Show moreDo you love the zoo? Do you wish you could see all of the animals and learn about them too in just one easy visit? Our IPRO team is creating an iPhone application to do just that. We’re working with the Brookfield Zoo education staff and animal researchers to develop a guided inquiry process that will assist users in finding and identifying animals. Getting closer to an animal is a breeze. Because the animals’ locations are mapped, you can find them easily on foot or identify them by their color, pattern, and shape. Learn fun facts about any animal you choose while watching videos and scrolling through pictures. We’re working to create the best tour guide for the zoo that fits in your pocket.

Show moreThe City of Chicago has been nominated as the U.S. Bid City for 2016 Olympic Games and currently remains a strong contender for this title. If Chicago is selected as the Host City it will face the enormous task of providing temporary housing for all Olympiad participants including athletes, coaches, organizers, and media reporters. Continuing in the vein of last semester’s IPRO, our IPRO is proposing an economical and environmentally friendly solution to this challenge. We propose to utilize thousands of old shipping containers that are cluttering up shipping yards in the Chicago area and to convert them into low-cost housing units. With proper foresight, this challenge can become an opportunity for the I P R O 3 3 9 City to demonstrate an attitude of sustainability that can serve as a model for other cities around the world to follow suit. The intense media attention directed towards the Olympic Games could be channeled to showcase our commitment to environmentally and socially responsible actions.

Show moreThe first objective of IPRO 341 is to research four areas in which nanotechnology is being applied. Through this research the team will gain a basic understanding of the workings behind nanotechnology and determine applications which may interest our target audience (see second objective). The second objective of IPRO 341 is to determine a target audience. Since this semester’s team will focus on public assessment and education, a target audience must be chosen to present our research findings to. The third objective of IPRO 341 is to assess the current level of knowledge which the target audience has pertaining to nanotechnology. By determining what the audience already knows about the subject the team can organize and present the necessary information. The fourth objective of IPRO 341 is to educate our target audience. Public education of nanotechnology and its applications is the mission of this IPRO team. All previous objectives are part of this encompassing goal of public education. The team will work on putting together a tool for public education which can be used by the target audience to gain knowledge on the subject of nanotechnology. The team also plans to spread interest of the tool so that it may be used to educate the public.

Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities and grounds. Three major spaces currently hold latent potential at the school: the abandoned convent/dormitory, library and inner courtyards, used correctly they can become a catalyst for positive change. It is proposed that the dormitory be torn down, in its place a “community center” would be constructed. The space will service extracurricular activities at the school, public outreach programs (i.e. youth groups, cub/girl scouts, etc.), club rooms and a new space for library books storage and usage. The second space being addressed is the library, given its current isolated position the space would be transformed into a communication and media center equipped with the technology necessary for worldwide communication. The third space addressed is the inner courtyards of the building. With six dispersed throughout the school grounds, they can become an active part of the recreational aspect of the school’s environment: places of social interaction, outdoor classrooms, etc. Additionally, the greening techniques proposed for the school’s facilities will include methods for efficiency improvement, education and school promotion.

Show moreStudents who join this IPRO team will gain experience in working with chemical and environmental engineering students on important issues that relate to designing chemical and environmental engineering processes. Studens on this project will be split into three different subteams: (a) Design and Evaluation of New Flue Gas Cleanup processes to meet new Environmental Regulations: The objective of this project is to design and provide an economic assessment of new flue gas cleanup processes to meet new and future environmental emissions standards. The issues to be considered in this project include technical viability, process integration, economic feasibility, and environmental disposal of waste streams. An economic assessment of the market-based prices of emissions allowances will be used to determine the best long-run strategy. An assessment will be made on the effects of implementation of new technologies on the cost of electricity for both low sulfur western coal, and high sulfur Illinois coal to determine if governmental incentives are needed to promote the use of Illinois coal. (b) Design and evaluation of engineering systems to control VOCs from groundwater: The objective of this project is the design and cost estimation for various pollution control devices that can remove volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) from ground water. Effective and efficient treatment methods are needed to meet this clean up challenge. (c) Design of a Modern Hydrogen Production and Recovery Facility: The object of this project is to apply engineering principles of separation processes to recove pure hydrogen from mixed gases. This will include the availability and selection of a feed stream and an analysis of the feasibility and economics of commercial and innovative processed for the recovery operation.

