Show moreThe IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester is to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research and for the space itself to be able to be as sustainable as possible throughout research this semester. Since the end goal is a rather ambitious one, a more realistic goal is to have an energy plan for following IPRO’s to work off of and to have the space cleared so that the developed plan can be tested. The team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable energy systems. For this fall semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Research office utilities that consume low amounts of energy, and investigate how to improve the efficiency of current utilities. Research and test various energy efficient lighting solutions. Research environmentally friendly floor, wall, and ceiling finishes along with necessary office furniture. Develop a website to display the development progress of the Zero-Energy Lab and provide information regarding “green technology” Clean and prepare the 6,000 ft2 space for future inhabitants. Using the research, develop a program proposal for the Zero-Energy Lab.

Show moreThe goal of IPRO 317 is to create an operational and business model for Urban Forestry Management. Presently, the future of Chicago’s urban forest is in question. While few refute the claim that trees are good for our community, allocating the resources to properly maintain or even expand our urban forest remains beyond our grasp. Our team seeks to make the urban forest a viable commodity in addition to its status as an asset. This would include examining the problem as a closed loop process as well as the sustainable harvest potential of the urban forest. The overall goal would be to create a business model that would increase the number of trees within the city, turn the revenue loss of tree maintenance into a revenue gain, and create a self sustaining model which will have the ability to stand on its own.

Show moreThe first and primary objective of IPRO 317 is to continue advancing the existing prototype towards full flight worthiness. This will be achieved through several overhauls of existing parts, as well as through consultation with outside experts in the radio control field. The team will also implement many new safety features as the prototype progresses toward the ultimate goal of free flight. The second objective of this semester’s IPRO 317 is to pick up where the previous semester left off on the construction of a second prototype design. Many parts have been ordered and are awaiting assembly; however several others must be developed and fabricated. The end result of this objective will produce a second viable alternative vehicle for use in marketing the idea of a VTOL aircraft to the public. The final objective of IPRO 317 is to review and analyze the results of previous semesters regarding the objectives, design goals, and feasibility of a full-scale prototype, including any existing models. Once the design goals of the aircraft are made firm a new model will be created from parts available on the current market.

Show moreA method of aqueous flooding of subterranean oil bearing formation for tertiary oil recovery involves injecting through a well into the formation a low alkaline pH aqueous sodium bicarbonate flooding solution. The flooding solution's pH ranges from about 8.25 to 9.25 and comprises from 0.25 to 5 weight percent and preferably about 0.75 to 3.0 weight percent of sodium bicarbonate and includes a petroleum recovery surfactant of 0.05 to 1.0 weight percent and between 1 and 20 weight percent of sodium chloride. After flooding, an oil and water mixture is withdrawn from the well and the oil is separated from the oil and water mixture.

Show moreA method for the non-photochemical laser induced nucleation in which short high-intensity laser pulses are used to induce nucleation in supersaturated solutions including protein solutions. The laser induces nucleation only in the area where the beam is focused or passes through, resulting in fewer nuclei than would be achieved by spontaneous nucleation. In addition, the laser reduces nucleation time significantly.

There are a number of approaches that will be taken to design and complete the website, from a technical point of view, which include beta testing and finalizing the code and functional sections. The problem that this IPRO faces this semester is to take the website that currently exists, determine its bugs, and make final adjustments for a client release.

Confirm the sustainability of the engine and the reliability of control. 3. Verify the ability of the VTOL to successfully complete vertical take off and landing. 4. Verify the ability of the VTOL to transition from vertical to horizontal flight. 5. Demonstrate free flight of the VTOL. It is very likely that in the process of completing these objectives, other problems may arise that need to be solved. We will focus our immediate attention on solving these problems, however our long term focus will be on completing the primary objectives

The same project from last semester, the New United Center, will be analyzed, explored, and redesigned in detail to meet new requirements. The primary goal in this semester long project is to implement the knowledge and new techniques learned at IIT along with the experience from individual members in order to create a unique and superior product. Most of the basic design was completed last semester; nevertheless there are many areas that must be designed or some portions that will be modified.
