Show moreGraphics Processing Units (GPUs) once served a limited function for rending of graphics. With technological advances, these devices gained new purposes beyond graphics. Most modern GPUs have exposed their APIs to allow processing of data beyond the display, thus leading to a revolution in computing where instructions and intensive tasks can be offloaded to these now General Purpose Graphical Processing Units (GPGPUs). Many compute and memory intensive tasks have utilized GPGPUs for acceleration and these devices are especially prevalent in the financial, pharmaceutical and automotive industries. As computing resources have increased exponentially, memory resources have not and now create a limiting factor known as the memory wall. GPUs have been designed as an application specific processing unit for the streaming data access patterns found in graphical applications. They are successful at their original purpose, but when extended to general purpose problems, they meet the same memory wall data access problem as their CPU counterparts; they can be more susceptible to the effects latency due to the locality and concurrency of instructions beside data. This thesis reviews the current GPGPU landscape, including the design of current scheduling systems, GPGPU architecture, as well as a way of computing and describing the memory access penalty with Concurrent Average Memory Access Time (C-AMAT). We will also demonstrate the current GPGPU landscape, including design of schedulers, simulators as well as how Concurrent Average Memory Access Time (C-AMAT) can be computed. We have devised a solution to manipulate the number of scheduled thread groups to allow a GPGPU’s processing units to match their current memory states defined by C-AMAT. Our solution results in the increase in IPC, the reduction in C-AMAT and decrease in memory misses. The solution also has different effects on different types of computing problems, with highest improvements achieved in compute intensive memory patterns with as much as a 12% improvement in the instructions per cycle and a 14% reduction in C-AMAT.

Show moreThe objective of IPRO 305 is to understand the usage of deep-rooted as well as emerging applications and trends that will drive internet usage over the next 3 to 5 years. These need to be personified in terms of various classes of users that will co-exist and the potential use by each. In a little over a decade, the internet has become a part of everyday life. What started with simple applications such as email, has expanded to providing Blogs, Social Networking Sites, streaming video content, low cost (sometimes fee) international calls and has evolved into massive e-commerce engine. {There will remain users who use the internet for simple tasks as email, while others will use it to get all their multi-media content and blogs with multitude of opportunities to monetize the same. } The overall increase in consumption (MB) as well as the need for ever-increasing speeds (Mbps) may require ISPs to embrace technologies beyond what is currently envisioned as the industry evolves from broadband technologies to wideband technologies. This change in the environment needs to be evaluated from the view of an ISP/ content provider like a cable company and the new technologies and capabilities it needs to embrace to ensure relevance in the ever-changing world.

Show more This project is sponsored by the Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago, Illinois). The Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) contacted Illinois Institute of Technology’s Interprofessional Projects program about enlisting a student team to develop content for its website (http://www.msichicago.org) over the course of two semesters (Fall 2007 and Spring 2008). The team has been tasked with further developing three interactive modules for the website. These modules are intended to raise scientific inquiry and support pre-existing scientific knowledge. There are three major areas of concentration for each group. Programmers, designers and content managers will aid in the development of each module. Programmers will need a proficient understanding of Flash, and the ability to utilize a mysquel and database and code in .NETcoding. Designers will be responsible for creating educationally accurate and visually appealing images. Content mangers will be required to relay clear and concise content that reflects age-appropriate and scientifically accurate curricula. MSI is currently developing a more modern and interactive website. The IPRO team will aid the museum by adding Flash modules to further interactivity. MSI provided the team with examples of successful preexisting scientific websites. These include: the Exploratorium (http://www.exploratorium.edu) and the Franklin Institute (http://www.fi.edu). These websites, and others, have been evaluated by the IPRO team and judged by their success in qualitative learning. The museum's goal is to incorporate emerging technologies, ultimately transforming the “brochure like” website into a more engaging attraction for potential museum visitors. Finalized developed modules will be incorporated into MSI's website re-launch in 2008.
