Show moreNature is a major source of inspiration for drug design. Bacteria are developing resistance towards conventional antibiotics. Utilizing antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) – an essential component of innate immune system, as therapeutic agents, may be a viable alternative. Unfortunately, there are a number of serious hurdles on the way towards clinical application of AMPs, including their low bioavailability, costly manufacturing process and toxicity against host cells. To address this issues, current research is focused on the design of synthetic compounds mimicking natural peptides, among which oligo(Nsubstituted glycines), or peptoids, have shown great promise. Antimicrobial drug efficacy is defined by how it interacts with the membrane of invading pathogen. The physicochemical characteristics of peptoid molecule play a crucial role in these interactions, yet their detailed structure-activity relationships remain obscure. Herein, we have demonstrated that conformational flexibility, cationic charge or hydrophobicity, are critical for oligomeric peptoids to permeate bacterial cell membranes. The outer surface of membrane was modeled by Langmuir monolayers of desired lipid composition and subjected to the constant-pressure insertion assays, epifluorescence microscopy (EFM), synchrotron X-ray reflectivity (XR) and grazing incident-angle X-ray diffraction (GIXD). Our results shed light on the critical details in peptoid mode of action. We believe this will aid in the rational design and of novel anti-infective drugs. Additionally, we have applied our experimental system to model the processes occurring at the air-water interface in lungs. Alveoli are coated by a complex lipidprotein mixture referred to as pulmonary surfactant. This facilitates respiration and prevents alveolar collapse. Patients with respiratory distress receive surfactant replacement therapy that often has the serious drawbacks. X-ray scattering data shows that the structural organization of adsorbed films correlates with surfactant delivery methods onto the respiratory surface. We anticipate that our findings will contribute to the development of novel clinical approaches for treating respiratory diseases.

Show moreBlood is a multiphase mixture of liquid plasma and solid blood cells. The primary objective of this thesis is to numerically model the motion of red blood cells and platelets in blood vessels using kinetic theory based multiphase flow transport phenomena. Many experimental observations over the years have concluded that the concentration of platelets and red blood cells vary across the radius of the blood vessel. It has been shown that shear drives the platelets towards the wall, while the red blood cells move towards the center of the blood vessel. Other studies have observed that the platelet adhesion at the walls of the vessel is strongly dependent on the wall shear rate and the concentration of red blood cells. Platelet adhesion to the walls of the vessel has been explained by various shear induced diffusion models over the past few years. The diffusion models are heavily dependent on empirical relations which do not fully explain the phenomena behind the migration. In this study we postulate the dependence of red blood cell concentration on the migration of platelets using kinetic theory. The experimentally measured motion of platelets to the wall and red blood cells to the center is explained by unequal granular temperature kinetic theory. The migration of platelets in the presence of red blood cells is caused by the high granular pressure produced by the random oscillations of the red blood cells and the dissipation of platelet random energy at the walls. At the wall the shear has the highest value. This produces a high granular pressure and temperature which drive the red blood cells towards the center. An analytical solution for the platelet concentration was derived.

Show moreChamberlain is interested in exploring new devices that can enhance the functionality of its garage door operator systems. Residential garage door operators currently utilize an IR emitter and detector pair to identify the presence of an object breaking the "beam". This sensor is used to reduce the risk of a moving garage door striking an object in its path. The IPRO team will investigate the use of an inexpensive CCD camera to replace, and potentially expand, this functionality. The scope of this project will include but not necessarily be limited to: (a) understanding regulatory requirements for devices currently used on operators, and attempting to anticipate how current requirements will be interpreted and or modified to cover this new sensor, (b) identifying optical and electronic requirements to meet anticipated regulatory requirements, (c) examining current patents for devices utilizing similar technology, (d) developing a single sample device optimized for minimum development time and (e) estimating the projected cost for this system, when optimized for functionality, cost and produceability.

