Show moreIPRO 324, Disaster Recovery: Do-It-Yourself Home Building, is focused on designing a building manual to aid disaster victims in building new buildings. The objectives of this group are to continue the efforts made from the previous semester. This includes the creation of a manual illustrating how to build the design, design for handicap accessibility as a provision to the current design, to market this manual to a disaster relief organization that would be responsible for the distribution, to find a new client who would be interested in having this project built, and to find funding in order to build the design. Over the course of this semester, the team will be focusing on creating the manual and attempting to build the design at a site either in New Harmony, Louisana or Gulfport, Mississippi where potential clients are. The house at a bare minimum consists of a multipurpose room, a kitchen, and a bathroom; and will cost approximately $17,000. This is an affordable home/structure considering the cost of building a house now. The team is aware that some families are not fortunate enough to have a savings of $20,000 when these unexpected disasters occur. For this reason, it is an objective of the team to obtain funding.

Show moreStudents will work in teams to accomplish research and present findings and recommendations about solar thermal as a viable renewable energy industry. The IPRO team will address the following goals and tasks: Research existing solar thermal products in the marketplace. Determine geographic locations worldwide where solar thermal is currently a viable alternative to fossil fuel consuming heating systems. Outline the history of solar thermal development in the United States and other world markets. Research the history of and current technology available for solar thermal installations. Rate various systems by efficiency, cost benefit, physical size required for heat production, ease of operation, durability and other criteria determined significant by the team. Outline construction and design criteria for installation in new and existing buildings. Using an existing building on the IIT campus, develop a plan for installation of solar thermal to produce heat and domestic hot water for the building. Determine how much fossil fuel consumption would be avoided through the installation of a solar thermal solution. Determine the approximate payback of the new solar thermal system based on today's energy, solar thermal system costs and construction costs. Illustrate examples of solar thermal installations on existing and new buildings to determine the effect solar thermal will have on the overall architecture of a building. Develop methodologies for incorporating solar thermal into the design of existing and new buildings which is aesthetically appropriate.

Show moreThe IPRO 336 team is working with National Pasteurized Eggs, Inc. to create and test a new marketing strategy for the Davidson’s brand pasteurized eggs. Pasteurized eggs are a reasonably new product in the egg industry and, as of yet, have not gained a large percentage of retail market sales. Pasteurized eggs are comparable in many aspects to their competitors but offer the added advantage of being virtually bacteria and salmonella free. Due to this fact, Davidson’s eggs have grown exponentially in the food service market, especially for hospitals and other locations catering to at-risk groups. The company is now seeking to expand in the retail market and is looking to revise their current marketing strategy to meet this goal, with the help of the IPRO team. After an initial review, the IPRO group split up into sub-groups that will focus on different aspects of the marketing plan, including Consumer Education/Psychology, Competitor Analysis, Display, Packaging/Labeling, Promotions, and Website Improvements. Through both secondary and primary research (in the form of consumer surveys), these groups will gain an understanding of the egg market, the average egg buyer, and how the marketing strategy can be most efficiently revised. Once the research has been completed, the sub-groups will be able to create a design or marketing technique in their area of improvement, test their ideas, and revise as necessary. The IPRO group is seeking a final product that will boost retail sales of Davidson’s pasteurized egg and increase consumer awareness of the large benefits of such a product.

Show moreThe objective of this IPRO is to choose an appropriate method (or combination of multiple methods) for desulfurizing coal before combustion takes place in a furnace for energy production. Three methods will be researched in order to find the best way of desulfurization- physical, chemical, and biological. Whichever method(s) is found to be the most effective at removing sulfur from coal will be chosen. After this decision the group will move forward and design the process equipment; later an economic assessment will be done to cost the equipment. All of the group’s goals will be completed within this semester.

Show moreThe IPRO team was successful in designing a process that converts biomass into liquid fuels for transportation. The biomass chosen was cow manure because of two main reasons. The abundance of cows in southern Wisconsin provides an ideal place for the process to be built. Also, because most other types of potential biomasses currently have uses, manure was favorable. The process was split into three sections: gasification, gas clean-up and Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactor.

Show moreThe patron distribution functions (PDFs) describe the parton content of the proton. They cannot be calculated from the first principle and are to be determined empirically by fitting experimental observables to quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predictions. The HERAFitter project aims to provide a framework for QCD analyses of proton structure at leading order (LO), next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) orders in perturbative QCD. The framework includes various modules and interfaces enabling a large number of theoretical and methodological options. It also allows to study the impact of the new experimental data on the PDFs from ep, pp and pp̅ scattering processes. The fast development of the project involves active communication with theorists and experimentalist as well as a close collaboration with the main PDF fitting groups. Full information about the project, downloads and documentation can be found in http://herafitter.org.

Show moreThis EnPRO project is the first of several designed to position IIT for a competitive proposal entry in 2009 for the Solar Decathlon 2011 competition. The Solar Decathlon is a competition in which 20 teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. The Solar Decathlon is also an event to which the public is invited to observe the powerful combination of solar energy, energy efficiency, and the best in home design. This year the event will take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. October 12 - 20. The team houses are open for touring everyday except Wednesday, October 17, when they will close for competition purposes. An overall winner is announced on Friday, October 19 at 2 p.m. Teams of college students design a solar house, knowing from the outset that it must be powered entirely by the sun. In a quest to stretch every last watt of electricity that's generated by the solar panels on their roofs, the students absorb the lesson that energy is a precious commodity. They strive to innovate, using high-tech materials and design elements in ingenious ways. Along the way, the students learn how to raise funds and communicate about team activities. They collect supplies and talk to contractors. They build their solar houses, learning as they go. The 20 teams transport their solar houses to the competition site on the National Mall and virtually rebuild them in the solar village. Teams assemble their houses, and then the active phase of the Solar Decathlon begins with an opening ceremony for students, media, and invited guests. The teams compete in contests, and even though this part of the Solar Decathlon gets the most attention, the students really win the competition through the many months of fundraising, planning, designing, analyzing, redesigning, and finally building and improving their homes. The public is invited to tour the solar homes and event exhibits during much of the competition.

Show moreMany people around the world are in need of orthotic and/or prosthetic care due to pathologies that cannot be effectively treated any other way. There is a great need for establishing and sustaining educational opportunities. Our IPRO focuses on the population of South America, and more specifically Colombia. Our goal is to provide them with educational information to support their existing Orthotic and Prosthetic (O&P) Technician training program at Centro don Bosco in Bogotá. We will continue the work of previous IPROs by creating modules that concentrate on O&P solutions to pathologies that occur on different areas of the body, specifically upper limb, spine, and lower limb. This semester we will also test the effectiveness of our educational modules by using the modules exclusively to fabricate an actual orthotic device. Our modules will also be translated to Spanish for the audience in Colombia.
