Show moreCoal city is a small town in Illinois that has partnered with IIT. Its current population is 5,152 people and has been steadily increasing. Coal City is located just south of I-80 along the I- 55 corridor and less than an hour from Bolingbrook and Oakbrook. Along the northern border of Coal city, are adjoining lakes and abandoned coal mines. Small town atmosphere is conducive to community interaction and pride. The purpose of this project was to provide the framework for creating the most feasible and sustainable economic development model for the village of Coal City using generalized approaches that could be emulated in other small towns. the objectives that the team has set are: Gather information that will lead to the creation of an effective plan. Study models and components of Sustainable Economic Development focusing on small towns and rural areas. Study the demographics, human systems, existing industry systems, bio-physical systems, government and social policy systems and the existing industry clusters. Understand community, local, and regional assets and talent pool, town vision, mission and economic development plans.

Show moreThe IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester is to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research and for the space itself to be able to be as sustainable as possible throughout research this semester. Since the end goal is a rather ambitious one, a more realistic goal is to have an energy plan for following IPRO’s to work off of and to have the space cleared so that the developed plan can be tested. The team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable energy systems. For this fall semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Research office utilities that consume low amounts of energy, and investigate how to improve the efficiency of current utilities. Research and test various energy efficient lighting solutions. Research environmentally friendly floor, wall, and ceiling finishes along with necessary office furniture. Develop a website to display the development progress of the Zero-Energy Lab and provide information regarding “green technology” Clean and prepare the 6,000 ft2 space for future inhabitants. Using the research, develop a program proposal for the Zero-Energy Lab.

Show moreCAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart) are used to prevent automated access to sensitive information online. In its usual format, users are presented with distorted text and asked to enter the displayed text in an answer box. If successful, humans, but not computers, will be able to interpret the distorted text. Another format of CAPTCHAs asks users to identify audio information (usually a string of digits or phrase of words) that has been distorted or placed against a background of noise (\white" noise, reversed speech, etc.). Users type the words they hear into an answer box. The audio format is intended to be accessible to blind and low-vision users who cannot use the visually-based format. Unfortunately, audio CAPTCHAs are di cult for humans to use (Bigham and Cavendar 2009) but relatively easy for computers to solve (Tam et al. 2008), which is exactly the opposite outcome desired. To take two extreme examples, in one recent study (Sauer et al. 2008), users were able to solve only 46 percent of audio CAPTCHAs, while in another study (Burztein and Bethard 2009), a computer program was able to break 75 percent of audio CAPTCHAs. At issue is whether audio CAPTCHAs can be designed so that users can easily solve them but computers cannot. Yan and Ahmad (2008) propose testing di erent kinds of background noise to determine which is the most e ective at blocking computers but admitting humans. To this end, Tam et al. (2008) suggest using other human voices as background noise (to thwart computers) but familiar phrases as the string to decode (to aid listeners). The current project will focus on selecting from a set of potential solutions to test.

Show moreThe primary focus of this project is to help blind and visually impaired individuals to swim independently. The team will be divided into two sub-teams. One sub-team will create a passive device, which uses a mechanical device to provide tactile feedback to the swimmer. The other sub-team will create an active device which uses special electronic devices such as a sonar based device to help guide the swimmer. These devices will be repeatedly tested and updated to help increase the independence of blind and visually impaired individuals exercise and further improve their quality of life.

Problems with systems currently available are: some products are not compatible with all bike systems causing the need to purchase new parts, the cost of the available products is expensive, and some of the available IPRO 324 Project Plan Page: 4 measuring systems are not very accurate. In order to achieve our goals and to improve the current technology, our IPRO is divided into two groups: the mechanical and the electrical team.

Show moreThe main problem the IPRO addressed was that of insider misuse. Contrary to popular belief, the largest threat facing companies on a technology level is not intrusion, but rather insider misuse. Insider misuse is a relatively new area of research in the field of Computer Science, which is one of the reasons it’s a relatively unheard of problem. In addition to that, due to intense media bias towards intrusion, people are blissfully unaware of the problem of insider misuse. Ethically, it’s an interesting problem. Companies already closely monitor user activity, but any infringement on perceived privacy in the workplace generally sends everyone flustering left and right. The IPRO had to personally evaluate if we felt the necessary invasion of privacy was worth the overall result which is a more secure and profitable business. Companies can decide which approach they would like to take, but it’s hard to believe that a company would choose one that wouldn’t help to prevent a loss of money.

Show moreIndia’s huge and growing population is putting severe strain on all of the country’s natural resources. Most water sources are used on a domestic, industrial and agricultural basis. The quality of the water used is presumed to be the major problem that the people face, but the real problem is the quantity of water supplied. Quite a few organizations have been engaged with supplying drinking water to the community, but still not enough to address the needs of all the different sectors of the community, especially irrigation. In order to increase the availability of water to the people, it is necessary that the people have alternative means of supply of water, and a strong sense of the value of water.

The overall goal of our IPRO team is to create a curriculum and a program that helps all practitioners and employees better understand how to utilize and build upon their knowledge and talents in the medical work setting. This will be achieved by promoting the awareness of treatments available, organizing demonstrations and lectures to help educate others, developing a course load for an accredited student. By achieving the aforementioned, our IPRO team hopes to increase the availably of funding to help create public awareness as well as to increase the quality and durability of the products we produce. In addition, we hope to expand on the QR Code invented by the Japanese. With this invention, we hope to develop a low cost solution for developing nations to be able to have quick and easy access to maintenance instructions, use instructions, and contact information of medical professionals. With the QR Code, we hope that potential problems will be able to be solved on site, wherever one may be.

Show moreA method for detecting an image of an object by measuring the intensity at a plurality of positions of a transmitted beam of x-ray radiation emitted from the object as a function of angle within the transmitted beam. The intensity measurements of the transmitted beam are obtained by a crystal analyzer positioned at a plurality of angular positions. The plurality of intensity measurements are used to determine the angular intensity spectrum of the transmitted beam. One or more parameters, such as an attenuation property, a refraction property and a scatter property, can be obtained from the angular intensity spectrum and used to display an image of the object.
