Show moreThe IPRO team will investigate the general area of self-powered and mobile robots and create an action plan with recommendations for specific robotics-centered IPRO projects and other activities at IIT. It is critical that the team develop a common level of understanding and appreciation for project opportunities in robotics. This can be accomplished in several ways during the semester, through (1) a hands-on project experience, (2) review of the literature, (3) field trips to institutions that play a role in robotics research, design, development and marketing, (4) organization of an IIT special interest group (SIG) focused to topics in robotics, and (5) exploration of the opportunities for IIT to participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition. Professor Lykos will facilitate team discussions with other faculty at IIT who have expertise in various aspects of robotics. The extent to which the above five task opportunities are addressed is a function of the size of the team, level of experience of team members, and specific interests of team members. Students who have a background in robotics or are highly motivated to develop a deeper knowledge about robotics technology are strongly encouraged to contact Professor Lykos to discuss their role on the team and suggest areas of focus for the team's work before enrolling in this IPRO section.

Show moreThe aim of this IPRO was to assist our community partner the Save the Ramova Group, in developing new ideas for the renovation of the Ramova Theatre, which is located on the south side of the cross street of 35th and Halsted in Bridgeport. The theatre which has been around since the 1930’s has fallen into disrepair and has suffered a lot of damage over the years due to no maintenance and weathering through the seasons. The renovation of the theatre would not only mark the revival of a nostalgic memory but it would open up new avenues of development along the Halsted St. Corridor in addition to being a place that people in and around Bridgeport can go to for entertainment and leisure close to their homes. This semester the IPRO team started building a design initiative from scratch; by creating and handing out surveys to various groups of people, along with creating different studies in order to gain information on the needs and wants of the community along with the perspectives of the vast different groups of people in the neighbouring areas. After the data collection, it was analysed and as a result a preliminary program was drawn up by the group along with a cash flow report called a proforma that shows the feasibility of the project. In the following semesters the IPRO team should be able to develop the preliminary program into a sustainable design of the renovated theater as well as analyse the feasibility of the design and integrate the various building systems into the design in order to restore the Ramova to a fully working condition.

Show moreThe plan for this IPRO is to develop a design for a large scale parking garage that can accommodate about 500 cars. The objective of this project is to develop a design that goes beyond the standard parking systems used today. Rather, the attempt is to have a design which is more representative of “parking garages of future.” And as such, such features as quick handling of incoming and outgoing cars, efficiency in storage and aesthetics are considered in design. The building will be completely self-sufficient and will have to incorporate the architecture of the various buildings on campus. The design could have separate entrance and exit ramp towers, ramps incorporated with parking, or the futuristic design may be automated. An automated system will include a vehicle elevator of lift system to move the vehicle so the driver does not have to. The structure could be built with reinforced concrete or steel. The design will also include accessibility following the requirements set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Show moreOur team desires to create a plan that enables living in a sustainable manner at an affordable price. To do that, we are using a site in Evanston as the basis for a design that minimizes energy consumption while still being an attractive marketable solution to current home buyers within the city. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living and also serve as an example to Chicago-area municipalities about the benefits of affordable sustainable planning and design.

Show moreThe problem posed with blind and visually impaired (BVI) swimmers is one of safety and independence. BVI individuals need to be able to orientate themselves in a swimming pool and avoid obstructions like lane-lines, pool walls and other swimmers for a safe experience. Additionally, it is important to BVI swimmers to maintain their independence and maintain a low profile during this experience. The Buoy team will focus on the design, testing and implementation of assistive technology focused on a pool environment with continuous input and feedback from the BVI community. A current passive device created in previous IPROs will be field-tested in a BVI pool for the semester in order to identify failure-modes of the device and collect real-world BVI user feedback to discover areas for improvement. Additionally, two groups have been organized to assess the use of invisible-fence and ultrasound technology in the creation of new assistive technology. Surveys and interviews will be conducted with the BVI community on a continuous basis to ensure the Buoy team is meeting the needs of the market.

Show moreThe IPRO team was successful in designing a process that converts biomass into liquid fuels for transportation. The biomass chosen was cow manure because of two main reasons. The abundance of cows in southern Wisconsin provides an ideal place for the process to be built. Also, because most other types of potential biomasses currently have uses, manure was favorable. The process was split into three sections: gasification, gas clean-up and Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactor.
