Show moreIPRO346 will focus on familiarizing itself with British Petroleum’s (BP) wastewater treatment plant (WTP) for its oil refinery in Whiting, IN. Specifically, this IPRO will analyze the current permits and their stipulations regarding the amount of ammonia and total suspended solids (TSS) in the wastewater being dumped in Lake Michigan. Ultimately, possible methods and designs will be devised to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS remaining in treated wastewater. These designs will take the form of a process flow sheet with a computer simulation to model the designs. At the culmination of this IPRO we will have several different models for possible upgrades to the Whiting refinery wastewater treatment plant to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS in the wastewater entering Lake Michigan as well as a cost to implement each solution.

Show moreA magnetic tape apparatus wherein a capstan drive assembly provides a tape path thereabout and receives a transducer head with a convex face for scanning engagement with the tape. A magnetic shield may be interposed between the capstan and the head where the capstan is of magnetizable steel. The motor, flywheel and capstan form a unitary assembly which preferably includes a bearing for the outer end of the capstan. A endless loop or reel-to-reel tape cartridge configuration may be engaged with the capstan assembly without manual threading. Idler rollers for the capstan are of configuration to tension the tape at the transducer head location, and may be interchanged to tension the tape in either direction of movement. A preferred head is operable with bias of 10 megahertz or more.

Show moreThe intent of this IPRO project is to design a “green” and innovative building using the skills and input of students studying different majors at Illinois Institute of Technology. The team has decided to design a replacement apartment building for Gunsaulus Hall on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. Innovative technologies and practices will be researched and employed to design a “green” building. The decision to design a building for the IIT campus came about because it is an area that all of the team members could relate to and have a more realistic grasp on the project. Then it was suggested that the building this project group designed would then be studied structurally by the team of IPRO 315: Design of a Large-Scale Structure. For the remainder of the semester the two groups are planning on coordinating with each other on each step of the design process.

Show moreThe IPRO 338 task is to continue from past IPRO efforts in developing business strategies for electrical contractors through the use Building Informational Modeling (BIM). While past IPROs have focused on the efficiency and benefits of BIM for electrical contracting companies. Our teams focus will be on how the benefits of using these new technologies and other business development strategies can help guide electrical contractors towards improving and increasing their overall business endeavors in a recessional and competitive environment. We plan on concluding our project with a business development module presenting key successful marketing strategies. The developed deliverable is geared towards assisting members of our sponsoring Electrical Contracting Association (ECA).

Show moreStudents will continue the work of previous IPRO teams to convert a Quicksilver MXII ultralight airplane to run on E85 fuel (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline). This is technically challenging because the plane uses a 2-stroke Rotax 503 engine, where the oil must be mixed in with the fuel. After the conversion, the plane will be flight-tested. In the mean time, the plane can be flown by students to enjoy the experience of flying a personal-type aircraft. In addition to the technical aspects, the project involves developing and maintaining relationships with sponsors, public relations, and a study of the potential for ethanol in the ultralight aircraft market. This project may eventually lead to the creation of a student organization responsible for maintaining and flying the ultralight aircraft.

Show moreMultilingual content management systems, combined with streamlined processes and inexpensive organizational tools, make it possible for educators, non-profit entities and individuals with limited resources to develop sustainable and accessible multilingual Web sites. The research included a review of what’s been done in the theory and practice of designing Web sites for multilingual audiences. On the basis of that review, a series of sustainable multilingual Web sites were created, and a series of approaches and systems were tested, including MediaWiki, Plone, Drupal, Joomla, PHPMyFAQ, Blogger, Google Docs and Google Sites. There was also a case study on “Social CMS”, which refers to emergent social networks such as Facebook. The case studies are reported on, and conclude with high-level recommendations that form a roadmap for sustainable multilingual Web site development.

Show moreThe ultimate goal of the Zero Energy Lab IPRO is to design a universal format for occupying laboratories that utilize the minimal amount of energy. For the Zero Energy Lab to be usable at all hours of the day, proper lighting is a necessity. The installation of an appropriately designed lighting system, which will be both cost and energy efficient, will be a high priority in the overall scheme. A small section of the overall space will be the prototype of the design, which will in turn allow for the further development of lighting implementation.

To do that, we are using a site in Evanston as the basis for a design that minimizes energy consumption while still being an attractive marketable solution to current home buyers within the city. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living and also serve as an example to Chicago-area municipalities about the benefits of affordable sustainable planning and design.
