Show moreSystems with high steady-state multiplicity and rich dynamic behavior are difficult to investigate using conventional reductionist methods. A network of more than five reactors hosting cubic autocatalytic reactions may potentially have more than 101 steady states and many distinct dynamic regimes, all for the same parameter set. This paper discusses how the static complexity of such systems can be measured to give a holistic picture. To achieve this, stochastic simulations were performed to statistically determine the bifurcation structure of the system, and the gathered information is summarized using a measure akin to fractal dimension. With this measure, the growth of static complexity is investigated as a function of the network size.

Show moreThis technical report describes the outcomes resulting from conducting interviews with professional estimators within the electrical construction industry. The purpose of the interviews was to identify whether native files are shared, why sharing does not occur more frequently, how file sharing might benefit the estimating process, and barriers to sharing native CAD files for the purpose of estimating from CAD drawings.

Show moreThe objective of this semester’s IPRO 309 will be to incorporate three seminars into the framework proposed by last year’s IPRO 309. Fall 2010’s IPRO 309 proposed an educational curriculum that helped train individuals in Orthotics and Prosthetics in Categories I, II, and III. The goal is to improve on last year’s IPRO proposal and bring it closer to completion. Although the awareness of medical advancements is central, the well-being of patients is also of equal importance. Compatibility of medical devices and their psychological impacts on patients need to be understood by people involved in orthotics and prosthetics. Also related to a better patient care, it is beneficial to create a feasible way of tracking patient information. To emphasize these, seminars will be introduced consisting of materials compatibility, patient well-being, and electronic medical record keeping. Material compatibility will explore aspects such as patient-device interaction and minimizing negative reactions due to the orthotic and prosthetic devices, which includes rashes or other sorts of discomfort. Patient well-being will evaluate the psychological impact of said devices on the patient and help them incorporate the devices into their daily lives. Electronic medical record keeping will introduce technology that will enable practitioners to gather and track the patient’s medical records with ease. The main technology to explore for this course would be the Quick Response (QR) Technology that is incorporated in many smartphones today. These seminars will help increase awareness that orthotics and prosthetics are not just medical fields, but instead a series of professional relationships with patients to help them endure the difficulties and pains they are going through. The goal is that medical professionals will be able to provide the best care possible to patients, both physically and mentally. Additional improvements will also be made on the capstone design course, introduced in previous IPROs, by incorporating methods being used in capstone courses at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Show moreMidwest Steel & Services, a growing company, needs assistance in expanding its business software and creating the means to provide a better real-time information system. Improved cost controls, purchasing capabilities and job tracking are among the specific issues the company faces. Accessing and sharing the information emanating from these activities will enable the company’s management practices to make better decisions and significantly contribute to business growth. The company's present software and internal processes are insufficient to meet their current and future business needs. The company has asked for the assistance of IPRO 342 to improve this issue. The IPRO team will review and evaluate the current situation and make necessary changes to enhance accuracy and productivity of the data management system. This assessment will come from both a system review as well as interviews of Midwest Steel staff. We will periodically travel to the company to gather information about them and present our findings.

Past IPRO’s on this subject have focused on the efficiency and benefits of BIM for electrical contracting companies. Our team however, will focus on the benefits of Business Development Strategies to improve and increase overall business– in this recession –in an ever more competitive environment. We plan to conclude our project with a “Playbook” which will present to our client proven, successful Business Development Strategies. This deliverable will help sponsor-members, from the Electrical Contractors’ Association of Chicago, to “get more work” – period.

Show moreThe main goal of the fall semester of IPRO 331 is to build off the previous two IPROs in terms of scientific and global data while further enhancing the knowledge of the general public throughout Chicago and the greater Chicago area. The team plans on utilizing the past data (which is presented on iGroups) and creating a more streamlined presentation that covers all of the main topics while enabling the group to add more relevant and interesting information. It is the group’s philosophy that there is no reason to re-do what past groups have done in terms of research when it is already made available. This will allow the group to focus more heavily on the main goal of community outreach. In terms of the community outreach, it is still the same goal as the previous IPROs to reach as many possible candidates as the semester allows. Another one of the group’s philosophies is that reaching as many people as possible is the key to making this semester’s IPRO successful.

Show moreLocated in Oakbrook, IL the architects and engineers of IPRO 315 will design a 22 story hotel. Together architects and engineers will modify and re analyze a structure created by pervious designers, and select any new materials for construction. In creating the hotel students will be responsible for the structural analysis of columns, beams, foundation, steel, and concrete design required to insure all serviceability requirements. The students will be required to follow the 2006 International Building Code, and secure the safety of all possible occupants. Management, leadership, ethics, and teamwork will be an integral part of building a large scale structure as students learn to work together on a “real life” project.

Show moreThe IPRO goal was to design a process for the production of the biotherapeutic compound IFN-Alpha from Chinese Hamster ovaries. After the process design was complete, a process flow diagram showing the actual process and separation steps was created and finally an economic analysis of the market feasibility of the product was prepared. The approach to the IPRO involved dividing the objectives into three major groups: (1) the Che 496 group was involved in the process design and the separation processes; (2) the Che 296 group was involved in the public perception of biotechnology, the useful products from biotechnology and the survey of the commercial biotherapeutic compounds; and (3) the 435 group was involved with the history of biotherapeutics, classification and actions infernos and the companies involved in the production of therapeutics. The individual members of these groups are seen on the team list below.

Show moreThe plan for this IPRO is to develop a design for a large scale parking garage that can accommodate about 500 cars. The objective of this project is to develop a design that goes beyond the standard parking systems used today. Rather, the attempt is to have a design which is more representative of “parking garages of future.” And as such, such features as quick handling of incoming and outgoing cars, efficiency in storage and aesthetics are considered in design. The building will be completely self-sufficient and will have to incorporate the architecture of the various buildings on campus. The design could have separate entrance and exit ramp towers, ramps incorporated with parking, or the futuristic design may be automated. An automated system will include a vehicle elevator of lift system to move the vehicle so the driver does not have to. The structure could be built with reinforced concrete or steel. The design will also include accessibility following the requirements set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Show moreDuring the fall 2009 semester, IPRO 358 plans to continue the development and creation of mock-ups for the Delta Hook Technology (DHT) as well as lay the foundation for a business model for Sparrowhawk, LLC, an early stage company. Sparrowhawk has investigated the concept for an innovative fishing hook that is not currently on the market or ready to be launched. The members of IPRO 358 will work together to design mock-ups of the DHT, test the mock-ups, and determine measures that can be taken to improve the DHT. Subsequent mock-ups will continue to improve based on results of the product testing. Simultaneously, we will be working towards better understanding the consumer’s behavior. This will aid in the determination of the probable distribution channels and the strategies to best use them.
