Show moreTeam Vision/Mission The purpose of the IPRO 302 team, sponsored by Sargent & Lundy, is to evaluate the environmental and cost impacts of closing an ash pond at an active power plant, as well as consider alternative beneficial uses for coal combustion residuals (CCR) and wastewater that can contribute to a sustainable solution. Objectives ● Current status of regulations for CCR and wastewater ● Alternatives for disposing of ash ● A recommended alternative for disposal or reuse of the bottom ash ● A recommended alternative for treatment and disposal of wastewater ● Cost impact of closure of an existing unlined ash pond

Show moreUnder certain conditions, shock-containing jets produce an intense tone referred to as screech. Screech was discovered about half a century ago by Alan Powell in England. Here I recount developments in supersonic jet screech - from Powell's first observation in 1951 to now. During this period more than 200 papers have been published - many offering only incremental advances. This paper provides a concise screech resource including a historical perspective, a summary of recent developments and a critical assessment of the state of the art. Topics include modulation of instability waves by shocks, shock-cell models and screech frequency prediction models, unsteady shock motions and clues about their role in shock noise generation. also. detailed nearfield measurements and computer simulation methods now available are discussed. However, despite the advances, screech amplitude prediction remains an elusive but increasingly important goal not only due to concerns about sonic fatigue failure of aircraft structures but because knowledge gained by the study of screech can be applied to a variety of resonant flow situations, including jet impingement, cavity resonance, and closed-loop active flow control. Show moreVirtual sorbent bed systems and methods for receiving contaminants from a waste stream are presented. In an embodiment, the virtual sorbent bed system comprises an outlet for introducing into the gas stream a material capable of receiving contaminants, a first charged DC electrode oriented substantially peripheral to the gas stream and normal to the flow of the gas stream; a second charged DC electrode oriented substantially peripheral to the gas stream and normal to the flow of the gas stream, wherein the first DC charged electrode and the second charged DC electrode cooperatively generate a first electric field that imparts a drift velocity to the material; and a plurality of charged AC electrodes oriented substantially peripheral to the gas stream and normal to the flow of the gas stream, wherein the charged AC electrodes generates a second electric field that imparts additional three-dimensional motion to the material.

Show moreNAVTEQ, the sponsor of this project, is one of the largest digital mapping companies in the world. They are in a constant phase of self-improvement. Right now, NAVTEQ’s focus is on how to make their technology more pedestrian and community friendly. Our project has two main sections – 1. Target the majority of mobile device users, and give them an outlet to report any changes, mistakes or developments that have been overlooked by NAVTEQ. 2. Come up with a solution which enables the average map user – men and women ages 18-35, students and tourists – to address these alterations in a simple, hassle free way

Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities and grounds. Three major spaces currently hold latent potential at the school: the abandoned convent/dormitory, library and inner courtyards, used correctly they can become a catalyst for positive change. It is proposed that the dormitory be torn down, in its place a “community center” would be constructed. The space will service extracurricular activities at the school, public outreach programs (i.e. youth groups, cub/girl scouts, etc.), club rooms and a new space for library books storage and usage. The second space being addressed is the library, given its current isolated position the space would be transformed into a communication and media center equipped with the technology necessary for worldwide communication. The third space addressed is the inner courtyards of the building. With six dispersed throughout the school grounds, they can become an active part of the recreational aspect of the school’s environment: places of social interaction, outdoor classrooms, etc. Additionally, the greening techniques proposed for the school’s facilities will include methods for efficiency improvement, education and school promotion.

Show moreThe scope of I-Pro 335 is both a conclusion to unfinished work from the previous two semesters along with new projects that will start and end this semester. Work to be concluded and closed-out from last semester: Final LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) documentation and identification of individuals that might be part of a LEED team should the school desire to pursue that route. Final design of Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.) elements including a re-design of the elevator, and approval by the client. Using the Code of Ethics written last semester as a base line, the code will be rewritten to strengthen its objective to provide guidance for the I-Pro. New projects to begin and completed this semester are: The roof re-design- Green roof options. This may also include storm water retention and grey water recycling systems, as well as any updates to the buildings primary plumbing systems. Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) - Lab hoods, air conditioning load calculations and Hydronic Heating. Electrical systems design- Illumination calculations and design, Alarm systems, and ‘Off-heating’ load calculations from equipment to be housed in Alumni Memorial Hall (A.M.H.). Construction schedule. Cost estimate.

Show moreThe primary purpose of the Interprofessional Project (IPRO) 330 team is to promote the study of mathematics and the sciences amongst Chicago Public School (CPS) students. We intend to achieve this goal primarily by enhancing the website sciencefair.math.iit.edu and by interacting directly with CPS students, educators, and administrators. The website, entitled Science Fair Extravaganza, is already fully functional thanks to the efforts of previous IPRO 330 groups. Our team aims to further improve and publicize this website. To improve the website we will be addressing suggestions given by CPS teachers and students as well as outside education professionals in an effort to provide a high quality and useful project. The success of our IPRO will be assessed by increasing the number of daily hits received by Science Fair Extravaganza and by positive direct interaction with CPS students.

Show more1048 million gallons of water is used in Chicago everyday. Chicago replenishes almost none of it. Although there is no water shortage currently, many believe that water will be to the next century what oil is to this century: a huge commodity. Twenty percent of the world's potable water is contained in the Great Lakes. In order to be responsible consumers of this natural resource, Chicago is looking into different plans to return water to Lake Michigan. The purpose of Growing Water IPRO is to create a prototype of an Eco-boulevard on the IIT campus that will serve as an example of practices that could be implemented across the Chicago-land area to manage and naturally purify storm water and sewage water so it can be reintroduced to Lake Michigan. These Eco-boulevards will also serve as educational facilities to inform the community about the growing scarcity of water and how to conserve this precious resource.

Show moreIPRO 324, Disaster Recovery: Do-It-Yourself Home Building, is focused on designing a building manual to aid disaster victims in building new buildings. The objectives of this group are to continue the efforts made from the previous semester. This includes the creation of a manual illustrating how to build the design, design for handicap accessibility as a provision to the current design, to market this manual to a disaster relief organization that would be responsible for the distribution, to find a new client who would be interested in having this project built, and to find funding in order to build the design. Over the course of this semester, the team will be focusing on creating the manual and attempting to build the design at a site either in New Harmony, Louisana or Gulfport, Mississippi where potential clients are. The house at a bare minimum consists of a multipurpose room, a kitchen, and a bathroom; and will cost approximately $17,000. This is an affordable home/structure considering the cost of building a house now. The team is aware that some families are not fortunate enough to have a savings of $20,000 when these unexpected disasters occur. For this reason, it is an objective of the team to obtain funding.