Show moreIn 1983, a group of students from the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology began work on a project that described what a house of the future would entail. This team ended up winning the grand prize (10,000,000 yen) at the first International Design Competition held in Osaka, Japan because their creative and innovative ideas about how a house of the future should be built 22 years later, in 2005, IIT’s Interprofessional Projects program started the Sustainable Village Project, an endeavor to build a sustainable and environmentally-aware community on the IIT campus. Part of this project was to design the house of the future in such a fashion as would fit in with the Sustainable Village. Through use of research both in the 1983 House of the Future, as well as the House of the Future developed in the spring of 2005, this semester IPRO 301 – Back to the House of the Future had the task of establishing a system of ideas and concepts which could be globally integrated to change the way modern housing is viewed and approached by builders and residents alike. Instead of simply being a structure that disrupts the environment and depletes natural resources, the house of the future will allow for the building of units which can be integrated into the environment and are more sustainable and efficient. By developing a methodology based on next-generation design principles, key technological advances, and considerations for building regulations and human health and safety concerns, IPRO 301 will lay a universal framework for constructing Houses of the Future of all shapes and sizes.

Show moreThe overall conflict that IPRO 313 is trying to resolve is the dependency on oil as a fuel source for automotive vehicles. Along with the global and financial concerns that go along with oil as a fuel source, there has been growing interest in electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are the competitive issue that IPRO 313 has researched, investigated, and is working to resolve. Currently, most electric vehicles run on lithium batteries. The problems associated with these vehicles are the recharge time and service station compatibilities. The most popular electric vehicle is the Testla Roadster, which has a driving distance of approximately 270 miles per full charge. Although this is an adequate driving distance, it takes six to eight hours for a full charge. This amount of charge time is a vital drawback for electric vehicles. The vast majority of service stations are not electric vehicle friendly. Gas stations do not and have not set up areas for electric battery pack replacement, or vehicle charge. Withou

Show moreSick Building Syndrome is a general category for a number of ailments, allergies, and complaints, all due to some physical aspect of a building, usually related to the ventilation system. The existence of low levels of pollutants, synthetic irritants, fungi or other microorganisms, or simply a lack of adequate fresh air, are sufficient factors to cause reactions in a percentage of building occupants. In 1997, we discovered that the slimy black mold has proven deadly in three Oakland County homes (R. Mishra, 1997). The sick building syndrome is a very serious problem, since we construct more and more tight building for energy-saving measures, chemical pollutants are not diluted and are continually recirculated throughout the building. Despite numerous investigations, journal articles and conferences, little has actually been proven about the causes of sick building syndrome. The causes are multiple and sometimes very difficult to detect. The only common denominator of Sick Building Syndrome is insufficient ventilation air to remove the contaminants. Inadequate ventilation has been considered to be a causal factor in 50 per cent of sick buildings in the United States and in 68 per cent of Canadian investigations (Melius 1984; Collet and Sterling 1988). Sometimes the source of the problem is microbial growth inside wet ductwork or other air-handling equipment. Air-conditioning systems themselves can harbour pollutants and micro-organisms and so add to the contamination of the building. In some new buildings the problem can be the use of synthetic materials (such as insulation or carpeting) which release hydrocarbons or other vapors into the air at a very low rate. In rare instances the outside air intakes may draw in foul air from waste storage or processing areas, or from parking areas heavily laden with auto exhaust. These cases represent bad ventilation system design. Major activities and tasks:- Understanding the sick building syndrome (Why good indoor air quality is important? What causes Sick Building Syndrome? The effect of poor indoor air quality on the life and health of people),- Literature revue to obtain rules and solution for each specific problem (new and retrofit buildings),- A methodology technique to diagnose a sick building.- Case study: each group of students analyze a sick building in the area of Chicago,- Use computer software to determine the level of indoor air quality in the building and how to improve it.- Expert System to help the designer to integrate the sick building syndrome in the building design: A number of rules should be developed to integrate expertise from different professional concerned with indoor air quality and sick building syndrome, using a questionnaire and face-to-face interviews. The sick building syndrome is a multidisciplinary problem since the causes of sick building syndrome are multiple, such as, contamination (inside and outside), material used to construct the building (formaldehyde, fiberglass), inadequate ventilation, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, cigarette smoking, humidity, noise and illumination, scabies, and other unknown syndrome. An interprofessional experience in different fields such as HVAC systems, Indoor air quality, Biology and medicine (allergies, molds, fungi), Maintenance, Building Science, Building Materials, and environmental engineering is needed.

Show moreThe objective of this IPRO is to choose an appropriate method (or combination of multiple methods) for desulfurizing coal before combustion takes place in a furnace for energy production. Three methods will be researched in order to find the best way of desulfurization- physical, chemical, and biological. Whichever method(s) is found to be the most effective at removing sulfur from coal will be chosen. After this decision the group will move forward and design the process equipment; later an economic assessment will be done to cost the equipment. All of the group’s goals will be completed within this semester.
