Show moreThe following are our objectives for the Fall 2008 semester: • Re-evaluate and update the calculations done by the previous IPRO group for theoretical energy content at each stage of the process. • Develop a flow scheme for a small scale cogeneration plant using solid biomass fuel from corn stover. • Research current equipment capacities and methods of heat transfer which could be used to implement a small scale cogeneration power plant. • Construct as economic analysis. • Deliver a final report that describes the overall energy yields, feasibility and economic analyses and possibly some recommendations for a large scale project.

Show moreHeusler compounds are of great interest for their properties such as shape memory, thermoelectric, ferromagnetic and spin polarization effects that could lead to new mechanical and electronic devices. Currently, the study of Heusler alloys is focused on their electronic and magnetic properties, but the high temperature thermodynamic properties of these compounds have not been covered as much. A thorough knowledge of the thermodynamic properties and phase equilibria is required for developing this kind of alloys. This thesis is part of a systematic investigation of the thermodynamics and phase equilibria of ternary Heusler alloy systems. In this work, the high temperature reaction calorimeter was used to obtain the standard enthalpy of formation of compounds in the Ni2XSn (X = Ti, Zr, Hf, V and Nb) and Ni2TiX (X = Ga and In) ternary systems. It was confirmed the compound Ni2TaSn does not exist in the Heusler structure A Setaram Ligne 96 drop calorimeter was used to measure the heat content of Ni2TiSn as a function of temperature. Phase equilibria and crystal structures of Ni2TiSn, Ni2TiGa and Ni2TiIn were determined using XRD, SEM and EDS.

Initially, our efforts have been devoted to developing a device that will allow such individuals to swim independently which from a sighted person‟s perspective might not be perceived as an issue. From research we have found this not to be the case, for the visually impaired it‟s very difficult to swim without causing harm to themselves. With our product eyeSwim, we hope to improve the quality of life for visually impaired individuals by providing them with opportunity to exercise safely. Currently, eyeCan is in the process of researching other activities i.e. running, biking, climbing which may prove to be another opportunity for expanding the business‟ focus.

Show moreThe IPRO 347 team is being sponsored by Abrasive Form to lead the company into a paperless form of tracking projects. Abrasive Form currently uses a paper folder, which they call the “job folder” to hold all the important documents for completing incoming projects. This job folder travels along with the pieces of the project until the project is completed. Once a project has been completed, and the final product is shipped out, the job folder for that project is then kept in an on-site filling cabinet. So far this has led to several problems for Abrasive Form. As the company is increasing in size and completing increasing amounts of projects, they have had to dedicate a large portion of their offices to the storing of old job files. Abrasive Form keeps all of their completed job folders to ensure that all liability for the company is covered, and whenever necessary throughout the lifespan of completed projects in the field, Abrasive Form is able to prove that their work was of the quality that was requested. This has also lead to a lot of time being wasted by the employees of Abrasive Form traveling to the back offices where the job folders are held to look up information. The IPRO 347 team will be helping Abrasive Form come up with a solution to this very serious problem. The solution generated thus far is to scan all the documents contained within the paper job folders into PDF form, and use a digital filing program (such as Bugzilla which is a free open source program) to organize the PDF files into sub folders, and allow for quick referencing based on critical criteria such as the job number, part number, customer name, or part number. All this information would then be contained in a single server that can be accessed on any computer throughout the company through an internal network.

Show moreIn the 21st century, medical technology is advancing at a rapid rate, thus allowing people to benefit from new treatments being developed. However, much of the underserved and underinsured public are not benefiting from the breakthroughs as one might expect. In order for the existing facilities to better serve the public, gradual transformations and upgrades must be made. This is the challenge being tackled by our IPRO: How can we realistically suggest a renovation model for existing Access Community Health Network facilities which would promote cost efficiency and technological advancement in both environmental and operational capacities? - The primary objective of this session of IPRO 340 is to deliver a five-year model for which existing Access Community Healthcare facilities can be shaped into more environmentally and operationally efficient centers for medical treatment. - In designing such a model, secondary goals include familiarization with cutting edge medical technology, modernized building flow, spatial relations, as well as the development of business process models. In addition, we plan to investigate ways in which Access Community Healthcare can enhance the level of patient experience by making peoples’ visit to their facilities more enjoyable and informative.