Show moreThis IPRO is being run as part of the IIT Information Retrieval Lab. This is one of the only labs in the country dedciated to next generation search engines. Team members will learn all about search engines and will help build one different from existing search engines. Current web search engines only search unstructured data (web documents). A lot of data is available that is structured (weather, census, sports, etc.). A search engine that could search both structured data and text would be able to answer questions such as "show me the top three restaurants in Chicago" without simply looking for the word "three." Previous IPRO teams have been building a Java-based metasearch engine. Numerous issues have arisen. How do we identify which data source will be best for the query? What is the best user interface for the system? For Spring 2002, the team will extend the search engine to include more sources. The team could really use the talents of non-computer science students to help test the system and improve the user interface.

Show moreHybrid electric vehicles (HEV) combine the internal combustion engine (ICE) of a conventional vehicle with the battery and electric motor of an electric vehicle. Hybrid electric propulsion, currently available in a limited selection of automobiles, improves fuel economy while enhancing torque when acceleration is required. In a parallel hybrid, onboard computers control the utilization of the ICE and electric motor, by selecting one or both power sources to drive the vehicle. A battery delivers power to the electric motor and is recharged by a generator driven by the ICE and by regenerative braking. This IPRO will seek to obtain similar benefits for a bicycle equipped with an electric motor and rechargeable battery, by substituting the cyclist in place of the hybrid electric's ICE. Regenerative braking and downhill pedaling will be investigated to recharge the battery. The intent of this IPRO is to create an understanding and interest in HEVs.This is the second offering of this IPRO. This term we continue our study and construction of a lightweight bicycle, exploring front and/or rear motors, using a lithium-ion battery that is currently being built to our specifications. Working with Dr. Emadi, the IPRO group may design and build appropriate power electronics to support motor drive as well as regenerative braking. A future project might explore the combination of ultra capacitors, for energy storage, and a fuelcell, to produce energy for propulsion.

Show moreThe Community Energy Cooperative is sponsoring a product development effort to create high performance window awnings. The overall objective is to develop a simple, low-cost easy-to-install, effective and pleasing exterior window solar control. Available products that reduce window solar heat gain range from reflective shades to new windows with low-emittance glass. In some cases, such as reflective film directly applied to glass, a 70 percent reduction in solar heat is possible. In general, however, no current product meets the full range of desired objectives. Objectives of a new awning design include: (1) inexpensive; (2) preserve window egress and ventilation functions; (3) permanently installed; (3) substantial cooling load reduction; (4) does not reduce solar heat in winter; (5) enhances daylight brightness, distribution within room and light quality; (6) minimal reduction in view; and (7) little (or favorable) influence on building appearance. A general concept for a new type of window solar control product has been envisioned by the Community Energy Cooperative. It is the purpose of the IPRO team over a two-semester period to refine the design concept, fabricate a prototype, demonstrate its effectiveness, assure its cost effectiveness and plan for its commercialization. The sequence of work will include literature search, modeling, design, building a prototype, and other activities leading to a production franchise agreement. Additional project tasks would include computer-simulation and field measurement of air conditioning and lighting performance change associated with awnings. This Project will add to the body of scholarly work on building energy performance and windows. The Community Energy Cooperative will make available various resources, including focus groups and contacts with product users, software and locations for test installations. The project will establish a format for community-based energy efforts that partner with colleges and universities.

Show moreThe student run radio station continues in an expansion mode as the second IPRO is formed. The station now known as WIIT (88.9 FM) would like to expand its broadcast schedule to 24/7. The project team will suggest what type of programming and how to market the station to the students and surrounding communities. The research on programming has been completed and requires an operations plan. One project will address how to attract students to fill on the air positions. The marketing section last semester developed a package for underwriters that would enable the station to attract underwriters. Other projects concern increased coverage, and purchase of new equipment The project will be managed as an educational station by developing more viable radio station activities to offer students real experience in putting a five phase goal oriented project together to increase awareness and listenernship of the station. Another project will be to have the radio station offer mentorship opportunities for local high school students interested in radio. The strategic plan will serve the university and the surrounding area.
