Show morePervasive computing is the concept that we will one day have an invisible fabric of networked computing that assists and enhances our daily lives. During the Spring 2003 semester this project examined one practical use of such technology, a prototype course evaluation system. This project continuation will look at new uses of the technology. Special focus will be given to the area of context- and location-aware computing and cross-network services from the Internet to telephone networks. It is also possible that short-range wireless networks may be used in conjunction with hand-held computers to enhance the pervasive experience. Students from all majors are welcome to join this project team, with a definite need for students from electrical and computer engineering, computer science, internet communication and technical communication. Students will gain experience in developing a system to interface with a legacy network. While developing this system, some of the key considerations that they must be aware of are the interface issues with the device, privacy concerns in allowing other people to see when, where, and how one is using a device, and security concerns to make sure the data exchanged cannot be tampered with. For computer science students, it is advantageous to have a background in network programming and operating systems; while electrical engineering students should have a basic knowledge of communication systems.

Show moreThe objective of IPRO 362 is to understand the environment in which disaster victims are found and the human needs involved. Additionally, understanding the medical standards of sanitation, sterility and environmental control conditions that are expected in an operating room are all central to developing a humancentered design. In order to be able to ensure the success of the M.O.R.E. Life project, design needs to focus on the following: MEDICAL PERSONNEL •Provide the necessary tools and equipment which medical personnel need in order to perform medical interventions •Identify and provide a surgical environment satisfying necessary sanitary, given the environmental limitations in a disaster relief situation. STRUCTURE/PORTABILITY •Work to make the mobile operating room (M.O.R.E) design as compact as possible, while still keeping sanitary standards as high as possible. FILTRATION •Design an effective filtration system that will allow for environmental control within the structure. •Address sanitation by taking into account airborne pathogens can be filtered out of the air. POWER •Design an energy-efficient power system for the mobile operating theatre, considering alternative energy sources. DESIGN •Create and refine a design for the operating theatre, including a carrying case. •Replicate standard operating room conditions in the mobile version. •Conduct a market analysis to identify key stakeholders, advantages and disadvantages of existing products and current costs.

Show moreConventional refrigeration uses a great deal of electricity, a resource scare in developing areas, and as a consequence it is not viable. However if a system that is inexpensive, reliable under local conditions, and operates with only minimal electric power from a solar cell or battery can be introduced it would be a tremendous asset. Faced with such a requirements this project addresses these issues in order to find a solution that is economically and socially feasible.

Show moreIPRO 312 for Spring 2007 was initially intended to research rapid response manufacturing of casters for Colson Associates; however, as objectives of the company shifted course, IPRO 312 was left without a target of research. A new idea of pharmaceuticals arose as a topic of study. The teammates were determined to hunt for information pertaining to problems in the pharmaceutical field, but this determination was cut short by the realization that it is a very secure, secretive, and private business. The teammates of this IPRO were not discouraged by this obstacle and kept pressing for information. The advisor, Prof. Maurer, brought in speakers from the field and helped the class change its direction into what it is today: Comparative Industrial Operations Analysis.

Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities and grounds. Three major spaces currently hold latent potential at the school: the abandoned convent/dormitory, library and inner courtyards, used correctly they can become a catalyst for positive change. It is proposed that the dormitory be torn down, in its place a “community center” would be constructed. The space will service extracurricular activities at the school, public outreach programs (i.e. youth groups, cub/girl scouts, etc.), club rooms and a new space for library books storage and usage. The second space being addressed is the library, given its current isolated position the space would be transformed into a communication and media center equipped with the technology necessary for worldwide communication. The third space addressed is the inner courtyards of the building. With six dispersed throughout the school grounds, they can become an active part of the recreational aspect of the school’s environment: places of social interaction, outdoor classrooms, etc. Additionally, the greening techniques proposed for the school’s facilities will include methods for efficiency improvement, education and school promotion.

The same project from last semester, the New United Center, will be analyzed, explored, and redesigned in detail to meet new requirements. The primary goal in this semester long project is to implement the knowledge and new techniques learned at IIT along with the experience from individual members in order to create a unique and superior product. Most of the basic design was completed last semester; nevertheless there are many areas that must be designed or some portions that will be modified.

Our design, for the community of Evanston, will first minimizes its energy consumption and then uses the most sustainable methods to fulfill the remaining needs of the inhabitants. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living. This community will also serve as an example to Chicago-area municipalities about the benefits of affordable sustainable planning, design, and living. It will also be an attractive marketable solution to the current home buyers within our given demographic.

Show moreIt is our objective to create a medium in which to combine the need of proficient web developers for university projects/ jobs as well as others looking for similar services outside of the university, with IIT students looking to gain experience as well as payment, whether through class credits or through wages. We plan to create a business model of a consulting firm that seeks out clients, as well as having clients brought to the firm, realize their needs, create a design document of their proposed website, then seek out the students with the capabilities matching the clients needs and “hire” them for the job, all the while maintaining that the quality of the student’s work will be sufficient to the client and therefore sufficient for our consulting firm. The start up companies/clients we gain will receive knowledge, expertise, and fresh ideas for a much needed website for their company/project. On the other hand the students will receive real-life experience working for a client in a certain timetable, with a standardized set of guidelines while also receiving some form of compensation.
