Show moreLast semester we built a prototype mediator which takes a user query and poses it to a variety of different data sources. In the worst case, it is as good as existing metasearch engines. Example query: “What are the three best restaraunts in Chicago?” Metasearch would search for the word “three” Mediator would identify appropriate sources to answer the question, such as a database of restaurant information.

The owners of Nana, and IPRO 317’s client, stressed the importance of reaching out to the community that has been always been a part of their lives, while spreading the message of sustainability and ecological awareness – all of which would fuel and accommodate future growth.

Show moreThe City of Chicago has been nominated as the U.S. Bid City for 2016 Olympic Games and currently remains a strong contender for this title. If Chicago is selected as the Host City it will face the enormous task of providing temporary housing for all Olympiad participants including athletes, coaches, organizers, and media reporters. Continuing in the vein of last semester’s IPRO, our IPRO is proposing an economical and environmentally friendly solution to this challenge. We propose to utilize thousands of old shipping containers that are cluttering up shipping yards in the Chicago area and to convert them into low-cost housing units. With proper foresight, this challenge can become an opportunity for the I P R O 3 3 9 City to demonstrate an attitude of sustainability that can serve as a model for other cities around the world to follow suit. The intense media attention directed towards the Olympic Games could be channeled to showcase our commitment to environmentally and socially responsible actions.

Show moreThis paper presents a new approach to vectoring jet thrust using a miniature fluidic actuator that provided spatially distributed mass addition. The fluidic actuators used had no moving parts and produced oscillatory flow with a square wave form at frequencies up to 1(.)6kHz. A subsonic jet with an exit diameter of 3(.)81cm was controlled using single and dual fluidic actuators, each with an equivalent circular diameter of 1(.)06mm. The fluidic nozzle was operated at pressures between 20(.)68 and 165(.)47kPa. The objectives of the present work included documentation of the actuation characteristics of fluidic devices, assessment of the effectiveness of fluidic devices for jet thrust vectoring, and evaluation of mass flow requirements for vectoring under various conditions. Measurements were made in the flow field using a pitot probe for the vectored and unvectored cases. Some acoustic measurements were made using microphones in the near-field and for selected cases particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were made. Thrust vectoring was obtained in low speed jets by momentum effects with fluidic device mass flow rates of only 2 x 10(-4) kg/sec (0-6% of main jet mass flow per fluidic oscillator). Although a single fluidic device produced vectoring of the primary jet, the dual fluidic device configuration (with two fluidic devices on either side of the jet exit) produced mass flux enhancement of 28% with no vectoring. Our results indicate that fluidic actuators have the potential for use in thrust vectoring, flow mixing and industrial flow deflection applications.

Show moreMost IPRO teams experience a significant delay in start up, spending about four weeks trying to figure out exactly what has previously been done, what problem they are trying to solve, and what the team must accomplish to solve the problem. This delay can be attributed to several reasons including high student turnover—85% of students in an IPRO are new each semester and there is a lack of delivering process knowledge between semesters.

Show moreTwitter is increasingly becoming a medium through which constituents can lobby their elected representatives in Congress about issues that matter to them. Past research has focused on how citizens communicate with each other or how members of Congress (MOCs) use social media in general; our research examines how citizens communicate with MOCs. We contribute to existing literature through the careful examination of hundreds of citizen-authored tweets and the development of a categorization scheme to describe common strategies of lobbying on Twitter. Our findings show that contrary to past research that assumed citizens used Twitter to merely shout out their opinions on issues, citizens utilize a variety of sophisticated techniques to impact political outcomes.

Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities and grounds. Three major spaces currently hold latent potential at the school: the abandoned convent/dormitory, library and inner courtyards, used correctly they can become a catalyst for positive change. It is proposed that the dormitory be torn down, in its place a “community center” would be constructed. The space will service extracurricular activities at the school, public outreach programs (i.e. youth groups, cub/girl scouts, etc.), club rooms and a new space for library books storage and usage. The second space being addressed is the library, given its current isolated position the space would be transformed into a communication and media center equipped with the technology necessary for worldwide communication. The third space addressed is the inner courtyards of the building. With six dispersed throughout the school grounds, they can become an active part of the recreational aspect of the school’s environment: places of social interaction, outdoor classrooms, etc. Additionally, the greening techniques proposed for the school’s facilities will include methods for efficiency improvement, education and school promotion.

Show moreFor the United States, substantial numbers of shipping containers must be transferred from one side of the country to the other. As the major highway and railroad crossroad, Chicago receives the bulk of this intercontinental inter-modal traffic, making it the third largest container port in the world. In many instances, containers are even moved from one railroad to another by truck, exhausting street and highway capacity. Meteoric growth in container movement is expected to continue.

Show more1048 million gallons of water is used in Chicago everyday. Chicago replenishes almost none of it. Although there is no water shortage currently, many believe that water will be to the next century what oil is to this century: a huge commodity. Twenty percent of the world's potable water is contained in the Great Lakes. In order to be responsible consumers of this natural resource, Chicago is looking into different plans to return water to Lake Michigan. The purpose of Growing Water IPRO is to create a prototype of an Eco-boulevard on the IIT campus that will serve as an example of practices that could be implemented across the Chicago-land area to manage and naturally purify storm water and sewage water so it can be reintroduced to Lake Michigan. These Eco-boulevards will also serve as educational facilities to inform the community about the growing scarcity of water and how to conserve this precious resource.

Show moreIt is highly desirable to have a statistical process monitoring (SPM) system that detects the abnormalities in process operations quickly with as few missed and false alarms as possible while the process operates under various operating conditions An agent-based combined monitoring and fault detection framework is proposed in this study. In this framework, different SPM techniques compete with and complement each other to enhance detection speed and accuracy. SPM techniques from literature such as principal component analysis (PCA), multiblock PCA (MBPCA), and dynamic PCA (DPCA) techniques are implemented in this agent-based process supervision system An agent performance assessment and agent management layer provides dynamic adaptation of the supervision system and improves the performance of SPM The statistical information coming from each of the statistical techniques is summarized through a consensus mechanism The performance of the agent-based consensus mechanism using different consensus criteria is tested for system disturbances of various magnitudes The effectiveness of the proposed agent-based framework with different consensus criteria is evaluated based on fault detection times and missed alarm rates and the adaptation of the supervision system is illustrated

Show moreThe Swyne Project‟s objective is to extend the capabilities of the semantic search engine developed in the previous semester of this particular IPRO project. Proposed extensions include the ability to search for “entities” (e.g., people) and their relationships to other entities in a fact database and implementing user interface support for the extensions. Another goal of the Swyne Project is to work on our collective soft skills. These include, but are not limited to, interpersonal communications, presentations, management functions, and time management. These skills are all critical to not only a successful project, but also a successful career outside of college. Our search engine will hopefully be an inspiration to others who are interested in working on a semantic search engine in the future and expanding upon our results.
