Show moreThe objective of Ipro 333 is to create a documentary capturing the experience of IIT students trying to find a job after graduation. This is going to be done through a 3 semester process in which the group must plan, film, and edit footage taken. This being semester 2, the group goal is to finish the plans and all o f the filming, leaving only the very time consuming editing to the third semester.

Show moreOur team desires to create a plan that enables living in a sustainable manner at an affordable price. To do that, we are using a site in Evanston as the basis for a design that minimizes energy consumption while still being an attractive marketable solution to current home buyers within the city. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living and also serve as an example to Chicago-area municipalities about the benefits of affordable sustainable planning and design.

Show moreThe goal of the IPRO 320 (The Greenhouse Project) team is to evaluate, improve, and utilize The Chicago Center for Green Technology’s solar greenhouse. The team will monitor the conditions within the greenhouse and use that information to find ways to improve its efficiency and functionality. In addition to making proposals to the Center for Green Technology, the team will implement some of these ideas. Ultimately, the team will plant and grow seedlings within the greenhouse. The vision for this IPRO group is to make the greenhouse fully functional and efficient.

Show moreThis paper examines a supersonic multi-jet interaction problem that we believe is likely to be important for mixing enhancement and noise reduction in supersonic mixer-ejector nozzles. We demonstrate that it is possible to synchronize the screech instability of four rectangular jets by precisely adjusting the inter-jet spacing. Our experimental data agree with a theory that assumes that the phase-locking of adjacent jets occurs through a coupling at the jet lip. Although synchronization does not change the frequency of the screech tone, its amplitude is augmented. The synchronized multi-jets exhibit higher spreading than the unsynchronized jets, with the single jet spreading the least. We compare the near-field noise of the four jets with synchronized screech to the noise of the sum of four jets operated individually. Our noise measurements reveal that the more rapid mixing of the synchronized multi-jets causes the peak jet noise source to move upstream and to radiate noise at larger angles to the flow direction. Based on our results, we have grounds to believe that screech synchronization is advantageous for noise reduction internal to a mixer-ejector nozzle, since the noise can now be suppressed by a shorter acoustically lined ejector.

Show moreEfficiency in parking facilities has been set to low standards since self-parking was introduced in the 1950s1. As technology has developed, parking has been left in the past. Drivers are increasingly realizing the problem as they become accustomed to other technology, which increases the efficiency of their lives (eg smartphones). While driving around searching for an open lot, circling a garage for an parking spot, or wandering through garage a looking for a parked car, people have time to ponder the many improvements that should be made to the parking experience. Simply Park: IPRO 365 is taking initiative to seize the possibilities new technologies offer the parking industry. The result should be improved driver experience as well as increased efficiency and profitability of parking facilities. The system will include signs visible to passersby that display the number of vacancies within a parking facility. Once in the parking facility, additional signs will direct drivers to sections of the facility with vacancies. Colored lights above each parking spot will indicate the state of occupancy for quick reference when looking down an aisle. When a driver parks, the ticket they receive at the entrance gate will associate their ticket to the spot they parked in, so when the driver returns to the facility he/she can present his/her ticket to a kiosk which will notify him/her how to get back to his/her car. As the vehicle leaves the ticket association will be reset and displays will update to show one more spot available. Additional interfaces through mobile and internet applications will further expedite the parking process. 1National

Show moreResearchWeb is meant to broaden IIT undergraduate participation beyond the existing mechanisms such as fellowships, research and reading courses, and departmental projects. There is also the possibility of broadening this program to other scholarly individuals outside of the IIT undergraduate community. These individuals include IIT graduate students, students from other universities, and promising high school students. ResearchWeb is also meant to improve the transition, and perhaps promote if need be, the transition from undergraduate education to graduate education. This would be fulfilled through practical research experience.

There are a number of approaches that will be taken to design and complete the website, from a technical point of view, which include beta testing and finalizing the code and functional sections. The problem that this IPRO faces this semester is to take the website that currently exists, determine its bugs, and make final adjustments for a client release.

Show moreThe direction IPro 307 “Intermodal Container Transport” is taking for the 2008 semester is geared toward alternative energy technologies as well as expansion of the capacity and efficiency of a designated rail transfer yard. The selected exploration site is the Norfolk Southern rail transfer yard at 47th street near the Dan Ryan Expressway. Since there is a large amount of on-site equipment (Mi-Jack side loaders, cranes, and yard hostlers), the possibility of introducing alternative fuel technologies exists and can provide a cleaner and more cost-effective solution to air pollution and rising fuel costs. The group will be focusing efforts on using wind power in parallel with compressed natural gas as an alternative fuel, as well as designing innovative ways to improve yard capacity and efficiency. The ultimate goal of this IPro is to develop a plan to increase yard efficiency and output, while at the same time incorporating green technology as an alternative energy source for the facility equipment.

Show moreIPRO 331, its team members, and all involved faculty are devoted to enhancing awareness in the community to the issues surrounding global warming. Our goal is to give PowerPoint presentations to several different audiences, especially today’s younger generations in elementary school, high school, and college, in order to both educate and interest people in these issues. Our presentations are meant to be objective – we want to present the facts about global warming research from credible sources. Additionally, with the help of our website and contacts, we hope to be another driving force in the sustainability movement and climate change research. Our purpose can be summed up in a quote included at the end of each of our presentations: “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.” – Charles Darwin

Show moreA robotic cane may include a grip handle, a cane body extending from the grip handle at a first end, a motorized omni-directional wheel coupled to a second end of the cane body, a balance control sensor, and a controller module. The balance control sensor provides a balance signal corresponding to an orientation of the robotic cane. The controller module may receive the balance signal from the balance control sensor and calculate a balancing velocity of the motorized omni-directional wheel based at least in part on the balance signal and an inverted pendulum control algorithm. The controller module may further provide a drive signal to the motorized omni-directional wheel in accordance with the calculated balancing velocity. The calculated balancing velocity is a speed and direction of the motorized omni-directional wheel to retain the robotic cane in an substantially upright position.
