Show moreFabrication Laboratories, or Fab Labs, were started as a community outreach program by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology providing digital fabrication tools for rapid prototyping to the general public. The Museum of Science and Industry has partnered with IPRO to further develop the Fab Lab at their site. IPRO 333 has been rendered the task of working with the administration in the Fab lab of MSI to design methodologies for furthering the use of the laboratory and assisting in determining its end goals for both the museum and the community by working with the lab directors to broaden the possible uses of the lab, promoting membership at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, and involving the community in science and technology programs at the museum. In order to accomplish our tasks we have broken into three main teams, each of which will focus on a different aspect of the lab. The first team will be responsible for creating events specific to the museum members, creating proposals for low‐cost, high‐profit activities for the lab, and possibly creating a website where users of the lab may sign up for time in the lab, reserve or order materials, and rent storage space for long term projects they wish to work on. The second team is responsible for integrating the Fab Lab into the current working exhibits as well as future exhibitions. The third team will be responsible for designing and creating new programs for users of the Fab Lab, such as the students enrolled in the Science Achievers program or museum members.

Show moreThe specific plan for our IPRO is construct a synthetic biological circuit, that is both novel, aesthetically pleasing and independent of the host organism. This is a first step toward implementing entirely synthetic organisms that can be designed to a specification. The target we have chosen is a synchronized biological oscillator, implemented in a vertebrate organism, the zebrafish. To produce an organism requires a wide variety of skills and tasks. Accordingly we have organized into subteams, each responsible for progress in some area, with an administrative sub team overseeing all the events.

Show moreWe have quite a few objectives for this IPRO. Our first objective is to research into both industrial and mass market applications of the Product Animations technology. After this first objective, we take 2 paths. The first leads to determining a screening criterion to select the best industrial prospects. We then plan to quantify the value propositions for the prospects selected from objective 2. When this is finished, we will create a deliverable simulation example, and finally write down any and all recommendations for future work with this IPRO. The other path leads to researching the idea or design of an ASP website. After this has been implemented, we want to use a PAI example of a milkshake machine, and show this on the ASP at IPRO day.

Show moreThe objective of this IPRO is to investigate techniques for rapidly and effectively manufacturing casters to satisfy “rush orders” for special casters. Conventional manufacturing is based on part-specific tooling suitable for high-volume, planned production. Attempting to insert special “rush orders” into such an operation is very inefficient and expenses.

Show moreThe IPRO 349-3.2 project has as the primary objective to map four processes following the ITIL standards. While this is being done, the team will develop a series of recommendations to Comarch on how to analyze a client’s processes and design a solution for that client that complies with the ITIL guidelines. The project’s secondary objective is to do a research and case study about how other IT companies offer OSS suites that comply with the ESB methods and ensure that their customers comply with the SOX regulations.

Show moreThe first and primary objective of IPRO 317 is to continue advancing the existing prototype towards full flight worthiness. This will be achieved through several overhauls of existing parts, as well as through consultation with outside experts in the radio control field. The team will also implement many new safety features as the prototype progresses toward the ultimate goal of free flight. The second objective of this semester’s IPRO 317 is to pick up where the previous semester left off on the construction of a second prototype design. Many parts have been ordered and are awaiting assembly; however several others must be developed and fabricated. The end result of this objective will produce a second viable alternative vehicle for use in marketing the idea of a VTOL aircraft to the public. The final objective of IPRO 317 is to review and analyze the results of previous semesters regarding the objectives, design goals, and feasibility of a full-scale prototype, including any existing models. Once the design goals of the aircraft are made firm a new model will be created from parts available on the current market.

Show moreThe objective of this IPRO is to choose an appropriate method (or combination of multiple methods) for desulfurizing coal before combustion takes place in a furnace for energy production. Three methods will be researched in order to find the best way of desulfurization- physical, chemical, and biological. Whichever method(s) is found to be the most effective at removing sulfur from coal will be chosen. After this decision the group will move forward and design the process equipment; later an economic assessment will be done to cost the equipment. All of the group’s goals will be completed within this semester.

Show moreThe intent of the IPRO 315 is to design a large-scale structure. The focus of this IPRO is structural analysis. The advisors of this group thought it would be even more interested if IPRO 335 and IPRO 315 would mesh together to create a large green structure. The intent of IPRO 335 is to design a “green” and innovative building using the skills and input of students studying different majors at Illinois Institute of Technology. Our team has decided to design a replacement apartment building for Gunsaulus Hall on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. Innovative technologies and practices will be researched and employed to design a “green” building. The decision to design a building for the IIT campus came about because it is an area that all of the team members could relate to and have a more realistic grasp on the project. For the remainder of the semester the two groups are planning on coordinating with each other on each step of the design process.

Show moreWith increased diversity in the U.S. workforce, there has become a greater need for organizations to defend against accusations of discrimination and thus a need to produce more accurate adverse impact statistics in discrimination cases. The purpose of the present study is to investigate two adjustments to a confidence interval procedure for calculating adverse impact to see if they give more adequate performance over the unadjusted Morris and Lobsenz (2000) confidence interval procedure. A Monte Carlo simulation revealed that using an adjustment for small sample sizes alleviates some of the problems found for the confidence interval procedure found in previous research. Specifically, adding a 0.5 adjustment to the confidence interval procedure increases the accuracy over the unadjusted procedure and the Agresti and Caffo (2000) procedure. Implications for practioners and researchers are included in the discussion.

Our work will build off of the previous team’s work and many of our objectives will be an extension of their original objectives. This semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Finish benchmark testing on the lawnmower including gas emissions Further research the safe storing and usage of hydrogen as a fuel Develop guidelines to create and maintain a safe laboratory area Investigate avenues to decrease overall conversion cost Perform the engine conversion Write a step-by-step conversion manual keeping in mind safety and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards Although the team’s main objective is to provide a safe way to convert a gas-powered lawnmower to a hydrogen-power lawnmower, the team will strive to create an environment in which team collaboration, the application engineering knowledge and ability, and individual passion for the project can flourish thus providing a rewarding and educational experience for all of the participants.
