Show moreThe purpose of our team is to save lives and prevent accidents involving construction equipment damaging underground utilities. We seek to do this by introducing the Enhanced Vision System, or EVS. The goal then for this semester is to design and build this system for displaying the location of buried utilities to the operators of construction vehicles. This includes producing a proof-of-concept prototype as well as designing the final product that we would produce. As this project is not merely an IPRO, but also an EnPRO, we are also considering how to turn this idea into a successful business venture. To this end, we will be preforming research and creating a business plan.

Show moreThe present IPRO is a continuing research based on the findings of the previous semester during which they concluded that planned maintenances in a coal fired plant are carried out by ‘Engineering Specialists’ and the ‘Operations Manager” whereas unplanned outages are taken care of by the ‘Shift Supervisor’ . These findings lead us to our primary goals, namely: • To conduct a “Day-in-the-Life” study for both the two categories of personnel described above by direct solicitation of information from plant personnel. • Develop methods to gather this information such as surveys and/or interviews. • Compile the gathered data into a comprehensive report which should benefit the sponsor in better understanding their potential users.

Show moreThe present study explored the possible roles of perinatal photoperiod and latitude as predictors of later reaction to chronobiological stress, specifically the experience of winter in Chicago (41.89°N). Participants consisted of new undergraduate and graduate students at a technological university in Chicago, Illinois (N = 64 - 76). The sample was 62% male, ranged in age from 18 to 38 years (M = 22.5, SD = 4.3), and was born mainly in North America and East/South Asia. The vegetative and cognitive/affective subscales of the Seasonal Assessment Form (SAF; Young et al., 2012) were completed by participants between February 7 and March 7, 2011. Results indicated that both perinatal photoperiod and latitude have a significant effect on vegetative but not cognitive symptom severity. A curvilinear relationship between perinatal photoperiod and winter vegetative symptom severity was displayed with optimal adjustment (minimum vegetative symptoms) occurring near LD 12:12. Attention should be paid to the stronger effect of latitude at birth over perinatal photoperiod on symptom severity. Implications, limitations, and future directions for research are discussed.

Show moreThe plan for this IPRO is to develop a design for a large scale parking garage that can accommodate about 500 cars. The objective of this project is to develop a design that goes beyond the standard parking systems used today. Rather, the attempt is to have a design which is more representative of “parking garages of future.” And as such, such features as quick handling of incoming and outgoing cars, efficiency in storage and aesthetics are considered in design. The building will be completely self-sufficient and will have to incorporate the architecture of the various buildings on campus. The design could have separate entrance and exit ramp towers, ramps incorporated with parking, or the futuristic design may be automated. An automated system will include a vehicle elevator of lift system to move the vehicle so the driver does not have to. The structure could be built with reinforced concrete or steel. The design will also include accessibility following the requirements set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Show moreThe purpose of the research done in the IPRO 306 Mood Research Lab is to contribute to the body of knowledge regarding the patterns and accuracy of retrospective recall of affect in persons with Major Depressive Disorder. This will be accomplished by using Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) equipped with a standardized mood inventory to measure the recall accuracy in volunteers from the non-hospitalized, clinically depressed population and comparing it to that of volunteers from the healthy population.

Show moreThe City of Chicago has been nominated as the U.S. Bid City for 2016 Olympic Games and currently remains a strong contender for this title. If Chicago is selected as the Host City it will face the enormous task of providing temporary housing for all Olympiad participants including athletes, coaches, organizers, and media reporters. Continuing in the vein of last semester’s IPRO, our IPRO is proposing an economical and environmentally friendly solution to this challenge. We propose to utilize thousands of old shipping containers that are cluttering up shipping yards in the Chicago area and to convert them into low-cost housing units. With proper foresight, this challenge can become an opportunity for the I P R O 3 3 9 City to demonstrate an attitude of sustainability that can serve as a model for other cities around the world to follow suit. The intense media attention directed towards the Olympic Games could be channeled to showcase our commitment to environmentally and socially responsible actions.

Show moreThis paper presents a new approach to vectoring jet thrust using a miniature fluidic actuator that provided spatially distributed mass addition. The fluidic actuators used had no moving parts and produced oscillatory flow with a square wave form at frequencies up to 1(.)6kHz. A subsonic jet with an exit diameter of 3(.)81cm was controlled using single and dual fluidic actuators, each with an equivalent circular diameter of 1(.)06mm. The fluidic nozzle was operated at pressures between 20(.)68 and 165(.)47kPa. The objectives of the present work included documentation of the actuation characteristics of fluidic devices, assessment of the effectiveness of fluidic devices for jet thrust vectoring, and evaluation of mass flow requirements for vectoring under various conditions. Measurements were made in the flow field using a pitot probe for the vectored and unvectored cases. Some acoustic measurements were made using microphones in the near-field and for selected cases particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were made. Thrust vectoring was obtained in low speed jets by momentum effects with fluidic device mass flow rates of only 2 x 10(-4) kg/sec (0-6% of main jet mass flow per fluidic oscillator). Although a single fluidic device produced vectoring of the primary jet, the dual fluidic device configuration (with two fluidic devices on either side of the jet exit) produced mass flux enhancement of 28% with no vectoring. Our results indicate that fluidic actuators have the potential for use in thrust vectoring, flow mixing and industrial flow deflection applications.

Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities and grounds. Three major spaces currently hold latent potential at the school: the abandoned convent/dormitory, library and inner courtyards, used correctly they can become a catalyst for positive change. It is proposed that the dormitory be torn down, in its place a “community center” would be constructed. The space will service extracurricular activities at the school, public outreach programs (i.e. youth groups, cub/girl scouts, etc.), club rooms and a new space for library books storage and usage. The second space being addressed is the library, given its current isolated position the space would be transformed into a communication and media center equipped with the technology necessary for worldwide communication. The third space addressed is the inner courtyards of the building. With six dispersed throughout the school grounds, they can become an active part of the recreational aspect of the school’s environment: places of social interaction, outdoor classrooms, etc. Additionally, the greening techniques proposed for the school’s facilities will include methods for efficiency improvement, education and school promotion.

Show more1048 million gallons of water is used in Chicago everyday. Chicago replenishes almost none of it. Although there is no water shortage currently, many believe that water will be to the next century what oil is to this century: a huge commodity. Twenty percent of the world's potable water is contained in the Great Lakes. In order to be responsible consumers of this natural resource, Chicago is looking into different plans to return water to Lake Michigan. The purpose of Growing Water IPRO is to create a prototype of an Eco-boulevard on the IIT campus that will serve as an example of practices that could be implemented across the Chicago-land area to manage and naturally purify storm water and sewage water so it can be reintroduced to Lake Michigan. These Eco-boulevards will also serve as educational facilities to inform the community about the growing scarcity of water and how to conserve this precious resource.
