Show moreThe mission of “How Many Earths?” is to educate people on the issues of sustainability and energy needs, concerns, and sources. In doing this we look to expand on work that has been done in previous semesters in addition to developing modules for a wider age base. Previously the modules have been focused on High School and Middle School students; this semester, we look to develop a program for elementary school classrooms in addition to post-high school education.

Show moreIPRO 349 2.1 is focused on creating a prototype of a map reporting component that will be used as an addition to the ComArch Report Book software. The Report Book is a bundle of software used for data analysis that is not built in Excel. ComArch Report Books are used to analyze transactional data, as well as profit control data. For example, it interprets data collected from transactions at stores through the register data gathered during the day, but can also help companies analyze why profit margins are different in different regions

Show moreOver 250,000 people in the U.S. alone die annually from sudden cardiac arrest, and many of those that survive suffer brain damage, which can begin within minutes of the heart attack. Major risks among survivors include tissue damage, including brain damage. We are currently developing three life saving devices which could greatly decrease the risks which cardiac arrest victims face, and also save lives.

Show moreInformal observations of a practical and creative approach piloting Blended Library Instruction for undergraduate Civil Architecture and Engineering students, in collaboration with faculty. At Illinois Institute of Technology students don’t receive library instruction as a required class or in tandem with a composition class. Faculty will schedule one-time sessions, which ideally should be planned with a class assignment in mind, but students are rarely engaged with a one time instruction. Many have IKIA syndrome or I Know It Already syndrome. The Millennials are a group that has integrated technology into every aspect of their lives and they assume that retrieving useful or necessary information will be easy. When they discover this isn’t the case lack of time, heightened anxiety, and increased frustration can prevent them from doing their best work. By intentionally creating a similar crisis prior to library instruction, students were more interested in what they stood to gain during pending library instruction. In this presentation we will discuss: 1) A creative means of delivering library instruction to a traditionally challenging population: engineering undergraduate students 2) Qualitative information collected via multiple assignments and interpreted in a quantitative fashion, as well as our observations. 3) A method for preparing students for library instruction that can be applied in almost any discipline without asking the instructor to sacrifice class time.

Show moreThe aim of this project was to design a use for the area around the Michael Reese memorial. This area is currently unused and the city has asked for ideas to use the area. The previous IPRO had designed an extended living facility to be placed in the area. This was a good start but there is an extensive amount of land that is still unused. The city wishes to utilize this land so that the maximum amount of tax revenue can be seen. This semester, the IPRO team took what was suggested last year and improved it by developing a hotel, residential, and retail area. The plan called for different phases in which each area was either developed or added to during each phase. Extensive research was done to calculate number of units and location of the units. In the future the IPRO should future its research in the cost aspect of the project.

Show moreDuring the milling operations at an industrial steel producer like A. Finkl & Sons (Chicago, IL), a substantial amount of time and money is lost due to the fact that cutting inserts break and without warning. The goal of this project is to devise an effective means by which a cutting insert breakage event can be quickly and reliably detected, thereby minimizing damage to the steel and other cutting inserts, and also freeing technicians to attend multiple machines at a time. This increases the productivity of their operations, and it has the potential to save A. Finkl & Sons substantial costs per year in time lost in rework and prematurely broken cutting inserts.

Right now, NAVTEQ’s focus is on how to make their technology more pedestrian and community friendly. Our project has two main sections – 1. Target the majority of mobile device users, and give them an outlet to report any changes, mistakes or developments that have been overlooked by NAVTEQ. 2. Come up with a solution which enables the average map user – men and women ages 18-35, students and tourists – to address these alterations in a simple, hassle free way

Show moreSudden Cardiac Arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for an estimated 325,000 deaths each year according to the Heart Rhythm Foundation. Cardiac arrest is different from a typical heart attack because it involves a complete stopping of the heart. Brain injury is likely to occur if the cardiac arrest is untreated for more than 5 minutes and a person cannot be revived after 10 minutes of no action. This is because the arrest sets off a chain of metabolic reactions, which leads to swelling of the brain tissue. Cardiac arrest results in ischemia reperfusion injury, which is when circulation is restored and high levels of oxygen rich blood rushes back into the brain causing brain damage. Decreasing the metabolism of the victim may result in a decrease of ischemia reperfusion injury. Reducing the oxygen level that enters the body when the victim revives and slowly increasing this level may also reduce reperfusion injury. However, current procedures dictate that 100% oxygen be given to cardiac arrest victim.

Show moreIPRO 307 is following the path of its predecessors in order to help improve the shipping transportations and facilities in Kankakee County, IL. While there have been other IPRO teams that have contributed to the modernization of the intermodal system at MI-Jack Shipping Company, our sponsor is now looking for us to further their research in this field. They would also like us to further the research in high speed intermodal along with a viaduct enhancement system. One of our tasks is to select a location in Kankakee County to place the intermodal system. We have decided to break this into two locations with one being in-city and the other being out-of-city. Kankakee County has been selected because two major rail lines pass through it. There is also a highway that runs through the center of it. Therefore, it is an ideal 2 location for an intermodal yard. Also, there is a wind farm being built in Kankakee, so we will be able to save energy by thinking green. In our selection process for a location, we may need to relocate some people. Therefore, our plan is to have affordable housing at our out-of-city location. We will design this affordable housing along with the warehouses and storage facilities, which go along with the design of an intermodal yard.
