Show moreThe teams’ task is to demonstrate the interdisciplinary cooperative requirements as needed to fulfill a mission of sustainability. This IPRO simulates an actual building development within the Chicago City limits. Specifically a green building development, which means that there is an increase in efficiency of the resources used while the building is constructed, operative, and removed.

Show moreAccelPharma intends to enable pharmaceutical and biotech companies to reintroduce withdrawn drugs to the market place through the development, validation, and deployment of personalized medicine models. It differentiates itself by being one of the only companies to correlate side effects of drugs to certain genetic mutations for a broad range of effects. AccelPharma expects to break even and begin to achieve positive revenues after only the second sale.

Show moreThe primary focus of this project is to help blind and visually impaired individuals to swim independently. The team will be divided into two sub-teams. One sub-team will create a passive device, which uses a mechanical device to provide tactile feedback to the swimmer. The other sub-team will create an active device which uses special electronic devices such as a sonar based device to help guide the swimmer. These devices will be repeatedly tested and updated to help increase the independence of blind and visually impaired individuals exercise and further improve their quality of life.

Show morePublic officials’ communication has been explored at length in terms of how such their statements are conveyed in the traditional media, but minimal research has been done to examine their communication via social media. This paper explores the kinds of statements U.S. officials are making on Twitter in terms of the actions they are trying to achieve. We then analyze the correlation between these statements, Congressional communication network structures, and voting behavior. Our analysis leverages over 29,000 tweets by members of Congress in conjunction with existing DW-NOMINATE voting behavior data. We find that pro-social and self-promoting statements correlate with Congressional voting records but that position within the Congressional communication network does not correlate with voting behavior.

Show moreThe Fall 2008 semester of IPRO 303 will investigate and analyze the economic and technical details of the wind-turbine electricity generation industry. The IPRO 303 team will be focusing on the impact of equipment failures that lead to downtime and maintenance associated with the failures. A comparison of current industry practices in dealing with these problems, along with a detailed economic analysis of the true costs involved, will be the major goal. A final report of the findings and conclusions of the IPRO 303 team will be provided to our sponsor, SmartSignal Inc. It is understood that this Project Plan will change as the term progresses and more information becomes available.

Show moreDue to errors on construction sites it is not uncommon for underground utilities to be struck accidentally while digging. Aside from the obvious monetary damages a significant number of people have died as a result of these types of accidents. The purpose of this EnPRO is to aid workers when they are in danger of striking an underground utility by successfully developing a software product that displays subterranean utilities to the workers. The end result being that the number of accidents decreases, saving both lives and money.

Show moreIPRO 329, Edutainment, has the distinct goal of creating a simulated training program for nuclear health technicians. This program will provide an interactive environment in which to practice the skills necessary to pass the certification test. It focuses on the oral exam portion of this exam where the technician will be presented with a scenario designed to test his problem solving and reasoning skills while applying the general knowledge of radiation health standards required for his profession.

Show morePotential power plant sites can become more difficult to determine if water is not available in great quantity. This is true in western states where it may be scarce and competed for by other industries as well as households. The aim of this project is to find an economical, as well as environmentally friendly way to recover water from the flue gas, which is produced when powder-river-basin (PRB) coal is burned in a 750 MW power plant.

Show moreVery little unbiased information is available to the general public about energy needs, concerns, and sources. The philosophy behind IPRO 332 is that people should be sufficiently educated about their own energy choices to be able think critically about the corresponding consequences. This IPRO team will build on the work underway since Spring 2007 in developing effective methods for educating high school students about energy and sustainability, expanding our outreach to junior high school students. In addition, the team will: (1) Construct a Teaching Kit to extend the reach of the program beyond the Chicago metropolitan area to provide educators with the materials they will need to present the modules on their own and tailor it to their classrooms; (2) Complete the full-scale launch of the organization’s website, www.howmanyearths.com, to enrich the learning experience, provide a professional contact interface and build a community of engaged teachers and students; (3) Execute a formal marketing plan to build awareness of our efforts, establish our brand image, promote our work, and greatly increase visibility; and (4) Pursue grants and funding with the goal of establishing a viable, long-term, not-for-profit organization.

Show moreDynamic models of high temperature short time (HTST) pasteurization systems can be developed by using empirical model development paradigms such as transfer functions and times series models. Properly designed experiments that excite all output variables provide good data that enable the development of accurate dynamic models. These models are used in feedback control and statistical process monitoring system design. The methodology for time series model development for HTST pasteurization processes is illustrated by using data collected from a pilot scale HTST pasteurization system.

Show moreThe teams purpose is to seek a union between living comfortably and living sustainably. To design for a future Chicago‐area community, which first minimizes its energy consumption and then uses the most sustainable methods to fulfill the remaining needs of the inhabitants. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living. This community will also serve as an example to Chicago‐area municipalities about the benefits of sustainable planning, design, and living.

Show moreChicago is the third largest intermodal freight hub in the world. As a result, there is need for efficient routing of trains throughout the Chicago area. One aspect of railroad transport that directly affects the overall efficiency of the rail system is how easily accessible train intermodal yards are for trucks going to and through the intermodal yards. With this in mind, the overall purpose and objective of IPRO 307 is to improve the truck flow in and around an intermodal facility at Harvey, IL which is owned by Canadian National (CN) lines. CN is one of the six major railroads that serve the Chicago area. The intermodal facility at Harvey is surrounded by a network of highways including Interstates 80, 57, 294, 94 and 65. Interstates 294 and 80 cross directly overhead of the intermodal yard. In order to make truck flow around the intermodal yard more efficient, IPRO 307 will look into the addition of ramps and frontage roads, including a ramp that would be based off of interstates 80/294. A ramp connecting the major interstate to the intermodal facility would allow for easier access to the intermodal facility by trucks, thereby bettering the efficiency of the intermodal facility as a whole.
