Show moreDuring the fall 2006 IPRO team will be responsible for the second phase that will focus on customizing the application for the Play for Peace organization and advancing the Joomla! community movement. There are a number of approaches that will be taken to design and complete the website, from a technical point of view, which include beta testing and finalizing the code and functional sections. The problem that this IPRO faces this semester is to take the website that currently exists, determine its bugs, and make final adjustments for a client release.

Show moreThe goal of the IPRO is to try to find an inexpensive, but accurate way of measuring the power output of a rider on a bicycle. Problems with systems currently available are: some products are not compatible with all bike systems causing the need to purchase new parts, the cost of the available products is expensive, and some of the available measuring systems are not very accurate.

Show moreIPRO346 will focus on familiarizing itself with British Petroleum’s (BP) wastewater treatment plant (WTP) for its oil refinery in Whiting, IN. Specifically, this IPRO will analyze the current permits and their stipulations regarding the amount of ammonia and total suspended solids (TSS) in the wastewater being dumped in Lake Michigan. Ultimately, possible methods and designs will be devised to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS remaining in treated wastewater. These designs will take the form of a process flow sheet with a computer simulation to model the designs. At the culmination of this IPRO we will have several different models for possible upgrades to the Whiting refinery wastewater treatment plant to reduce the levels of ammonia and TSS in the wastewater entering Lake Michigan as well as a cost to implement each solution.

Show moreIPRO 356 is a team of students from multiple disciplines tasked with the goal of designing a second anchor for the Michael Reese to accompany the planned continued care community designed by the previous semester’s IPRO. The anchor will help meet the needs of the community as well as improve the economic condition of the current surrounding area by bringing jobs, people, and revenue to the Michael Reese site. The team will help in a revitalization of Chicago’s south side.

Show moreIn the last years, the understanding of jets and jet substructure has become increasingly important, in particular in the context of new physics searches. Many new physics models involve highly boosted hadronically-decaying particles, which result in jet-like objects with large masses and an intrinsic substructure. Discrimination of these heavy jets from ordinary quark and gluon jets is possible through a plethora of new techniques. The understanding of jets can be exploited also for the identification of pileup jets and for the discrimination between quark jets and gluon jets. A sampling of these techniques is discussed together with their validation on collider data recorded in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8TeV with the CMS detector in the year 2012. The commissioning in the boosted regime of algorithms used to identify jets originating from bottom quarks is also discussed. Many studies have highlighted the potential of using jet substructure techniques to improve the sensitivity in physics searches. An overview of recent CMS results employing these techniques is presented.

Show moreThis IPRO is working on the problem of creating an assistive device that will help blind and visually impaired (BVI) individuals exercise in a swimming pool and elsewhere with increased independence and also to present this technology to the community in a way that is usable to them. In the interest of achieving both of these goals the team has organized its structure into a technology team and a communication team, so that once the device has been created the methodology for teaching the community to use it will already be tested and approved.

Show moreIPRO 303 is working on the user interface for SmartSignal Corporation’s software which predicts equipment failures in coal fired power plants. We are now in the third stage of the project. We are to deliver the user interface of the software based on the studies done by two previous semesters. SmartSignal suggested that we also consider specific elements of the software such as the clear presentation of developing fault information, and the efficient communication system between users. An appropriate UI will utilize SmartSignal’s predictive analysis software to provide an efficient and clear means for power plant personnel to: · Predict or identify equipment faults · Understand the predicted faults · Prioritize the disposition of the predicted faults or highlight urgent or important faults · Reduce the need for plant personnel to have many years of experience or “institutional knowledge” The ultimate goal of this project is to introduce an innovative approach to the user interface which SmartSignal can use for predicting equipment failures in coal fire power plants. To realize this, we set these objectives. · Research and collect information relative to the User Interfaces [UI] from the first hand users of the software while examining the study done by the previous IPRO303. · Create the Requirements Document for the UI in light of the concerns expressed by SmartSignal and the results of research. · Generate several possible UIs based upon the Requirements Document stated above. · Select one of the Several UI for development of details and revise it based upon the input from SmartSignal. · Add details and finalize the design of the selected UI.

Show moreThe objective of this IPRO is to choose an appropriate method (or combination of multiple methods) for desulfurizing coal before combustion takes place in a furnace for energy production. Three methods will be researched in order to find the best way of desulfurization- physical, chemical, and biological. Whichever method(s) is found to be the most effective at removing sulfur from coal will be chosen. After this decision the group will move forward and design the process equipment; later an economic assessment will be done to cost the equipment. All of the group’s goals will be completed within this semester.

Show moreIPRO 331, its team members, and all involved faculty are devoted to enhancing awareness in the community to the issues surrounding global warming. Our goal is to give PowerPoint presentations to several different audiences, especially today’s younger generations in elementary school, high school, and college, in order to both educate and interest people in these issues. Our presentations are meant to be objective – we want to present the facts about global warming research from credible sources. Additionally, with the help of our website and contacts, we hope to be another driving force in the sustainability movement and climate change research. Our purpose can be summed up in a quote included at the end of each of our presentations: “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.” – Charles Darwin

Secondary Objectives The secondary objectives are necessary for accomplishing the primary objective. To ensure that the program will be accredited, many guidelines must be followed; these guidelines have set the secondary objectives as follows: • Develop several educational modules concerning common diseases and their orthotic treatments • Develop several low-cost demonstrations and hand-outs to compliment the educational modules • Carefully follow ISPO requirements to ensure accreditation • Translate all material to Spanish for use in Latin America • Develop a three day short course to be presented at a Prosthetics and Orthotics conference at Bogotá, Colombia in May 2007 • Work with educators in Colombia to develop a program similar to IPRO 309

Show moreThe Spring 2005 IPRO 305 team will be continuing the efforts of ongoing research at IIT in the realm of Pervasive Computing. The team will be focusing on the challenge of integrating Pervasive Computing into a specific aspect of the IIT campus. The overall vision of the IPRO 305 team is to continue efforts to develop an application called HawkTour – a virtual Illinois Institute of Technology tour guide. HawkTour will provide a completely new approach to the campus tour at IIT. The application has been designed to run on Tablet PC’s or other devices with similar computing capabilities, and provides the user with general campus information while guiding the user around campus and maintaining complete awareness of the user’s current location and intent, thereby adapting the tour to the user’s own personal preferences. The objective for this semester’s team is to refine the application and come up with a new version with an optimized content database, a more sophisticated hardware interface, improve the mapping methodology, work on the user interface and scale of the application to simpler devices such as cell phones and personal digital assistants.
