Show moreMultivariate statistical process monitoring (MSPM), contribution plots, and parity space fault diagnosis (FD) techniques are used to detect abnormal operation of dynamic processes and diagnose sensor and actuator faults. The methods are illustrated by monitoring the critical control points (CCP) and diagnosing causes of abnormal operation of a pilot pasteurization plant. An empirical model of the process is developed by using subspace state space system identification methods and normal process data. The process data collected under the influence of different magnitude and duration of faults in sensors and actuators are used to validate the MSPM and FD techniques. T-2 and squared prediction error (SPEN) charts are used as MSPM charts. A parity space technique for dynamic stochastic systems and dynamic trends in contribution plots of T-2 and SPEN statistics are used for FD. The detection and FD by these techniques show significant improvements over univariate methods.

Show moreIn 1983, a group of students from the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology began work on a project that described what a house of the future would entail. This team ended up winning the grand prize (10,000,000 yen) at the first International Design Competition held in Osaka, Japan because their creative and innovative ideas about how a house of the future should be built 22 years later, in 2005, IIT’s Interprofessional Projects program started the Sustainable Village Project, an endeavor to build a sustainable and environmentally-aware community on the IIT campus. Part of this project was to design the house of the future in such a fashion as would fit in with the Sustainable Village. Through use of research both in the 1983 House of the Future, as well as the House of the Future developed in the spring of 2005, this semester IPRO 301 – Back to the House of the Future had the task of establishing a system of ideas and concepts which could be globally integrated to change the way modern housing is viewed and approached by builders and residents alike. Instead of simply being a structure that disrupts the environment and depletes natural resources, the house of the future will allow for the building of units which can be integrated into the environment and are more sustainable and efficient. By developing a methodology based on next-generation design principles, key technological advances, and considerations for building regulations and human health and safety concerns, IPRO 301 will lay a universal framework for constructing Houses of the Future of all shapes and sizes.

Show moreThe main goal of IPRO 303 is to investigate how SmartSignal’s modeling technology can provide value in detecting problems on environmental systems: The main objectives that SmartSignal would like for the team to investigate are: · What are the regulatory drivers – changes in laws/regulation occurring at various points in time? Are the regulations fleet-wide or regionally specific? Can credits be traded? Etc. · What types of systems are being deployed to remove what pollutants? Describe different sub-types and configurations within a type of system, and how common they are. · How much instrumentation is available on these systems, and what signals are measured (temperature, pressure, chemistry analysis, etc.)? How much diversity is there in the levels of available instrumentation? IPRO 303 Spring’09 13th February 2009 IPRO303 Project Plan Page 2 of 7 · What are the failure and performance degradation problems that occur? How common are they? What are the ramifications of these problems – outages, derates, having to burn more expensive fuel or turn up the “peaking” generation units that are more expensive to run, etc.? · How can the available instrumentation be used to remotely monitor and detect developing problems?

Show more1048 million gallons of water is used in Chicago everyday. Chicago replenishes almost none of it. Although there is no water shortage currently, many believe that water will be to the next century what oil is to this century: a huge commodity. Twenty percent of the world's potable water is contained in the Great Lakes. In order to be responsible consumers of this natural resource, Chicago is looking into different plans to return water to Lake Michigan. The purpose of Growing Water IPRO is to create a prototype of an Eco-boulevard on the IIT campus that will serve as an example of practices that could be implemented across the Chicago-land area to manage and naturally purify storm water and sewage water so it can be reintroduced to Lake Michigan. These Eco-boulevards will also serve as educational facilities to inform the community about the growing scarcity of water and how to conserve this precious resource.

Show moreThe solution will take the form of a novel system based on a refrigeration cycle driven by heat. The cycle will be built around a "pressure exchanger" consisting of a piston, along with solenoid valves controlled by a microprocessor. Heat will most likely be obtained through the combustion of biomass such as plant by-products and animal wastes, but will be flexible enough to allow for more conventional fuel types such as kerosene and coal.

