Show moreThe Quadratic Exponential (QE) model is a market standard simulation method for the Heston stochastic volatility model. We identify certain numerical problems with the standard discretization and modify the original method to correct these problems. We implement our modified QE scheme for the Heston model in the Guaranteed Automatic Integration Library (GAIL)|a suite of algorithms that includes Monte Carlo and quasi-Monte Carlo methods for multidimensional integration and computation of means. GAIL computes answers to satisfy user-defined error tolerances. We also implement variance reduction techniques for our modified QE scheme in GAIL. The numerical results show that our modified scheme is fast and accurate, and satisfies the user-defined error tolerances.

Show moreThe objective of IPRO 320, Sustainability Planning of IIT Buildings, is to contribute to the problem solving necessary to implement energy efficiency improvements in existing buildings and to the central steam and electric systems. Alternate possibilities for energy use in context with their building type and surroundings will be discovered through research of other university buildings at the University of Chicago, Loyola University, and IIT. This research will then be used in finding alternate forms of energy generation to secure the sustainability of the IIT campus.

Show moreConventional refrigeration uses a great deal of electricity, a resource scare in developing areas, and as a consequence it is not viable. However if a system that is inexpensive, reliable under local conditions, and operates with only minimal electric power from a solar cell or battery can be introduced it would be a tremendous asset. Faced with such a requirements this project addresses these issues in order to find a solution that is economically and socially feasible.

Show moreHamid Arastoopour in Chemical Engineering has developed and patented technology for processing scrap rubber from tires in an extruder. This technology breaks the chemical bonds that result in the rubber being vulcanized. This allows the rubber to be reformed into new shapes and re-vulcanized resulting a true recycling of the material into new rubber parts. Most other rubber recycling technology only grinds up the rubber. These technologies allow the rubber to be used as a filler but does not allow true recycling of the rubber. There is a tremendous supply of used tires are a significant environmental problem as well as waste of a potential resource. This technology could provide the means to effectively use this waste. This EnPRO will look at the issues and opportunities associated with commercializing this exciting technology. This will include an assessment of additional technology development that is needed, an analysis of the cost of implementing this technology, sources of scrap rubber, as well as the market for the recycled rubber. It will also look at possible ways to fund the development. The EnPRO will be supported by a business representative in addition to technical faculty.

Show moreLocated in Oakbrook, IL the architects and engineers of IPRO 315 will design a 22 story hotel. Together architects and engineers will modify and re analyze a structure created by pervious designers, and select any new materials for construction. In creating the hotel students will be responsible for the structural analysis of columns, beams, foundation, steel, and concrete design required to insure all serviceability requirements. The students will be required to follow the 2006 International Building Code, and secure the safety of all possible occupants. Management, leadership, ethics, and teamwork will be an integral part of building a large scale structure as students learn to work together on a “real life” project.

Show moreThere is evidence that people have been harvesting rainwater since 4000BC. The Roman Empire developed an intricate infrastructure to direct water to be used for irrigation and sanitary purposes. For the most part, modern society has abandoned the practice of harvesting rainwater because water sources have been plentiful and inexpensive. Residents have become accustom to turning on the tap and receiving potable water from their Municipal Authority or a free standing well. Essentially rainwater is undervalued and as such has not been given the priority it deserves. This circumstance is rapidly changing as fresh water is becoming more difficult to acquire. Municipalities are raising the price of water, adding regulations to restrict its use and promoting the rapid growth of investment in „green‟ lifestyle solutions. These actions are increasing public awareness of the need to reduce our “water footprint” and a willingness to invest in conservation systems. In urban settings, two-thirds of the water provided by municipalities goes to residential properties. In a typical single family home, 70 percent of the water used annually is used in toilets and outside the home for lawn irrigation, gardens, washing cars, swimming pools etc. These applications could successfully utilize non-potable water, if a reliable source existed for capturing and recycling it in a convenient and affordable way. This IPRO will develop and test a system targeted at homeowners for rainwater harvest.

Show moreThis IPRO will focus on the road and rail modes of transportation. Specifically, the team will investigate intermodal rail yards that specialize in transferring containers from trucks to trains, and vice versa. It will then put this knowledge to use by designing an actual intermodal rail yard for the Gary, Indiana area. The objective of this IPRO is to produce a thorough site plan for the Gary rail yard, a computer program to communicate with truck drivers, and an encompassing business plan.

Recently planned to be the home of the 2016 Olympic Village, with the loss of the bid the land has been abandoned. IPRO 356 is tasked with the challenge of designing a plan to redevelop the site. Building on previous work established by IPRO’s 359 and 356, we will use the first winning anchor and master plan created for the site and develop a second anchor. This second anchor and updated master plan aims at meeting the needs of the surrounding neighborhood while bringing life back to the area.

Show moreThis IPRO team has the unique opportunity to recreate, from the original plans, a working replica of the first clinically successful artificial kidney. Designed, built, and implemented in 1942, Willem Kolff’s rotating drum was the first successful extra-corporeal medical technological device. It provided a successful technological reference point for subsequent development of dialysis devices. This device literally established the field of artificial organs. There are no working models in the Western Hemisphere. Two exist in Europe both in the Netherlands.

Show moreFreshwater is one of Earth’s most precious resources and is now increasing in scarcity. Global warming induced climate change is now changing rain patterns and causing record drought, growing global populations are increasing demand, and the individual demand per person is increasing and human populations urbanize and adopt modern plumbing. The biggest contributor to increasing demand for water is mismanagement and pollution. However for this project we will be focusing on water quantity rather than quality.

Show moreThe scope of this project is to present a variety of solutions, determining and defining a system required to implement a digital façade for the new Hype Park Art Center. The pioneering icon for the Hyde Park Art Center will engage neighbors and those who pass by, in addition to ideally attracting visitors from all over Chicago and beyond. The projection area will be the Art Center’s signature while serving many exhibition and studio needs by bringing art directly into the view of the community it serves. The idea is that the art created because of this façade will be a signature as well. Because of this, the façade system itself needs to accommodate many different digital art mediums to function as a blank canvas with opportunity for a creative manipulation by artists, visitors, and the Hyde Park Art Center to the full capabilities of the technology.
