Show moreCurrently, some motorcycles have the ability to collect information about the performance of the vehicle. However, this information may not be easily accessible to the rider or mechanic of the bike and may also not be presented in an easily understood format. The equipment used to gather this data is generally not inexpensive as well. IPRO 308 intends to develop an affordable device called motoPro which firstly, will gather and record important information during a motorcycle trip and secondly, display that data in a user-friendly, understandable format. This data can be described as a rider profile. The rider profile will not only be useful for improving the safety and performance of the rider, but will also benefit the mechanic and also possibly the manufacturer of the motorcycle. Team motoPro completed initial technological and consumer research during this 2011 summer semester. The team investigated current technology to see what solutions it may provide, began obtaining some hardware components for prototype research and also began interviewing members of the motorcycle community in order to gain valuable insights to use for the device. Some members of the team also completed the Basic Riding Course offered through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in order to become more familiar with riding a motorcycle. The project will continue into the 2011 fall semester and the team will continue consumer and technology research, create a compelling story with which to attract a sponsor and continue prototyping.

Show moreThe scope of I-Pro 335 is both a conclusion to unfinished work from the previous two semesters along with new projects that will start and end this semester. Work to be concluded and closed-out from last semester: Final LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) documentation and identification of individuals that might be part of a LEED team should the school desire to pursue that route. Final design of Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.) elements including a re-design of the elevator, and approval by the client. Using the Code of Ethics written last semester as a base line, the code will be rewritten to strengthen its objective to provide guidance for the I-Pro. New projects to begin and completed this semester are: The roof re-design- Green roof options. This may also include storm water retention and grey water recycling systems, as well as any updates to the buildings primary plumbing systems. Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) - Lab hoods, air conditioning load calculations and Hydronic Heating. Electrical systems design- Illumination calculations and design, Alarm systems, and ‘Off-heating’ load calculations from equipment to be housed in Alumni Memorial Hall (A.M.H.). Construction schedule. Cost estimate.

Show moreThis invention relates to a power module for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle including an integrated converter having a rectifier changing AC to DC, a DC/DC converter changing from a first voltage to a second voltage, and a battery storing electrical energy. The integrated converter operates in three modes 1) AC plug-in charging mode, 2) boost mode supplying power from the battery to the electrical bus and 3) buck mode supplying power from the electrical bus to the battery. The integrated converter utilizes the same single inductor during each of the three operating modes to reduce cost and weight of the system.

Show moreModel-based controllers for a bench scale autothermal tubular packed-bed reactor have been formulated using the Internal Model Control (IMC) approach. The Structural Dominance Analysis technique has been used in developing the reduced-order models. Controller performance at robust and sensitive steady states have been assessed through simulations and experiments. Both PI and model-based controllers can regulate reactor operation at robust steady states, but only third order IMC controllers are able to regulate reactor operation at the sensitive steady state.

Show moreRecent results on searches for new physics from Run 1 of the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The ATLAS experiment has already collected more than 20 fb−1 of integrated luminosity, allowing for a large number of new phenomena searches in many different final states. No deviations from the Standard Model expectations are found, and corresponding constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model are obtained.

Show moreThe goal of IPRO 348 is to first find a use for the condensate produced by air conditioners, and then to create a product that will recycle the condensate for said use. The first task for IPRO 348 is to collect information on how condensate is formed, its purity, and the amount that is produced by a central air conditioning system. The end goal of the IPRO is to have a marketable system that will collect and store the condensate produced by the air conditioning units and will then proceed to use the condensate in the form of cleaning water, irrigation water, and possibly various plumbing purposes such as flushing toilets. After creating a viable product, the IPRO team is determined to make the product scalable, expanding its market from residential to commercial industries. To fulfill this goal, the IPRO team has been broken down into subgroups which are each responsible for a different objective. The first subgroup is responsible for the creation of a device that will allow for the condensate to be collected and stored. The second subgroup is responsible for analyzing the collected sample’s composition and checking for bacterial growth. The third subgroup is responsible for setting the parameters and methods for condensate collection. The fourth subgroup is responsible for obtaining the condensate samples from various sites, as well as collecting environmental data. The fifth subgroup is responsible for beginning the marketing aspects of the project. As a whole, the IPRO team will determine how the project should progress.

Show moreIn the real world, receiving the right information at the right time exacts success or failure. In the growing sport of paintball, every little edge counts towards victory. Real Time Initiative offers Smart Specs to our consumers to obtain an edge over the competition. Smart Specs relay real-time networked information amongst the users to distinguish friends from foes. The communication occurs through head mounted displays worn within the paintball masks. It reduces friendly fire which in turn reduces tension within the team.

Our IPRO is currently dealing with solutions for Juarez, Mexico and Chicago, Illinois. These two places are very different in climate, culture, as well as economy. Our IPRO team this semester will focus on applying the prototype from last two semesters to Juarez, Mexico, while making adjustments as needed. We will continue the research into systems which will be advantageous to each situation and develop them accordingly. Once we get a better understanding as to how we can apply our prototype to Juarez situation we

Show moreThe main problem which our project faces is what to plan to build in the Michael Reese site, which was recently demolished to make room for the Olympic village. Since Chicago did not win the bid for the 2016 Olympics, the site remains vacant and unused. The basis of the IPRO is to develop a plan for this site, and, specifically, to design a building to serve as an anchor for the area. This anchor building should serve the community while still remaining economical.
