Show moreThe intent of the IPRO 315 is to design a large-scale structure. The focus of this IPRO is structural analysis. The advisors of this group thought it would be even more interested if IPRO 335 and IPRO 315 would mesh together to create a large green structure. The intent of IPRO 335 is to design a “green” and innovative building using the skills and input of students studying different majors at Illinois Institute of Technology. Our team has decided to design a replacement apartment building for Gunsaulus Hall on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. Innovative technologies and practices will be researched and employed to design a “green” building. The decision to design a building for the IIT campus came about because it is an area that all of the team members could relate to and have a more realistic grasp on the project. For the remainder of the semester the two groups are planning on coordinating with each other on each step of the design process.

Show moreWith increased diversity in the U.S. workforce, there has become a greater need for organizations to defend against accusations of discrimination and thus a need to produce more accurate adverse impact statistics in discrimination cases. The purpose of the present study is to investigate two adjustments to a confidence interval procedure for calculating adverse impact to see if they give more adequate performance over the unadjusted Morris and Lobsenz (2000) confidence interval procedure. A Monte Carlo simulation revealed that using an adjustment for small sample sizes alleviates some of the problems found for the confidence interval procedure found in previous research. Specifically, adding a 0.5 adjustment to the confidence interval procedure increases the accuracy over the unadjusted procedure and the Agresti and Caffo (2000) procedure. Implications for practioners and researchers are included in the discussion.

Show moreHamid Arastoopour in Chemical Engineering has developed and patented technology for processing scrap rubber from tires in an extruder. This technology breaks the chemical bonds that result in the rubber being vulcanized. This allows the rubber to be reformed into new shapes and re-vulcanized resulting a true recycling of the material into new rubber parts. Most other rubber recycling technology only grinds up the rubber. These technologies allow the rubber to be used as a filler but does not allow true recycling of the rubber. There is a tremendous supply of used tires are a significant environmental problem as well as waste of a potential resource. This technology could provide the means to effectively use this waste. This project is continuing from the Spring 03 Semester. The Spring class has identified 10+ applications where the crumb rubber technology developed at IIT can be used, and two or three applications that are evolving as new crumb rubber applications. As part of their Business Plan, they've sought input from potential users of crumb rubber and competition regarding the crumb rubber characteristics required within each of these applications and the size of these respective applications in pounds of crumb rubber and dollar value for the last three years and the future three years. The end product of this effort will be the identification of the prime crumb rubber applications. The Fall IPRO team will be responsible for more detailed analysis of the prime crumb rubber application opportunities, with emphasis on determining the size/past and future growth of crumb rubber use within these key applications and the market share of competition within two categories of market entry. Once the prime applications are quantified and qualified in terms of their potential, the class would have to determine the optimum penetration strategy for this crumb rubber technology:1) One approach could be the sale of crumb rubber manufacturing equipment, utilizing this crub rubber technology2) A second entry option is to produce crumb rubber, selling to the users within each of these prime applications. A sub-alternative within this entry option is to continually move the manufacturing facility producing crumb rubber to those states supporting this manufacturing, where they seek to eliminate the excess number of spare tires being dumped into those states. To gain a meaningful penetration of these crumb rubber applications, based on the strenghs and weaknesses of the IIT technology, a detailed marketing plan will have to be developed, which will result in the optimum penetration within these applications. Once the optimum option for this crumb rubber technology is determined, based on each application's penetration scenario, a detailed analysis regarding the profit and loss of a manufacturing facility serving one or both options is required. A Business Plan supporting these analyses will then be prepared, followed by the solicitation of the necessary funding from venture and/ or angel sources.

Show moreGPS modules and tracking devices have influenced many advances in modern technology. The data GPS provides has replaced the map and compass, and can be crucial in many situations. Its current platform for use however requires the user to utilize a handheld device and direct his/her frame of view to a screen. In many situations there is a need to have eyes on and full awareness of surroundings, something that simply can't be done while holding and viewing a handheld device. To solve this dilemma, team Smart Specs has integrated ideas of GPS, heads-up displays, and datalink technology to form a design that will give the user full hands free capabilities. This device, worn like glasses, allows the user to track objects and even designate objects to be tracked, which are all shown through heads-up display.

Show moreThe sense of smell allows an organism to be aware of the chemical information of the external world. In most land animals, the olfactory system enables the perception of both volatile chemicals, as well as pheromones--chemicals released by animals that regulate their social activities. Among several factors that mediate olfaction, connexin 36 (Cx36), a subunit of gap junctions, has been suggested to play a crucial role in the olfactory system. In the research presented herein, I performed habituation/dishabituation studies on both Cx36 knockout (Cx36 KO) and wild-type mice to determine their exploration patterns towards four odorants. The results indicate that Cx36 KO and wild-type mice behaved differently when they were given defined odorants. In general, Cx36 KO mice spent more time exploring odorants. Cx36 KO and wild-type mice also exhibited different detection threshold towards given odorants. Moreover, cross-habituation between benzaldehyde and octaldehyde was established in Cx36 KO mice at the concentration of 10-4%, which was different from that in wild-type mice. These results may suggest important functions of Cx36 gap junctions in odor detection and integration in mammals. Keywords: Connexin 36, gap junction, olfactory system, habituation/dishabituation

Show moreThe members of IPRO 318 are collaborating with the Brookfield Zoo to develop an iPhone application that will enhance the visitors’ experience and interactions with the zoo environment. This application will be an educational device in addition to trip planning tool. As such, it will be broken down into two major components. First, an educational module that includes the guided inquiry system for animal identification with other informative and interesting functions (such as games, social networks, etc.). Second, the commodity module, which includes an interactive map with GPS, basic park information (such as hours, tickets, parking, etc.), and functions related to other services provided by the zoo. Additionally, it involves designing a sleek, logical, user-friendly layout. By organizing the animal database and additional information provided by the zoo, and coupling this with the tools available on the iPhone, IPRO 318 seeks to design an efficient and entertaining means of utilizing modern technology to explore the zoo and its animals. This document provides a detailed overview of the project, including the plan of action, work breakdown, project goals, background information, and the organization of the IPRO team.

Show moreThe purpose of this IPRO is to develop a robust, working prototype that can automatically monitor and detect a problem with a milling machine at A. FInkl & Sons Co. This IPRO is in its fourth semester and there are two challenges remaining: (1) alerting management to the detection of broken teeth during machining; and (2) developing spatial representations of items undergoing heat treatment. However, A. Finkl & Sons has asked us to concentrate solely on the goal of finding a way to detect when a break occurs in one of the milling teeth and then alert the mechanic monitoring the machine in order to replace it. This system will involve measuring vibrations using an accelerometer or by the use of laser detection. The goal of this IPRO is to research, test, and inform A. FInkl & Sons of the best solution to invest in, therefore they can decide what is better for their company.

Proposed extensions include the ability to search for “entities” (e.g., people) and their relationships to other entities in a fact database and implementing user interface support for the extensions. Another goal of the Swyne Project is to work on our collective soft skills. These include, but are not limited to, interpersonal communications, presentations, management functions, and time management. These skills are all critical to not only a successful project, but also a successful career outside of college. Our search engine will hopefully be an inspiration to others who are interested in working on a semantic search engine in the future and expanding upon our results.