Show moreSome aspects of hadron production in p-p collisions remain unresolved, including the low-hadron-momentum structure of high-parton-energy dijets, separation of triggered dijets from the underlying event (UE), the systematics of multiple parton interactions and possible systematic underestimation of dijet contributions to high-energy nuclear collisions. In this study we apply a minimum-bias trigger-associated (TA) correlation analysis to p-p collisions. We extract a hard component from TA correlations that can be compared with measured jet fragment systematics derived from e+-e− collisions. The kinematic limits on jet fragment production may be determined. The same method may be extended to A-A collisions where the role of minimum-bias jets in spectra and correlations is strongly contested.

Show moreGenerally phase lock loops (PLLs) are utilized in the implementation of the conventional clock generators and frequency multipliers. However there are some issues happened during designing PLLs. First of all, PLLs has a stability issue due to its higherorder systems. And this issue will cause the change of the loop bandwidth when PVT is different. Secondly, in PLLs, the output of the VCO will be fed back to the loop, which causes a peak phase error unexpectedly larger than the desired phase variation since jitter is accumulating over the oscillation cycles. These issues will make the design of a PLLbased frequency multiplier more complicated and challenging. In order to solve these issues, this thesis presents a 2-GHz frequency multiplier based on digital delay lock loop. In this design when the DLL is locked the digital DLL operated in the open-loop mode will reduce the jitter and power consumption due to dithering in the lock condition. In this design a compensation structure is proposed to keep track of any potential phase error caused by environmental variations. The reference input frequency is 500M Hz. This frequency multiplier is designed and fabricated in a 65nm CMOS. The thesis also provides theory and simulation results on frequency multiplier for readers.

Show moreGenetically modified crops have come to play an increasingly large role in our daily lives. Unfortunately these crops remain a mystery to much of the general population. For some, ideas about GM crops are exciting and represent hope for new potential in science and agriculture, for others they represent potential danger, and for others there are simply many unanswered questions. Our goal this semester will be to create a new source of information about GM products and to provide information that will answer the many questions we all have about this important subject. To do this, our objectives will be to: 1. Collect background information in an unbiased and comprehensive manner about laws and regulations regarding genetically modified crops. 2. Gather information about public opinion concerning GM crops. 3. Present facts about the processes and technologies that are used in this industry. 4. Create a database of known genetically modified crops, potential allergens, and traits in order to provide future IPRO’s with a foundation of knowledge concerning GM crops.

Show moreFabrication Laboratories, or Fab Labs, were started as a community outreach program by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology providing digital fabrication tools for rapid prototyping to the general public. The Museum of Science and Industry has partnered with IPRO to further develop the Fab Lab at their site. IPRO 333 has been rendered the task of working with the administration in the Fab lab of MSI to design methodologies for furthering the use of the laboratory and assisting in determining its end goals for both the museum and the community by working with the lab directors to broaden the possible uses of the lab, promoting membership at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, and involving the community in science and technology programs at the museum. In order to accomplish our tasks we have broken into three main teams, each of which will focus on a different aspect of the lab. The first team will be responsible for creating events specific to the museum members, creating proposals for low‐cost, high‐profit activities for the lab, and possibly creating a website where users of the lab may sign up for time in the lab, reserve or order materials, and rent storage space for long term projects they wish to work on. The second team is responsible for integrating the Fab Lab into the current working exhibits as well as future exhibitions. The third team will be responsible for designing and creating new programs for users of the Fab Lab, such as the students enrolled in the Science Achievers program or museum members.

Show moreThe purpose of this IPRO is to develop a robust, working prototype that can automatically monitor and detect a problem with a milling machine at A. FInkl & Sons Co. This IPRO is in its fourth semester and there are two challenges remaining: (1) alerting management to the detection of broken teeth during machining; and (2) developing spatial representations of items undergoing heat treatment. However, A. Finkl & Sons has asked us to concentrate solely on the goal of finding a way to detect when a break occurs in one of the milling teeth and then alert the mechanic monitoring the machine in order to replace it. This system will involve measuring vibrations using an accelerometer or by the use of laser detection. The goal of this IPRO is to research, test, and inform A. FInkl & Sons of the best solution to invest in, therefore they can decide what is better for their company.

Show moreRenewable energy is one of the most important and widely researched topics today. It is classically defined as any form of energy that comes from renewable sources and, for all practical purposes, cannot be depleted. This may include solar, wind, or geothermal power, as well as biomass or biofuels. When considering biomass, or any living or recently dead biological material, the chemical energy of the molecules is generally collected through the process of combustion.
