Show moreIPRO 332’s objective is to develop the groundwork for a tool, to be implemented either in Chicago Public School classrooms or community centers, which will deliver balanced, non-biased information to its constituents about energy issues that affect their daily lives. We seek to do this, firstly, by familiarizing ourselves with the most pressing energy issues, identifying knowledge deficits concerning these issues, and selecting areas around which our concentrated effort will be most productive. Second, we will be studying current teaching methodologies and technologies in order to ensure our tool is as effective as possible. And, finally, we will identify companies, agencies and organizations currently working to deliver energy information, and learn from their expertise and experience. Through this research, we hope to learn from those currently endeavoring to spread fact-based information about energy, while developing a program of our own that ascribes to the requirements of the Chicago Public Schools’ Curriculum guidelines.

Show moreThe IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester is to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research and for the space itself to be able to be as sustainable as possible throughout research this semester. Since the end goal is a rather ambitious one, a more realistic goal is to have an energy plan for following IPRO’s to work off of and to have the space cleared so that the developed plan can be tested. The team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable energy systems. For this fall semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Research office utilities that consume low amounts of energy, and investigate how to improve the efficiency of current utilities. Research and test various energy efficient lighting solutions. Research environmentally friendly floor, wall, and ceiling finishes along with necessary office furniture. Develop a website to display the development progress of the Zero-Energy Lab and provide information regarding “green technology” Clean and prepare the 6,000 ft2 space for future inhabitants. Using the research, develop a program proposal for the Zero-Energy Lab.

Show moreThe specific plan for our IPRO is construct a synthetic biological circuit, that is both novel, aesthetically pleasing and independent of the host organism. This is a first step toward implementing entirely synthetic organisms that can be designed to a specification. The target we have chosen is a synchronized biological oscillator, implemented in a vertebrate organism, the zebrafish. To produce an organism requires a wide variety of skills and tasks. Accordingly we have organized into subteams, each responsible for progress in some area, with an administrative sub team overseeing all the events.

Show moreA method and apparatus for producing ultrafine metal powders in which a laser beam is focused on the surface of a workpiece or feedstock and moved thereacross so as to create a cavity within the workpiece through melting and vaporization that contains the metal melted to form the cavity. A subsonic pulsating blast of inert gas is directed at the cavity to atomize the molten metal, rapidly cool the resulting droplets, and transport the droplets to a collection area. The cavity formed by the laser beam is a "keyhole" of deep cavity having a depth approximately three to four times greater than its width. The focal point of the laser beam is moved across the workpiece at a rate from approximately 50 to 80 inches per minute to ensure that the molten metal remains in the cavity prior to the gas atomization. Alloy metal powders can be produced by this method of laser blast atomization providing an alloying metal at the base metal where the cavity is formed so that, upon melting of the base metal, the alloy metal will melt into solution with the molten base metal in the cavity prior to gas atomization. Additionally, nonmetallic impurities may be removed from the molten metal contained within the cavity formed by the laser beam by vaporization.

Show moreThe overall aim of the project is to improve and enhance the image of Illinois Institute of Technology, both as an institution and a physical campus, in regards to sustainability and “green” practices. To that end, the current semester is focused on several design projects based on concepts generated in the previous semesters along with input from the current semesters to enhance a new “green” campus. We will also be spreading information how IIT is currently acting in a sustainable fashion and how students on campus can contribute to our image as a sustainable campus.

Show moreThe first objective of IPRO 341 is to research four areas in which nanotechnology is being applied. Through this research the team will gain a basic understanding of the workings behind nanotechnology and determine applications which may interest our target audience (see second objective). The second objective of IPRO 341 is to determine a target audience. Since this semester’s team will focus on public assessment and education, a target audience must be chosen to present our research findings to. The third objective of IPRO 341 is to assess the current level of knowledge which the target audience has pertaining to nanotechnology. By determining what the audience already knows about the subject the team can organize and present the necessary information. The fourth objective of IPRO 341 is to educate our target audience. Public education of nanotechnology and its applications is the mission of this IPRO team. All previous objectives are part of this encompassing goal of public education. The team will work on putting together a tool for public education which can be used by the target audience to gain knowledge on the subject of nanotechnology. The team also plans to spread interest of the tool so that it may be used to educate the public.

Show moreRecreational fishing is a sizable market, generating over a billion dollars of economic output and providing well over a million American’s with jobs. There are many variations of fishing hooks available that retain the same basic shape and structure, the most popular examples being, the standard J-hook, treble hook and the new “Trokar”, which is “surgically sharpened”. However, there are many limitations associated with existing fishing hooks. One such limitation is that fishing hooks are not able to reliably hold the fish after embedding. Introducing a barb to the hook usually solves this issue, doing so however creates problems when setting the hook and furthermore, barbs can cause damage to the fish during the removal process. Another concern is that contemporary fishing hooks have problems with snagging on nearby rock formations, algae, weeds, or other vegetation in the water.

Show moreOver the years there has been intensive research on visual prosthesis around the world and significant technological advancements have been made. The Intracortical Visual Prosthesis Team (IVP) at IIT has been researching and developing a procedure as well as a device which will be implanted within the human visual cortex. The device consists of sub-miniature electrodes which will artificially stimulate the visual cortex by introducing electrical currents in to the cortex. The IIT Team has reached a point in their 10 year development process where they would like to proceed with implanting the device in a volunteer in the next few years. Implantation of a device which provides artificial vision is an extraordinarily complex process. In the initial stages the medical and engineering aspects are the most prevalent ones, but as the project moves forward there are some questions that inevitably must be answered or at least considered. These questions deal much less with the technology and much more with the volunteers that will eventually have these complex devices implanted. To try and answer some of these questions, in IPRO 306 we will look into various medical, political, engineering, ethical, media and psychological issues that we believe may become of greater importance as the project progresses into the implementation stage. We will also look into the public relations aspect as well as some political and psychological issues. Based on our research and understanding we will provide several issues that we see as needing to be addressed in the future and recommend possible solutions to them.
