The team will monitor the conditions within the greenhouse and use that information to find ways to improve its efficiency and functionality. In addition to making proposals to the Center for Green Technology, the team will implement some of these ideas. Ultimately, the team will plant and grow seedlings within the greenhouse. The vision for this IPRO group is to make the greenhouse fully functional and efficient.

Show moreThe intent of the IPRO 315 is to design a large-scale structure. The focus of this IPRO is structural analysis. The advisors of this group thought it would be even more interested if IPRO 335 and IPRO 315 would mesh together to create a large green structure. The intent of IPRO 335 is to design a “green” and innovative building using the skills and input of students studying different majors at Illinois Institute of Technology. Our team has decided to design a replacement apartment building for Gunsaulus Hall on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. Innovative technologies and practices will be researched and employed to design a “green” building. The decision to design a building for the IIT campus came about because it is an area that all of the team members could relate to and have a more realistic grasp on the project. For the remainder of the semester the two groups are planning on coordinating with each other on each step of the design process.

Build-it-yourself greenhouse plans are usually for structures with wood or metal pipe frames. Plastic pipe materials generally are inadequate to meet snow and wind load requirements. Frames can be covered with glass, rigid fiberglass, rigid double-wall plastics, or plastic film. All have advantages and disadvantages. Show moreThis paper uses data from 1,042 tweets posted by or mentioning Chicago Aldermen or Mayor Rahm Emanuel to examine how Chicago politicians use social media. Twitter provides a public communication medium in which constituents and their representatives can have two-way conversations that others can witness and record, and we used qualitative and social network methods to examine conversations between Chicagoans and representatives in city government. We coded the contents of each tweet over the two-week time period (e.g., official business, fundraising) and created representations of the social networks created by the users’ following behaviors. These networks indicate who receives politicians’ tweets and help identify the audiences for political messaging in social media. Our analysis indicates that Chicago’s Aldermen and Mayor use Twitter for social conversations more often than political ones, and that only a small number of Aldermen dominate the resulting conversation networks.

Show moreDuring the summer 2009 semester, IPRO 358 plans to develop mock-ups of the Delta Hook Technology (DHT) and to lay the foundation for a business model for Sparrowhawk, LLC, an early stage company. Sparrowhawk has investigated the concept for an innovative fishing hook that is not currently on the market or ready to be launched. The IPRO team will work together to approach the process of designing mock-ups of the Delta Hook Technology (DHT), testing the mock-ups, and determining measures that can be taken to improve the DHT. Subsequent mock-ups will continue to improve based on results of the product testing.
