Show moreWe would like to develop a system that measures the applied torque at a bicycle crank set. In contrast to current solutions, we want to be able to retrofit our system to existing crank sets, obviating the need to abandon parts that the bicyclist already owns. In principle, according to preliminary tests performed at the MMAE department, this can be done using sets of quite inexpensive strain gauges. However, being able to get accurate torque measurements will require some advanced signal processing from the strain gauges. These signals can then be transmitted wirelessly to a bicycle computer like the Edge 705 that the global positioning system corporation Garmin released last year. There is a defined wireless protocol, called ANT+Sport, which has been developed specifically for the purpose of transmitting exercise data, such as power output or heart rate, to small computers. Chipsets and development kits for this protocol are also available commercially. Therefore, our task will be to find an optimal configuration of strain gauges that will be attached to the crank set, and to develop an algorithm to process the strain gauge data in order to isolate a signal that is proportional to the applied torque. This signal will then be transmitted to the bicycle computer for display and storage.

The philosophy behind IPRO 332 is that people should be sufficiently educated about their own energy choices to be able think critically about the corresponding consequences. This IPRO team will build on the work underway since Spring 2007 in developing effective methods for educating high school students about energy and sustainability, expanding our outreach to junior high school students. In addition, the team will: (1) Construct a Teaching Kit to extend the reach of the program beyond the Chicago metropolitan area to provide educators with the materials they will need to present the modules on their own and tailor it to their classrooms; (2) Complete the full-scale launch of the organization’s website, www.howmanyearths.com, to enrich the learning experience, provide a professional contact interface and build a community of engaged teachers and students; (3) Execute a formal marketing plan to build awareness of our efforts, establish our brand image, promote our work, and greatly increase visibility; and (4) Pursue grants and funding with the goal of establishing a viable, long-term, not-for-profit organization.

Through an impressive and beneficial advancement, the program has successfully carried on to the spring 2005 semester. The goals of the program remain simply a quest to advance the art of robotics in the IIT community. The stage has been aptly set by previous IPROS for higher and more substantial progression on this cause. The goals of the IPRO Spring 2005 team will be to create four prototypes of not merely user friendly robots but a sophisticated utilitarian bunch that would gain enough attention in support of the ultimate cause of the introduction of a robotics course. The Peppy, Roomba, Darpa and the Pyro are the four prototypes set for construction this semester.

Show moreThe first objective of IPRO 341 is to research four areas in which nanotechnology is being applied. Through this research the team will gain a basic understanding of the workings behind nanotechnology and determine applications which may interest our target audience (see second objective). The second objective of IPRO 341 is to determine a target audience. Since this semester’s team will focus on public assessment and education, a target audience must be chosen to present our research findings to. The third objective of IPRO 341 is to assess the current level of knowledge which the target audience has pertaining to nanotechnology. By determining what the audience already knows about the subject the team can organize and present the necessary information. The fourth objective of IPRO 341 is to educate our target audience. Public education of nanotechnology and its applications is the mission of this IPRO team. All previous objectives are part of this encompassing goal of public education. The team will work on putting together a tool for public education which can be used by the target audience to gain knowledge on the subject of nanotechnology. The team also plans to spread interest of the tool so that it may be used to educate the public.

The Museum of Science and Industry has partnered with this IPRO to further develop the Fab Lab at their site. IPRO 333 currently works with the administration in the Fab lab of MSI to design materials and activities for increasing the use of the laboratory. The same project from last semester, the New United Center, will be analyzed, explored, and redesigned in detail to meet new requirements. Show moreThe goal of this project is to develop algorithms to be used in a virtual simulation of a garage door’s operation and to construct a working prototype that functions in the Thermotron environmental test chamber in The Chamberlain Group, Inc. facility in Elmhurst in order to collect data under a range of temperatures and humidity as well as a range of loading conditions. Her passion for educating young people led her to develop a series of books that would be both educational and enjoyable. She is also a frequent visitor to schools, conducting "Meet the Author Day", where she speaks to both students and teachers about realizing their dreams. Angela's mission is to provide young children with books and toys that will enhance their learning and broaden their thinking. To that end, she has developed a concept for a line of learning doll called Tummi Pals. Angela has researched the market and has not found a doll with the attributes of Tummi Pal. The goal of this project is to devise an effective means by which a cutting insert breakage event can be quickly and reliably detected, thereby minimizing damage to the steel and other cutting inserts, and also freeing technicians to attend multiple machines at a time. This increases the productivity of their operations, and it has the potential to save A. Finkl & Sons substantial costs per year in time lost in rework and prematurely broken cutting inserts.

Show moreThe first objective of IPRO 341 is to develop a hypothetical model of the life cycle of emerging technologies through historical analysis. The team has chosen four technologies the study of which we believe will allow us to construct a working model of the life cycle of an emerging technology. The second objective of IPRO 341 is to begin an in-depth look into emerging technologies and assess its political, social, and economic impacts. By applying our hypothetical model to the current trends of emerging technologies, we will predict the impacts that the introduction of emerging technologies will have on society as a whole. The third objective of IPRO 341 is to reassess our model after completing other research dealing with emerging technologies. Since the model we develop can only be a theoretical model, we will have to continuously revise our model depending on any new information that comes about during the development of emerging technologies. The fourth objective of IPRO 341 is to provide an overview as to the importance of researching emerging technologies; how they affect society and the importance to all stakeholders involved.
