. The team plans on utilizing the past data (which is presented on iGroups) and creating a more streamlined presentation that covers all of the main topics while enabling the group to add more relevant and interesting information. It is the group’s philosophy that there is no reason to re-do what past groups have done in terms of research when it is already made available. This will allow the group to focus more heavily on the main goal of community outreach. In terms of the community outreach, it is still the same goal as the previous IPROs to reach as many possible candidates as the semester allows. Another one of the group’s philosophies is that reaching as many people as possible is the key to making this semester’s IPRO successful.

Show moreDuring the summer 2009 semester, IPRO 358 plans to develop mock-ups of the Delta Hook Technology (DHT) and to lay the foundation for a business model for Sparrowhawk, LLC, an early stage company. Sparrowhawk has investigated the concept for an innovative fishing hook that is not currently on the market or ready to be launched. The IPRO team will work together to approach the process of designing mock-ups of the Delta Hook Technology (DHT), testing the mock-ups, and determining measures that can be taken to improve the DHT. Subsequent mock-ups will continue to improve based on results of the product testing. Simultaneously, we will do market research in order to identify the target market, determine price points, and develop marketing strategies for DHT.
