Show moreThe IPRO 336 team is working with National Pasteurized Eggs, Inc. to create and test a new marketing strategy for the Davidson’s brand pasteurized eggs. Pasteurized eggs are a reasonably new product in the egg industry and, as of yet, have not gained a large percentage of retail market sales. Pasteurized eggs are comparable in many aspects to their competitors but offer the added advantage of being virtually bacteria and salmonella free. Due to this fact, Davidson’s eggs have grown exponentially in the food service market, especially for hospitals and other locations catering to at-risk groups. The company is now seeking to expand in the retail market and is looking to revise their current marketing strategy to meet this goal, with the help of the IPRO team. After an initial review, the IPRO group split up into sub-groups that will focus on different aspects of the marketing plan, including Consumer Education/Psychology, Competitor Analysis, Display, Packaging/Labeling, Promotions, and Website Improvements. Through both secondary and primary research (in the form of consumer surveys), these groups will gain an understanding of the egg market, the average egg buyer, and how the marketing strategy can be most efficiently revised. Once the research has been completed, the sub-groups will be able to create a design or marketing technique in their area of improvement, test their ideas, and revise as necessary. The IPRO group is seeking a final product that will boost retail sales of Davidson’s pasteurized egg and increase consumer awareness of the large benefits of such a product.

Two available technologies that provide distributed computing are Microsoft’s .NET and Sun’s J2EE. The objective of this Interprofessional Project is threefold: 1) to study both technologies, 2) to develop and analyze a list of criteria that are important to Bank One and how they develop software, and 3) to rate each criteria, which will help Bank One make an informed technology choice between .NET and J2EE, when reengineering legacy systems. At a high level, there are significant differences between these technologies. The .NET environment offers a host of programming languages and an integrated development environment. However, applications developed in .NET are limited to running on a Microsoft Operating System. J2EE offers one language, Java, but a wide selection of development tools. Applications developed in J2EE may run on several different operating systems. Bank One will have both .NET and J2EE available for development and by using Web Services they will be able to have separate modules communicate with each other.

Show moreMeasurements of three-dimensional correlation functions of like-sign low transverse momentum kaon pairs from Au+Au collisions at top RHIC energy √sNN =200 GeV are presented. The extracted kaon source function is narrower than the pion one and does not have the long tail along the pair transverse momentum direction. This indicates a much smaller role of long-lived resonance decays and/or of the emission duration on kaon emission. Three-dimensional Gaussian shape of the kaon source function can be adequately reproduced by Therminator simulations with resonance contributions taken into account. Comparison to pion data at the same energy reveals that the kaon Gaussian radii in the outward and sideward directions scale with the transverse mass mT. In the longitudinal direction, unlike at lower SPS energies, the Gaussian radii do not seem to follow the exact mT scaling between kaons and pions.

Show moreIn an age where sustainability and “going green” have reached an all time high in both the media, and in politics, new initiatives are being explored more than ever before. Many of these initiatives would require drastic changes both in the way corporations do business, and in the way average citizens live their lives. However, there are initiatives which require very little change in lifestyle and business practice, and potentially represent great savings to those who choose to implement them. Like its predecessors, IPRO 346 aims to raise public awareness of the recycling and reuse of condensate produced by air-conditioning systems. This condensate is a byproduct of all AC units, and is currently sent straight to the sewer. Studies conducted by previous IPROs have not only indicated great potential for this initiative, but have also shown a great deal of public interest. Unfortunately, they have also revealed government policies and city codes which greatly restrict the use of this abundant resource. The aim of IPRO 346 is to work towards a change in these policies through the demonstration of a viable system. Members of the team equipped with a model of the systems we propose will meet with public officials, and others interested in the system, demonstrating its potential in hopes of getting policies in place which would allow such a system to be implemented. The IPRO has two main objectives: the development of a prototype and model for demonstration, and the marketing of the idea through the use of both social networks, and presentations to anyone interested. It is the aim of this team, that the accomplishment of these goals will result in both public demand for AC condensate recycling systems, and public policies which allow their use.

Show moreDuring the fall 2009 semester, IPRO 358 plans to continue the development and creation of mock-ups for the Delta Hook Technology (DHT) as well as lay the foundation for a business model for Sparrowhawk, LLC, an early stage company. Sparrowhawk has investigated the concept for an innovative fishing hook that is not currently on the market or ready to be launched. The members of IPRO 358 will work together to design mock-ups of the DHT, test the mock-ups, and determine measures that can be taken to improve the DHT. Subsequent mock-ups will continue to improve based on results of the product testing. Simultaneously, we will be working towards better understanding the consumer’s behavior. Show moreIPRO 330 has one clear and main purpose: to increase high school student interest in Science and Mathematics in Chicago Public Schools. This is a very lofty and broad goal, so IPRO 330 has chosen to use the Chicago Public School Science Fair program as a vehicle to achieve this purpose. IPRO 330 is a continuing IPRO, meaning that we have a foundation and a base of work that has already been accomplished. As a result, one of the project goals of this team will be to obtain in-depth feedback from professionals within IIT, from Chicago Public Schools, and certainly from other professional education venues as well. Specifically, we will be looking to obtain feedback from the three most involved sources in high school students’ lives: students, teachers, and parents. This may be the most vital part of our project, because we want to make sure that our projects and guides are of high quality and high interest to high school students. IPRO 330 has an existing bank of Science Fair projects and guides which are located on the website sciencefair.math.iit.edu. In an effort to make our website more effective and more appealing, we will have team goals to create more Science Fair projects, and guides which will target areas that Chicago Public High School Students typically have trouble addressing, such as data analysis. We feel like the guides are a way to really implement more mathematics into the Science Fair program as a whole. In addition, there will be a group of students in our IPRO focused on improving the website and implementing new projects. IPRO 330 will address these objectives by first having all members, including faculty advisors, attend and judge a Chicago Public School Science Fair. This will allow everyone working on this project to get a better sense of what we are working on, make some contacts with teachers and Science Fair Coordinators, and even get feedback from students who used the website as a resource for their project. After this initial phase, the group will break up into three teams, an infrastructure team, a communication team, and a project and guides team. In these sub teams, IPRO 330 will be able to more effectively deal with more specific issues that arise

This is a first step toward implementing entirely synthetic organisms that can be designed to a specification. The target we have chosen is a synchronized biological oscillator, implemented in a vertebrate organism, the zebrafish. To produce an organism requires a wide variety of skills and tasks.
