Show moreAsxl2 is a chromatin factor that regulates histone H3 methylation and H2A deubiquitination. Previous research in our lab has shown that Asxl2 is an important regulator of mammalian heart development and function. To facilitate the characterization of Asxl2, we proposed to generate an affinity reagent for the detection of Asxl2 proteins in vivo and in vitro. A recombinant GST-Asxl2 fusion protein in E. coli was produced that contained GST and the N-terminal 390 amino acids of Asxl2, separated by a Precision protease cleavage site. Asxl2 N1-390 was purified from GSTAsxl2 N1-390 and the purified polypeptide was biotinylated and used to select a phagedisplay antibody library. Finally, six antibodies were produced that exhibit various degrees of affinity with the recombinant Asxl2 N1-390 in ELISA assay. In the future the antibodies will be tested for their ability to detect endogenous Asxl2 proteins in western blot assay. This would facilitate the study of the role of Asxl2 in heart development and function.

Show moreThe objective of Ipro 333 is to create a documentary capturing the experience of IIT students trying to find a job after graduation. This is going to be done through a 3 semester process in which the group must plan, film, and edit footage taken. This being semester 2, the group goal is to finish the plans and all o f the filming, leaving only the very time consuming editing to the third semester.

Show moreOur purpose is to seek a union between living comfortably and living sustainably. We are to design for a future Chicago-area community, which first minimizes its energy consumption and then uses the most sustainable methods to fulfill the remaining needs of the inhabitants. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living. This community will also serve as an example to Chicago-area municipalities about the benefits of sustainable planning, design, and living.

Show moreThe City of Chicago has been nominated as the U.S. Bid City for the 2016 Olympic Games. If Chicago was to win the honorable tile of the Host City, one of the main challenges that the organizers will face is to provide a temporary housing for all athletes, organizers, media and spectators involved. While the athletes, coaches and other major players will be situated in Olympic village, thousands if not millions of others, will face the challenge of seeking the affordable housing for the length of stay. Our IPRO proposes economical and environmentally friendly solution to this problem. We propose to utilize thousands of old shipping containers that are abundant in Chicago area and to convert them into housing objects. These second hand products will be modified and equipped with electrical, plumbing and HVAC installations, making them aesthetically and functionally comparable to similar conventional housing objects. Following the completion of the Olympic Games, these housing containers could be easily converted into affordable permanent housing for the residents of the Chicago South side. This will allow local residentsto benefit from higher quality affordable housing without being forced to relocate from their neighborhoods. Considering that housing accommodations in Chicago during Olympics will be highly priced most of the construction costs can be covered in this manner. Our IPRO hopes to make esthetically appealing and practical permanent housing out of materials that can be recycled twice: first from the shipping containers and second from the Olympic Housing. We also plan to explore particular needs of temporary residents during Olympics and later permanent residents as well as to explore what would be the most effective transformation methods from one purpose to the other. These housing objects must appeal to many people from different cultural backgrounds, and provide them with good living conditions for a short period of time. Also, we must investigate what makes affordable housing possible and what are the mistakes that the City of Chicago made in the past with similar projects. These housing structures must be fully functional for the future permanent residents, but they also must be designed in accordance with rules and regulations by the City of Chicago Department of Buildings so that they are safe and aesthetically appealing for all of the other local residents. In conclusion, the container housing is an affordable and environmentally friendly solution to housing needs of numerous individuals involved in the Olympic events while it also provides a long term housing opportunity for the residents of the local community.

Show moreGPS modules and tracking devices have influenced many advances in modern technology. The data GPS provides has replaced the map and compass, and can be crucial in many situations. Its current platform for use however requires the user to utilize a handheld device and direct his/her frame of view to a screen. In many situations there is a need to have eyes on and full awareness of surroundings, something that simply can't be done while holding and viewing a handheld device. To solve this dilemma, team Smart Specs has integrated ideas of GPS, heads-up displays, and datalink technology to form a design that will give the user full hands free capabilities. This device, worn like glasses, allows the user to track objects and even designate objects to be tracked, which are all shown through heads-up display.

Show moreCurrently, some motorcycles have the ability to collect information about the performance of the vehicle. However, this information may not be easily accessible to the rider or mechanic of the bike and may also not be presented in an easily understood format. The equipment used to gather this data is generally not inexpensive as well. IPRO 308 intends to develop an affordable device called motoPro which firstly, will gather and record important information during a motorcycle trip and secondly, display that data in a user-friendly, understandable format. This data can be described as a rider profile. The rider profile will not only be useful for improving the safety and performance of the rider, but will also benefit the mechanic and also possibly the manufacturer of the motorcycle. Team motoPro completed initial technological and consumer research during this 2011 summer semester. The team investigated current technology to see what solutions it may provide, began obtaining some hardware components for prototype research and also began interviewing members of the motorcycle community in order to gain valuable insights to use for the device. Some members of the team also completed the Basic Riding Course offered through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in order to become more familiar with riding a motorcycle. The project will continue into the 2011 fall semester and the team will continue consumer and technology research, create a compelling story with which to attract a sponsor and continue prototyping.

Show moreA two-dimensional nonlinear distributed-parameter optimal state estimation algorithm has been developed and applied to an exothermic packed bed catalytic reactor. Temperature and concentration profiles were estimated from limited temperature and/or concentration measurements. Orthogonal collocation was used to solve the differential sensitivity and filtering equations. Both simulations and on-line experiments with a pilot scale packed bed reactor for the partial oxidation of methanol have been used to study the effects of measurement choice, model parameter errors, and unmeasured process disturbances. Excellent tracking of the reactor profiles was achieved with only one or two properly placed temperature sensors.

Show moreThe project aims to convert the urban wood waste into an environmentally friendly, marketable product. The primary focus this semester will be to create visibility for urban wood through the connection of products made from urban wood to the end users. The primary drawback for urban wood is the perception of “no value” attached to the wood, which results in an epidemic of wasted wood, since nobody wants to use it. This project will research and organize possible production methods and uses for urban wood, which could create a business opportunity and jump-start the urban wood demand/market in Chicago.

Show moreCompetitive cyclists around the world are using technology to monitor training data in order to improve their training methods. Power measurements are important to such training, however existing power meters are expensive and the cyclist must replace existing crank sets. Thus, IPRO 324 intends to develop a power meter that not only can be applied to any crank set but that will accurately collect and transmit data to current cycling computers as well as cost significantly less than comparable systems.

Show moreThe Academic Library Building in the Digital Age: A Study of Construction, Planning, and Design of New Library Space is the first comprehensive study of planning and construction of academic library buildings completed entirely in the new century. Given digitization of collections, the dynamic mix of new learning spaces with traditional library functions, and other factors informing contemporary library design, the digital age has not raised so much the question of if libraries will survive, but how they will survive. This book answers this question, among others, by looking to academic library building projects completed in recent years.
