The overall goal of our IPRO team is to create a curriculum and a program that helps all practitioners and employees better understand how to utilize and build upon their knowledge and talents in the medical work setting. This will be achieved by promoting the awareness of treatments available, organizing demonstrations and lectures to help educate others, developing a course load for an accredited student. By achieving the aforementioned, our IPRO team hopes to increase the availably of funding to help create public awareness as well as to increase the quality and durability of the products we produce. In addition, we hope to expand on the QR Code invented by the Japanese. With this invention, we hope to develop a low cost solution for developing nations to be able to have quick and easy access to maintenance instructions, use instructions, and contact information of medical professionals. With the QR Code, we hope that potential problems will be able to be solved on site, wherever one may be.

Along with the global and financial concerns that go along with oil as a fuel source, there has been growing interest in electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are the competitive issue that IPRO 313 has researched, investigated, and is working to resolve. Currently, most electric vehicles run on lithium batteries. The problems associated with these vehicles are the recharge time and service station compatibilities. The most popular electric vehicle is the Testla Roadster, which has a driving distance of approximately 270 miles per full charge. Although this is an adequate driving distance, it takes six to eight hours for a full charge. This amount of charge time is a vital drawback for electric vehicles. Show moreIPRO 340 (The Idea Fermentors) is working with Rock Bottom Brewery to determine alternative uses for the spent grain the brewery produces. Over 1,000 pounds of spent grain are produced at each of the three area locations weekly. Spent grain has many applications because of its high content of protein and fiber. Applications range from production of bio-plastics and bio-fuel, to agricultural uses as animal feed and compost material, to reuse as food for people. A major issue that Rock Bottom Brewery faces is that spent grain spoils very quickly, so alternative uses of spent grain must happen within a matter of days. IPRO 340 will determine what will be the best use of Rock Bottom Brewery’s spent grain in terms of logistics, cost, practicality, and environmental impact. The Idea Fermentors will lean and understand the brewery process and various applications for spent grain, as it pertains to Rock Bottom Brewery. The team will work together to accomplish project requirements as set forth by the IPRO office at IIT on time as well as satisfy the sponsor company’s needs.

Show moreThe goal of this project is to assist our client, the Lugenia Burns Hope Center, expand an already-established parents organization serving seven of Bronzeville's public schools: Doolittle West, Dootlittle East, Raymond, Abbot, Donahue, Wells-Prep, and Mayo. This organization P.O.W.E.R. for our kids (Parents Organization Working for Educational Responsibility for our kids)--is an independent network of parents and community organizers working in concert with the Local School Councils to improve student achievement and educational opportunity. Our team will create promotional literature advertising the cause of the union, research the problems in the schools, and propose changes to the curriculum and the culture of the schools, which members of POWER and the local school councils can implement. This project gives students in the Leadership Academy an introduction to grass-roots, community organizing. Students involved with Math/Science education and the Young Women's Charter School might join the team to advise our client on best classroom practices. Students of public policy, law, political science, and architecture would be challenged to place the problems of the schools within the context of city, state, and federal policies on education, housing, land-use and other aspects related to the vitality of healthy neighborhoods. Should students of psychology join the project, they might help the team understand those aspects of human motivation and behavior required for building of human capital in low income communities. And, of course, students of technical communication, design, and internet communications, finally, would not only be valuable additions to the team because of their interests in web site and document design, but because of their interests in constructing persuasive texts. In general, students with an interest in making a difference in the surrounding, IIT community would have an opportunity to work with community leaders who likewise want to see Bronzeville's public schools better serve their children.

