Show moreThis paper provides a unique, detailed evaluation of the acoustics and aerodynamics of a rectangular multi-element supersonic jet mixer-ejector noise suppressor. The performance of such mixer-ejectors is important in aircraft engine applications for noise suppression and thrust augmentation. In contrast to most prior experimental studies on ejectors that reported either aerodynamic of acoustic data, the present work documents both types of data. Information on the mixing, pumping, ejector wall pressure distribution, thrust augmentation and noise suppression characteristics of four simple, multi-element, jet mixer-ejector configurations is presented. The four configurations included the effect of ejector area ratio (AR = ejector cross-sectional area/total primary nozzle area) and the effect of non-parallel ejector walls. The configuration that produced the best noise suppression characteristics has also been studied in detail. The present results show that ejector configurations that produced the maximum pumping (secondary (induced) flow normalized by the primary flow) also exhibited the lowest wall pressures in the inlet region, and the maximum thrust augmentation. When cases having the same total mass flow were compared, one found that noise suppression trends corresponded with those for pumping (per unit secondary area). Surprisingly, the mixing (quantified by the peak Mach number, and flow uniformity) at the ejector exit exhibited no relationship to the noise suppression at moderate primary jet fully expanded M-j (the Mach number that would have been attained under isentropic expansion). However, the noise suppression dependence on the mixing was apparent at M-j = 1.6. The above observations are justified by noting that the mixing at the ejector exit is not a strong factor in determining the radiated noise when noise produced internal to the ejector dominates the noise field outside the ejector. Show moreIPRO 340 (The Idea Fermentors) is working with Rock Bottom Brewery to determine alternative uses for the spent grain the brewery produces. Over 1,000 pounds of spent grain are produced at each of the three area locations weekly. Spent grain has many applications because of its high content of protein and fiber. Applications range from production of bio-plastics and bio-fuel, to agricultural uses as animal feed and compost material, to reuse as food for people. A major issue that Rock Bottom Brewery faces is that spent grain spoils very quickly, so alternative uses of spent grain must happen within a matter of days. IPRO 340 will determine what will be the best use of Rock Bottom Brewery’s spent grain in terms of logistics, cost, practicality, and environmental impact. The Idea Fermentors will lean and understand the brewery process and various applications for spent grain, as it pertains to Rock Bottom Brewery. The team will work together to accomplish project requirements as set forth by the IPRO office at IIT on time as well as satisfy the sponsor company’s needs.

Show moreThe effects of radio frequency electric field peaking in the earth formations surrounding a conductor excited by radio frequency energy in the controlled in situ heat processing of hydrocarbonaceous earth formations are mitigated by providing an inert buffer region around the conductor to which radio frequency electromagnetic energy is supplied to produce an electric field within the earth formations. A portion of the earth formations is removed to accommodate insertion of the conductor at a desired location in the earth formations and to provide a buffer region between the conductor and the surrounding earth formations. The conductor is supported at the desired location in spaced relationship to the surrounding earth formations, the buffer region encompassing the principal region of the electric field enhancement region around the conductor where the probability of breakdown in the earth formations over the period of application of the radio frequency energy would be above a tolerable level. The buffer region is filled with dielectric material having an electric field breakdown level greater than that of the surrounding earth formation medium such that the probability of breakdown in the buffer region over the period of application of the radio frequency energy is tolerable. Preferably the filler medium has a power dissipation characteristic less than that of the surrounding earth formations.

Show more1048 million gallons of water is used in Chicago everyday. Chicago replenishes almost none of it. Although there is no water shortage currently, many believe that water will be to the next century what oil is to this century: a huge commodity. Twenty percent of the world's potable water is contained in the Great Lakes. In order to be responsible consumers of this natural resource, Chicago is looking into different plans to return water to Lake Michigan. The purpose of Growing Water IPRO is to create a prototype of an Eco-boulevard on the IIT campus that will serve as an example of practices that could be implemented across the Chicago-land area to manage and naturally purify storm water and sewage water so it can be reintroduced to Lake Michigan. These Eco-boulevards will also serve as educational facilities to inform the community about the growing scarcity of water and how to conserve this precious resource.

Show moreThe intent of the IPRO 315 is to design a large-scale structure. The focus of this IPRO is structural analysis. The advisors of this group thought it would be even more interested if IPRO 335 and IPRO 315 would mesh together to create a large green structure. The intent of IPRO 335 is to design a “green” and innovative building using the skills and input of students studying different majors at Illinois Institute of Technology. Our team has decided to design a replacement apartment building for Gunsaulus Hall on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. Innovative technologies and practices will be researched and employed to design a “green” building. The decision to design a building for the IIT campus came about because it is an area that all of the team members could relate to and have a more realistic grasp on the project. For the remainder of the semester the two groups are planning on coordinating with each other on each step of the design process.

Show moreSynthetic biology is a relatively new approach to genetic research where the focus is to build a simple genetic system with known processes and test it in a biological setting. This is in contrast to the reductionist approach where a complex pre-existing biological system is analyzed in an attempt to discover the purpose of each of the parts. In this IPRO, a very simple genetic system is being designed, built, and tested in a biological setting. Previous semesters have already accomplished such in bacteria. This semester's focus will be on building the system designed last semester and inserting it into an eukaryotic organism; the zebrafish. The main purpose of this IPRO is to advance the knowledge of biological systems and their manipulation. This is being done through the design and creation of a simple, but novel, genetic circuit, and the introduction of this circuit into an organism to observe its properties in vivo. In order to accomplish this goal, we have split up into 4 different sub-teams: Fish, Math Modeling, Futures and Design, and Construction

Show moreThe IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester is to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research and for the space itself to be able to be as sustainable as possible throughout research this semester. Since the end goal is a rather ambitious one, a more realistic goal is to have an energy plan for following IPRO’s to work off of and to have the space cleared so that the developed plan can be tested. The team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable energy systems. For this fall semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Research office utilities that consume low amounts of energy, and investigate how to improve the efficiency of current utilities. Research and test various energy efficient lighting solutions. Research environmentally friendly floor, wall, and ceiling finishes along with necessary office furniture. Develop a website to display the development progress of the Zero-Energy Lab and provide information regarding “green technology” Clean and prepare the 6,000 ft2 space for future inhabitants. Using the research, develop a program proposal for the Zero-Energy Lab.
