Show moreSpring semester 2007, the Manhattan Group came to IIT seeking advice regarding the improvement of their paper shredder. The paper shredders are manufactured in China and sold across the world, including the United States, under the Royal brand name. Each year, over a million paper shredders are sold. Consumers want paper shredders that are quiet and long lasting and are available at the lowest possible price. The Manhattan Group has asked us once again, the students of IPRO 321 and Professor Maurer, for the fourth straight semester to seek potential methods and problems in their shredder. These include improving the sound reduction, the gear optimization, and other features. The MMAE lab and machine lab will be used extensively for gear, sound, and material testing and design. Software resources, sound measuring equipment, and EE equipment will be used as well. Potential legal and/or ethical issues will involve patents and idea ownership. Since this a sponsored IPRO, all discoveries will be property of Mr. Seth Lewis and the Manhattan Group. This potentially could be an issue where this IPRO will be unable to provide necessary information to the IPRO office regarding work and progress due to ethics.

Show moreThe use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance as well as in search and rescue is rapidly expanding in both civilian and military applications at an unprecedented rate which was not foreseen a decade ago. Accordingly, there are significant job opportunities in this field and it is expected that this will continue to grow in the next decade. However, the design of UAS is truly an interdisciplinary task as it requires an excellent team work with expertise in diverse areas ranging from aircraft design to autonomous flight, video and data transmission to visual object recognition, the operation of ground station such as real time data analysis and antenna tracking as well as legal/policy aspects of UAS flight operations.

Show moreThe Diferential Functioning of Items and Tests (DFIT) framework is a widely used test of di erential functioning. DFIT uses the Item Parameter Replication (IPR) algorithm to generate statistical cuto s, which relies on several simpli cations have not been formally tested. This study examines these assumptions by comparing the IPR algorithm with an extended, unsimpli ed procedure intended to represent results observed in practice. Monte Carlo simulation was used to compare cuto s between the two methods under a number of conditions. Di erences between the IPR and extended cuto s indicate that Type I error rates are conservative at the test level and in ated at the item level. Mean group di erences resulted in massive in ation. Sample size and test length had only minor inuences on error rates.

Show moreA method and apparatus are provided for distinguishing microscopic size, elongated fiber-like particles from cubically shaped, irregularly shaped, or spherically shaped particles in a mixture suspended in an electrically conducting liquid medium and for counting the fiber-like particles. In accordance with the method, an electrical zone sensing apparatus is provided with a screen means having microscopic openings therein of predetermined size to filter from the suspension particles having an effective area larger than the size of screen openings. Particles passing through the screen and through the sensing aperture of the zone sensing apparatus are separately sized by volume characteristics of electrical signals generated. The electrical signals having predetermined volume characteristics associated with the maximum spherical particles for passing through the screen openings are counted as non-fiber particles; whereas signals having larger volume characteristics are separately counted and designated as fibers. By the use of screens of successively smaller sizes, the larger particles including fibers having larger transverse cross sections may be successively filtered from the suspension and from reaching the sensing aperture. Therefore, smaller fibers having smaller cross-sectional area may be distinguished from particles having diameters approximating that of the smaller screen size openings.

Show moreThere exists a strong demand for orthotics and prosthetics (O & P) in Latin America, with approximately 2.5 million people in need of this type of care. IPRO 309 was started in the spring of 2006 with the goal of helping to make this type of care more readily available. However, there are only 50 certified, and 1500 uncertified, O & P practitioners in Latin America. In order to become a certified practitioner, a student must graduate from an ISPO accredited program. Unfortunately, there is currently only one ISPO accredited program in existence in Latin America, along with several other programs that are not ISPO accredited. In October of 2004, Centro Don Bosco (Bogotá, Colombia), Don Bosco University (San Salvador, El Salvador), and the Laboratorio Gilete (Bogotá, Colombia) signed an agreement to establish the first accredited O & P education program in Colombia. Since then, Centro Don Bosco has allotted 3,500 square feet of space for the thriving faculty, classrooms, manufacturing training, and vocational workspace that are necessary for an ISPO accredited program. There are three levels of accreditation according to ISPO standards. Category III involves the design and manufacturing of orthotic and prosthetic devices, Category II includes the fabrication of the devices as well as direct patient care, and Category I includes production, treatment for patients, and research and development. The equivalent to ISPO in the United States is the American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC). Because it is independent from the ISPO, the ABC standards of accreditation will need to be taken into account in order to carefully cross cultural and national boundaries.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to investigate the potential effects of technology and personality on training using a computer based learning environment designed to improve learning through technology-delivered instruction. Data were collected from a sample of undergraduate students (N = 98), recruited from three universities (two in the US and one in Canada), who participated in both experimental days. Condition had no effect on learning outcomes, while Conscientiousness was found to be significantly correlated with academic performance. In further analyzing the relationship between personality and learning outcomes across time using a latent growth curve model results showed non-significant conclusions for the direction of the relationship for each of the Big Five. Discussion of the results and implications for practice and future research are provided. In conclusion, this study provides a basis for considering personality characteristics when designing computer-based training interventions in organizational settings.
