Show moreThe mission of IPRO 333 is to assist the Crop to Cup Company with the design and building of an enclosure for a temporary storage facility within the vicinity of their largest producing farming zone for robusta coffee in the Mbale region of Uganda. The sponsor, along with the team, has decided that the best method for addressing the local and global needs of the farmers is to present the research and design personally. Therefore, IPRO 333 will be fundraising to help finance the forthcoming trip to Uganda to present to the farming communities.

Show more1. Determine the amount of force to cut 6, 8, 10 sheets of 20 lb paper, taking into account the width and length of the shred. Once the amount of force is determined, develop a computer simulation model that can predict the amount of force required based upon the following variable inputs: number of sheets, shred width, and shred length. 2. Through computer simulation or prototype development, design an efficient gear train that optimizes the number of gears and minimizes the motor size based upon data obtained from previous semester’s data. The goal is to develop and simulate a gear train that can withstand 500 cycles at maximum sheet capacity. 3. Develop acoustical sound dampeners or “tune” the shredder to reduce the amount of noise created during the shredding process, leveraging information obtained from previous semesters’ data. The goal is to reduce the noise output by 10 decibels

Show moreChicago is the third largest intermodal freight hub in the world. Joliet, being so close, makes a great place as a depot to intercept much of Chicago’s goods, it is also far enough away to avoid further congestion in the city. Currently one hub exists in Joliet (Elwood BNSF), another is being developed (Centerpoint), and one is being proposed off of Lorenzo road. Our sponsor, Mi-Jack, has asked us to come up with solutions to make these freight hubs more efficient.

Show moreMost of the existing large scale urban food depositories / pantries are based on a model of food production and distribution which has not changed in the last forty years. It is essentially the same model used by large private grocery chains, involving off-site food acquisition (either through production or donation) and dissemination to large distribution centers. In some cases, these distribution centers are then accessed by either individuals or organizations which truck the goods to smaller, local urban distribution points. In other cases, patrons are required to visit the large facility, which it typically in a less accessible location.

Show moreThe main goal of IPRO 303 is to investigate how SmartSignal’s modeling technology can provide value in detecting problems on environmental systems: The main objectives that SmartSignal would like for the team to investigate are: · What are the regulatory drivers – changes in laws/regulation occurring at various points in time? Are the regulations fleet-wide or regionally specific? Can credits be traded? Etc. · What types of systems are being deployed to remove what pollutants? Describe different sub-types and configurations within a type of system, and how common they are. · How much instrumentation is available on these systems, and what signals are measured (temperature, pressure, chemistry analysis, etc.)? How much diversity is there in the levels of available instrumentation? IPRO 303 Spring’09 13th February 2009 IPRO303 Project Plan Page 2 of 7 · What are the failure and performance degradation problems that occur? How common are they? What are the ramifications of these problems – outages, derates, having to burn more expensive fuel or turn up the “peaking” generation units that are more expensive to run, etc.? · How can the available instrumentation be used to remotely monitor and detect developing problems?

Show moreThe objective of this project is to identify, evaluate, and prioritize technologies that can be used to achieve zero discharge in a 500 MW power plant using Powder River Basin coal. To accomplish this mission, we will: 1. Determine the water balance around a typical facility 2. Perform a qualitative assessment of the viability of the three technologies above toward meeting zero discharge. 3. Determine the size, first cost and operating cost for each combination of zero discharge unit operations considered 4. Identify creative options for reusing treated discharge water within the plant 5. Identify emerging technologies that might play a major role in the future.

Show moreOver 250,000 people in the U.S. alone die annually from sudden cardiac arrest, and many of those that survive suffer brain damage, which can begin within minutes of the heart attack. Major risks among survivors include tissue damage, including brain damage. We are currently developing three life saving devices which could greatly decrease the risks which cardiac arrest victims face, and also save lives.

Show moreA collapsible, transportable personnel isolation apparatus or device is used to isolate a patient in a controlled environment and to protect the patient against biological or chemical hazards during transport of the patient. The collapsible apparatus has a flexible containment wall which is expandable from a collapsed, stored state to an expanded state to receive the patient. At least a portion of the containment wall is clear to allow observation of the patient within an interior region of the device. An air filtration system is provided for filtering air between the airtight interior region and the ambient atmosphere. Preferably, the apparatus has various ports therein, such as glove ports, pass through ports, access ports for cardiac leads, infusion line ports, and ventilation ports. Preferably, an air filtration device provides a flow rate of 4 to 6 cfm to prevent an undesirable build-up of carbon dioxide and provides a predetermined air pressure within the interior regions. In one form, the containment device is a clam shell litter type for transport of a prone patient and in another form the device is a jacket type with a hood defining an air impermeable chamber for an ambulatory patient who carries an ambulatory air filtration device for supplying and filtering the air impermeable chamber.

Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities and grounds. Three major spaces currently hold latent potential at the school: the abandoned convent/dormitory, library and inner courtyards, used correctly they can become a catalyst for positive change. It is proposed that the dormitory be torn down, in its place a “community center” would be constructed. The space will service extracurricular activities at the school, public outreach programs (i.e. youth groups, cub/girl scouts, etc.), club rooms and a new space for library books storage and usage. The second space being addressed is the library, given its current isolated position the space would be transformed into a communication and media center equipped with the technology necessary for worldwide communication. The third space addressed is the inner courtyards of the building. With six dispersed throughout the school grounds, they can become an active part of the recreational aspect of the school’s environment: places of social interaction, outdoor classrooms, etc. Additionally, the greening techniques proposed for the school’s facilities will include methods for efficiency improvement, education and school promotion.