Show moreThe scope of this project is to present a variety of solutions, determining and defining a system required to implement a digital façade for the new Hype Park Art Center. The pioneering icon for the Hyde Park Art Center will engage neighbors and those who pass by, in addition to ideally attracting visitors from all over Chicago and beyond. The projection area will be the Art Center’s signature while serving many exhibition and studio needs by bringing art directly into the view of the community it serves. The idea is that the art created because of this façade will be a signature as well. Because of this, the façade system itself needs to accommodate many different digital art mediums to function as a blank canvas with opportunity for a creative manipulation by artists, visitors, and the Hyde Park Art Center to the full capabilities of the technology.

We plan to create a business model of a consulting firm that seeks out clients, as well as having clients brought to the firm, realize their needs, create a design document of their proposed website, then seek out the students with the capabilities matching the clients needs and “hire” them for the job, all the while maintaining that the quality of the student’s work will be sufficient to the client and therefore sufficient for our consulting firm. The start up companies/clients we gain will receive knowledge, expertise, and fresh ideas for a much needed website for their company/project. On the other hand the students will receive real-life experience working for a client in a certain timetable, with a standardized set of guidelines while also receiving some form of compensation.

This educational module will be broken down into two major components. First, the Zoo education staff and animal researchers need help in developing a guided inquiry process that will assist users in identifying animals. Show moreWe would like to develop a system that measures the applied torque at a bicycle crank set. In contrast to current solutions, we want to be able to retrofit our system to existing crank sets, obviating the need to abandon parts that the bicyclist already owns. In principle, according to preliminary tests performed at the MMAE department, this can be done using sets of quite inexpensive strain gauges. However, being able to get accurate torque measurements will require some advanced signal processing from the strain gauges. These signals can then be transmitted wirelessly to a bicycle computer like the Edge 705 that the global positioning system corporation Garmin released last year. There is a defined wireless protocol, called ANT+Sport, which has been developed specifically for the purpose of transmitting exercise data, such as power output or heart rate, to small computers. Chipsets and development kits for this protocol are also available commercially. Therefore, our task will be to find an optimal configuration of strain gauges that will be attached to the crank set, and to develop an algorithm to process the strain gauge data in order to isolate a signal that is proportional to the applied torque. This signal will then be transmitted to the bicycle computer for display and storage.

Power measurements are important to such training, however existing power meters are expensive and the cyclist must replace existing crank sets. There are a number of approaches that will be taken to design and complete the website, from a technical point of view, which include beta testing and finalizing the code and functional sections. Show moreThe goal of IPRO 348 is to first find a use for the condensate produced by air conditioners, and then to create a product that will recycle the condensate for said use. The first task for IPRO 348 is to collect information on how condensate is formed, its purity, and the amount that is produced by a central air conditioning system. The end goal of the IPRO is to have a marketable system that will collect and store the condensate produced by the air conditioning units and will then proceed to use the condensate in the form of cleaning water, irrigation water, and possibly various plumbing purposes such as flushing toilets. After creating a viable product, the IPRO team is determined to make the product scalable, expanding its market from residential to commercial industries. To fulfill this goal, the IPRO team has been broken down into subgroups which are each responsible for a different objective. The first subgroup is responsible for the creation of a device that will allow for the condensate to be collected and stored. The second subgroup is responsible for analyzing the collected sample’s composition and checking for bacterial growth. The third subgroup is responsible for setting the parameters and methods for condensate collection. The fourth subgroup is responsible for obtaining the condensate samples from various sites, as well as collecting environmental data. The fifth subgroup is responsible for beginning the marketing aspects of the project. As a whole, the IPRO team will determine how the project should progress.
