Show moreIPRO 303 is working on the user interface for SmartSignal Corporation’s software which predicts equipment failures in coal fired power plants. We are now in the third stage of the project. We are to deliver the user interface of the software based on the studies done by two previous semesters. SmartSignal suggested that we also consider specific elements of the software such as the clear presentation of developing fault information, and the efficient communication system between users. An appropriate UI will utilize SmartSignal’s predictive analysis software to provide an efficient and clear means for power plant personnel to: · Predict or identify equipment faults · Understand the predicted faults · Prioritize the disposition of the predicted faults or highlight urgent or important faults · Reduce the need for plant personnel to have many years of experience or “institutional knowledge” The ultimate goal of this project is to introduce an innovative approach to the user interface which SmartSignal can use for predicting equipment failures in coal fire power plants. To realize this, we set these objectives. · Research and collect information relative to the User Interfaces [UI] from the first hand users of the software while examining the study done by the previous IPRO303. · Create the Requirements Document for the UI in light of the concerns expressed by SmartSignal and the results of research. · Generate several possible UIs based upon the Requirements Document stated above. · Select one of the Several UI for development of details and revise it based upon the input from SmartSignal. · Add details and finalize the design of the selected UI.

Show moreThe overall conflict that IPRO 313 is trying to resolve is the dependency on oil as a fuel source for automotive vehicles. Along with the global and financial concerns that go along with oil as a fuel source, there has been growing interest in electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are the competitive issue that IPRO 313 has researched, investigated, and is working to resolve. Currently, most electric vehicles run on lithium batteries. The problems associated with these vehicles are the recharge time and service station compatibilities. The most popular electric vehicle is the Testla Roadster, which has a driving distance of approximately 270 miles per full charge. Although this is an adequate driving distance, it takes six to eight hours for a full charge. This amount of charge time is a vital drawback for electric vehicles. The vast majority of service stations are not electric vehicle friendly. Gas stations do not and have not set up areas for electric battery pack replacement, or vehicle charge. Withou

Show moreCurrent web search engines only search unstructured data (web documents). A lot of data is available that is structured (weather, census, sports, etc.). A search engine that could search both structured data and text would be able to answer questions such as "show me the top three restaurants in Chicago" without simply looking for the word "three." Previous IPRO teams have been building a Java-based metasearch engine. Numerous issues have arisen. How do we identify which data source will be best for the query? What is the best user interface for the system? For Fall 2001, the team will extend the search engine to include more sources. The team could really use the talents of non-computer science students to help test the system and improve the user interface. Students should plan to work on this at least ten hours a week - anything less will result in a poor grade for the IPRO. Students for this IPRO are graded heavily based on the success of the team, not just individual performance. Weekly progress reports are required.

Secondary Objectives The secondary objectives are necessary for accomplishing the primary objective. To ensure that the program will be accredited, many guidelines must be followed; these guidelines have set the secondary objectives as follows: • Develop several educational modules concerning common diseases and their orthotic treatments • Develop several low-cost demonstrations and hand-outs to compliment the educational modules • Carefully follow ISPO requirements to ensure accreditation • Translate all material to Spanish for use in Latin America • Develop a three day short course to be presented at a Prosthetics and Orthotics conference at Bogotá, Colombia in May 2007 • Work with educators in Colombia to develop a program similar to IPRO 309

Show moreThe Swyne Project‟s objective is to extend the capabilities of the semantic search engine developed in the previous semester of this particular IPRO project. Proposed extensions include the ability to search for “entities” (e.g., people) and their relationships to other entities in a fact database and implementing user interface support for the extensions. Another goal of the Swyne Project is to work on our collective soft skills. These include, but are not limited to, interpersonal communications, presentations, management functions, and time management. These skills are all critical to not only a successful project, but also a successful career outside of college. Our search engine will hopefully be an inspiration to others who are interested in working on a semantic search engine in the future and expanding upon our results.

Show moreLocated in Elmhurst, Illinois, The Chamberlain Group, Inc. is the world'slargest manufacturer of residential garage door openers and commercial andgate operators for use on cars, boats and planes. Chamberlain leads the industry in product innovation and quality, and is the low-cost producer. At this time, through its Advanced Development group, Chamberlain is interested in exploring new devices that can enhance the functionality of its garage door operator systems. Residential garage door operators currently utilize an IR emitter and detector pair to identify the presence of an object breaking the "beam". This sensor is used to reduce the risk of a moving garage door striking an object in its path. The IPRO team will investigate the use of an inexpensive CCD camera to replace, and potentially expand, this functionality. The scope of this project will include but not necessarily be limited to: (a) understanding regulatory requirements for devices currently used on operators, and attempting to anticipate how current requirements will be interpreted and or modified to cover this new sensor, (b) identifying optical and electronic requirements to meet anticipated regulatory requirements, (c) examining current patents for devices utilizing similar technology, (d) developing a single sample device optimized for minimum development time and (e) estimating the projected cost for this system, when optimized for functionality, cost and produceability.

It has become necessary to find a way to give the IPRO Program its own dedicated space. If we give the program its own space, then what is needed in that space? What needs to be done with it? What types of spaces are necessary? What technologies will be used? IPRO 301 exists to answer these questions. We will provide ideas to IIT that can solve these problems. ii

Our design, for the community of Evanston, will first minimizes its energy consumption and then uses the most sustainable methods to fulfill the remaining needs of the inhabitants. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living. This community will also serve as an example to Chicago-area municipalities about the benefits of affordable sustainable planning, design, and living. It will also be an attractive marketable solution to the current home buyers within our given demographic.