After this first objective, we take 2 paths. The first leads to determining a screening criterion to select the best industrial prospects. We then plan to quantify the value propositions for the prospects selected from objective 2. Show moreFabrication Laboratories, or Fab Labs, were started as a community outreach program by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology providing digital fabrication tools for rapid prototyping to the general public. The Museum of Science and Industry has partnered with IPRO to further develop the Fab Lab at their site. IPRO 333 has been rendered the task of working with the administration in the Fab lab of MSI to design methodologies for furthering the use of the laboratory and assisting in determining its end goals for both the museum and the community by working with the lab directors to broaden the possible uses of the lab, promoting membership at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, and involving the community in science and technology programs at the museum. In order to accomplish our tasks we have broken into three main teams, each of which will focus on a different aspect of the lab. The first team will be responsible for creating events specific to the museum members, creating proposals for low‐cost, high‐profit activities for the lab, and possibly creating a website where users of the lab may sign up for time in the lab, reserve or order materials, and rent storage space for long term projects they wish to work on. The second team is responsible for integrating the Fab Lab into the current working exhibits as well as future exhibitions. The third team will be responsible for designing and creating new programs for users of the Fab Lab, such as the students enrolled in the Science Achievers program or museum members.

Sparrowhawk has investigated the concept for an innovative fishing hook that is not currently on the market or ready to be launched. The IPRO team will work together to approach the process of designing mock-ups of the Delta Hook Technology (DHT), testing the mock-ups, and determining measures that can be taken to improve the DHT. Show moreHuman norovirus (HuNoV) is considered an important cause of foodborne outbreaks, often attributed to the preparation of fresh produce by infected food handlers. In this investigation, methods for recovery of murine norovirus (MNV-1), a surrogate for HuNoV, from food preparatory surfaces were optimized, and MNV-1 crosscontamination between various surfaces common in a food service setting were studied. Fifty microliters of MNV-1 was inoculated onto demarcated 1 x 1 inch squares of polypropylene cutting board, stainless steel knife and spigots. After drying, MNV-1 was recovered from each surface using either a cotton swab, composite tissue or sterile sponge in combination with different eluents such as tissue culture growth medium, 3% beef extract, glycine buffer (50mM glycine, 1% beef extract), stripping solution (0.04% K2HPO4, 1.01% Na2HPO4, 0.1% Triton X-100), and Earle’s Balanced Salt Solution (EBSS). The eluent/recovery tool combinations that recovered the highest percentage of MNV-1 from cutting board were stripping solution/sponge (20%) and growth medium/swab (20%). The greatest recovery from the knife blade was achieved with the growth medium/composite tissue combination (43%), while recovery from spigots was greatest using the stripping solution/sponge (28%) and the growth medium/sponge combinations (27%). In the second phase of this investigation, human volunteers were asked to perform various tasks in order to quantify the amount of MNV-1 cross contamination between various surfaces, including bare hands, fresh-cut lettuce, and spigots. The percentage of MNV-1 transfer from hands to spigots varied from 0.06% to 3.59%, spigots to hands varied from 10% to 90.4% and lettuce to hands varied from 0.30% to 4.33%. x The results of this investigation can be used in developing a model describing the transfer pattern of HuNoV between surfaces common in retail food service, and used in developing educational materials for food service workers.

Show moreWe would like to develop a system that measures the applied torque at a bicycle crank set. In contrast to current solutions, we want to be able to retrofit our system to existing crank sets, obviating the need to abandon parts that the bicyclist already owns. In principle, according to preliminary tests performed at the MMAE department, this can be done using sets of quite inexpensive strain gauges. However, being able to get accurate torque measurements will require some advanced signal processing from the strain gauges. These signals can then be transmitted wirelessly to a bicycle computer like the Edge 705 that the global positioning system corporation Garmin released last year. There is a defined wireless protocol, called ANT+Sport, which has been developed specifically for the purpose of transmitting exercise data, such as power output or heart rate, to small computers. Chipsets and development kits for this protocol are also available commercially. Therefore, our task will be to find an optimal configuration of strain gauges that will be attached to the crank set, and to develop an algorithm to process the strain gauge data in order to isolate a signal that is proportional to the applied torque. This signal will then be transmitted to the bicycle computer for display and storage.
