Show moreThe Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) has been projected to be the fuel cell of choice for future automotive applications. Among the challenging aspects of this application is maintaining highly efficient operation of the fuel cell. The key component of the PEMFC, the Nafion Membrane, can reach two critical states: drying and flooding. In drying, high resistance prevents normal operation of the fuel cell. In flooding, reactants are prevented from reaching reaction sites and there is a reduction of performance of the fuel cell. To address the first point, a spatially distributed along the plane membrane model was developed and tested with proportional-integral control of voltage and temperature. To analyze the occurrence of severe and frequent changes in power demand, a model aimed at mimicking the load expected in a fuel cell vehicle, including a DC motor, DC-DC converters and a rechargeable battery for peak-shaving and regenerative braking was developed. The model includes rotational and translational inertia as well as a simple wind resistance model for a vehicle. In contrast to simple lab-focused loads where load impendence is directly manipulated, the manipulated variable within this load is the DC-DC converter gain. Based on this model a control system architecture was developed consisting of a number of low level regulatory loops, a power distributor for peak-shaving and finally a high level loop for tracking vehicle speed. After understanding the load demands to a fuel cell vehicle with only a battery, the issue of multiple energy storage technologies is addressed. Designing a vehicle with these technologies poses an optimization problem. A high-level model of a fuel cell vehicle with two storage technologies, a battery and super-capacitor was developed. The model accounted for the constraints of each component and a drive cycle characterized the power demand. An economic-based optimization problem xv was posed whereas its objective was to minimize the capital cost of the system, while meeting power demand and keeping the technologies within their constraints. The result of the optimization provided a controller from which a high-level power coordination unit can be developed for the fuel cell vehicle.

Show moreThe Swyne Project‟s objective is to extend the capabilities of the semantic search engine developed in the previous semester of this particular IPRO project. Proposed extensions include the ability to search for “entities” (e.g., people) and their relationships to other entities in a fact database and implementing user interface support for the extensions. Another goal of the Swyne Project is to work on our collective soft skills. These include, but are not limited to, interpersonal communications, presentations, management functions, and time management. These skills are all critical to not only a successful project, but also a successful career outside of college. Our search engine will hopefully be an inspiration to others who are interested in working on a semantic search engine in the future and expanding upon our results.

Show moreFor years, the IPRO Program at IIT has been forced to operate wherever space can be found. Often, facilities are not equipped for the needs of the program. It has become necessary to find a way to give the IPRO Program its own dedicated space. If we give the program its own space, then what is needed in that space? What needs to be done with it? What types of spaces are necessary? What technologies will be used? IPRO 301 exists to answer these questions. We will provide ideas to IIT that can solve these problems. ii

Show moreOur purpose is to seek a union between living comfortably and living sustainably at an affordable price. Our design, for the community of Evanston, will first minimizes its energy consumption and then uses the most sustainable methods to fulfill the remaining needs of the inhabitants. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living. This community will also serve as an example to Chicago-area municipalities about the benefits of affordable sustainable planning, design, and living. It will also be an attractive marketable solution to the current home buyers within our given demographic.

Show moreIPRO 303 is working on the user interface for SmartSignal Corporation’s software which predicts equipment failures in coal fired power plants. We are now in the third stage of the project. We are to deliver the user interface of the software based on the studies done by two previous semesters. SmartSignal suggested that we also consider specific elements of the software such as the clear presentation of developing fault information, and the efficient communication system between users. An appropriate UI will utilize SmartSignal’s predictive analysis software to provide an efficient and clear means for power plant personnel to: · Predict or identify equipment faults · Understand the predicted faults · Prioritize the disposition of the predicted faults or highlight urgent or important faults · Reduce the need for plant personnel to have many years of experience or “institutional knowledge” The ultimate goal of this project is to introduce an innovative approach to the user interface which SmartSignal can use for predicting equipment failures in coal fire power plants. To realize this, we set these objectives. · Research and collect information relative to the User Interfaces [UI] from the first hand users of the software while examining the study done by the previous IPRO303. · Create the Requirements Document for the UI in light of the concerns expressed by SmartSignal and the results of research. · Generate several possible UIs based upon the Requirements Document stated above. · Select one of the Several UI for development of details and revise it based upon the input from SmartSignal. · Add details and finalize the design of the selected UI.

Show moreThis is the second phase of this project as a continuation of Spring 2008 IPRO 317 and will have a focus for Summer 2008 on the computer program, the user interface, as well as completion of the first geographic area of the scale model. The objective of this project is to design and construct a 3-D scale model for the first portion of downtown Chicago (downtown Chicago has been subdivided into 6 portions). The model will be used to simulate and test the effectiveness of fire defense strategies to address fire or other catastrophes related to public health and safety. This model will include streets, buildings and detailed information that help the Chicago Fire Department in planning interventions, considering various scenarios and case studies. The model is being built in phases, with the overall design incorporating a sophisticated, computer-driven illumination scheme built within the model base. The model thus will be able to display animated scenarios of virtually any depth and focus, by means of time-varying color and brightness. CAD Computer-generated images and laser-cutting methods are the main techniques used to design and build the model, but hand craftsmanship is also necessary. The completed model will be fully modular, designed to transport easily to various facilities. The usefulness of the model thus will extend to many needs of the Chicago Fire Department and City of Chicago, as an educational tool within the department and for community outreach. Possible additional uses for the model will be wind tunnel measurement of pressure distributions to inform building design and City infrastructure needs, as well as the study of urban microclimates and the impact on building energy demand. There is also the potential for this model and its design approach to inform the development of scale models to depict the venues associated with the proposed 2016 Olympics along the Chicago lakefront. This project will include: (1) Identification of the scale, materials, technologies, and strategies for construction; (2) Physical mapping and computer modeling of the downtown built environment; (3) Design of the physical model and computer/electronic components; and (4) Construction of a reduced-area mock-up for final review and approval by the City of Chicago.

Show moreIPRO 330 has one clear and main purpose: to increase high school student interest in Science and Mathematics in Chicago Public Schools. This is a very lofty and broad goal, so IPRO 330 has chosen to use the Chicago Public School Science Fair program as a vehicle to achieve this purpose. IPRO 330 is a continuing IPRO, meaning that we have a foundation and a base of work that has already been accomplished. As a result, one of the project goals of this team will be to obtain in-depth feedback from professionals within IIT, from Chicago Public Schools, and certainly from other professional education venues as well. Specifically, we will be looking to obtain feedback from the three most involved sources in high school students’ lives: students, teachers, and parents. This may be the most vital part of our project, because we want to make sure that our projects and guides are of high quality and high interest to high school students. IPRO 330 has an existing bank of Science Fair projects and guides which are located on the website sciencefair.math.iit.edu. In an effort to make our website more effective and more appealing, we will have team goals to create more Science Fair projects, and guides which will target areas that Chicago Public High School Students typically have trouble addressing, such as data analysis. We feel like the guides are a way to really implement more mathematics into the Science Fair program as a whole. In addition, there will be a group of students in our IPRO focused on improving the website and implementing new projects. IPRO 330 will address these objectives by first having all members, including faculty advisors, attend and judge a Chicago Public School Science Fair. This will allow everyone working on this project to get a better sense of what we are working on, make some contacts with teachers and Science Fair Coordinators, and even get feedback from students who used the website as a resource for their project. After this initial phase, the group will break up into three teams, an infrastructure team, a communication team, and a project and guides team. In these sub teams, IPRO 330 will be able to more effectively deal with more specific issues that arise
