Show moreThis is a continuing IPRO with the overall aim of improving and enhancing the image of Illinois Institute of Technology, both as an institution and a physical campus, in regards to sustainability and “green” practices. To that end, the current semester is focused on several design projects based on concepts generated in the previous semesters along with input from the current semester to enhance a new “green” campus. We will also be providing information on how IIT is currently acting in a sustainable fashion and how students on campus can contribute to our image as a sustainable campus

Show moreThe team working on this project has set itself three major objectives. Firstly it strives to create a comprehensive and in-depth database containing valuable information concerning sustainability. This database should be user-friendly and intuitively presented so people who are interested in sustainability are quickly educated with the key points and have easy access to relevant and high quality references and further readings. The second objective of this project essentially consists of creating a roadmap and master plan on how to make Illinois Institute of Technology’s (IIT) Main Campus sustainable. This will be done by auditing and then benchmarking IIT to other similar projects. This roadmap and master plan will be developed with the vision that once implemented IIT will be a leader in sustainability and encourage many others to follow our track. Lastly the third objective is to create a house of the future. The house of the future has many objectives for itself. It should incorporate current design possibilities and make use of various available technologies to be sustainable and energy efficient among other things. This house should attract the public and educate them how easily sustainability can be achieved using current technology and knowledge at a competitive price.

Show moreThe ultimate goal of the Zero Energy Lab is to get the fourth level of machinery hall off the electrical grid. The IPRO is moving towards transforming the space into a research space for future energy and lighting technologies. Since the end goals of the Zero Energy Lab are ambitious for one semester we are proposing to address solar hot water, a golf cart used as a mobile battery bank, and window efficiency this semester. We are also hoping to learn some tuck-pointing techniques to make the space more presentable. We would like for the team to learn new things about the technologies we are researching and using. We hope to have a good hands-on experience with energy efficiency and green technologies. The team is a collaboration of students from various majors including architecture, political science, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and biophysics. Together we believe we will be able to create a cohesive end product and work well together along the way.

Show moreThe purpose of this IPRO is to develop a robust, working prototype that can automatically monitor and detect a problem with a milling machine at A. FInkl & Sons Co. This IPRO is in its fourth semester and there are two challenges remaining: (1) alerting management to the detection of broken teeth during machining; and (2) developing spatial representations of items undergoing heat treatment. However, A. Finkl & Sons has asked us to concentrate solely on the goal of finding a way to detect when a break occurs in one of the milling teeth and then alert the mechanic monitoring the machine in order to replace it. This system will involve measuring vibrations using an accelerometer or by the use of laser detection. The goal of this IPRO is to research, test, and inform A. FInkl & Sons of the best solution to invest in, therefore they can decide what is better for their company.

Show moreIIT’s core vision is built around the principle that no matter how good we get, we can always improve. As the University seeks to assert itself as a member of the top tier of academic institutions in the U.S., there are many ideas for improvement up for implementation. Among these ideas is the goal to make IIT the most sustainable, urban university campus in the United States. IPRO 326 (“A Greener IIT”) is based upon the idea that in order to accomplish this, we must improve the sustainability of IIT’s main campus landscape.

Show moreCurrently, some motorcycles have the ability to collect information about the performance of the vehicle. However, this information may not be easily accessible to the rider or mechanic of the bike and may also not be presented in an easily understood format. The equipment used to gather this data is generally not inexpensive as well. IPRO 308 intends to develop an affordable device called motoPro which firstly, will gather and record important information during a motorcycle trip and secondly, display that data in a user-friendly, understandable format. This data can be described as a rider profile. The rider profile will not only be useful for improving the safety and performance of the rider, but will also benefit the mechanic and also possibly the manufacturer of the motorcycle. Team motoPro completed initial technological and consumer research during this 2011 summer semester. The team investigated current technology to see what solutions it may provide, began obtaining some hardware components for prototype research and also began interviewing members of the motorcycle community in order to gain valuable insights to use for the device. Some members of the team also completed the Basic Riding Course offered through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in order to become more familiar with riding a motorcycle. The project will continue into the 2011 fall semester and the team will continue consumer and technology research, create a compelling story with which to attract a sponsor and continue prototyping.

Use the teaching kit as a means of spreading our module beyond our immediate scope, to high school teachers, college campus organizations and volunteer based groups. (2) Develop a website to enrich the experience of the module, provide a professional contact interface and deliver our educational message to a broader audience. (3) Promote How Many Earths and education on resource consumption by developing marketing plan, publishing stories in local media outlets and capitalizing on publicity opportunities. (4) Continue to reach out to high school students by visiting more Chicago-land high schools, continuing to present the Ecological Footprint module and beginning to present the Cradle-to- Cradle module. (5) Refine the Cradle-to-Cradle presentation by analyzing feedback and response of pupils. (6) Continue to collect and analyze feedback from students and teachers concerning both of the modules, our presentation style and the teaching kit. Use this information to continually enhance the learning experience.
