Show more Evaluate and incorporate previous presentation feedback into new methods of addressing the scientific aspect of global warming. This primarily includes subdividing the issue into four major aspects that contribute to this effect. Present material to a larger and more diverse audiences, including schools, community centers, libraries, non-profit organizations, and other possibilities. Focus on solid, scientific data from credible sources that define why and how global warming is occurring, rather than discussing the politics and economics that surround the issue. Create a platform for this IPRO to continue in the future, using resources and feedback received from the current semester.

Show moreThe City of Chicago has been nominated as the U.S. Bid City for 2016 Olympic Games and currently remains a strong contender for this title. If Chicago is selected as the Host City it will face the enormous task of providing temporary housing for all Olympiad participants including athletes, coaches, organizers, and media reporters. Continuing in the vein of last semester’s IPRO, our IPRO is proposing an economical and environmentally friendly solution to this challenge. We propose to utilize thousands of old shipping containers that are cluttering up shipping yards in the Chicago area and to convert them into low-cost housing units. With proper foresight, this challenge can become an opportunity for the I P R O 3 3 9 City to demonstrate an attitude of sustainability that can serve as a model for other cities around the world to follow suit. The intense media attention directed towards the Olympic Games could be channeled to showcase our commitment to environmentally and socially responsible actions.

Show moreSupervision of distributed manufacturing processes producing different grades of a product requires intelligent reconfiguration strategies during grade transition phases to minimize off-spec production. Agent-based approaches are ideal for such problems and they provide flexible, robust, and emergent solutions during dynamically changing process conditions. Three different multi-layered multi-agent, frameworks are proposed for the supervision of grade transitions in autocatalytic reactor networks. The first framework is the centralized framework and it is useful for small-scale grade transitions where only a small region of the network needs to be reconfigured. Alternatively, the other two frameworks use a decentralized approach. The first decentralized framework implements genetic algorithms and the second one uses self-organizing heuristics and auctions for large-scale grade transitions. The case studies demonstrate that as the complexity of the reconfiguration problem increases, decentralized solutions perform more efficiently.

Show moreThis is the first semester of EnPro 350. Although the title suggests wood reclamation via arts and crafts, we have decided to expand the focus to reclamation via urban wood and lumber. We would like to start a business that addresses a need in the market for convenient removal of dead or infested trees in an urban setting. This encompasses all trees not located in forests or tree groves, and includes those found in urban setting. Often, the expense to remove one’s trees from his property is a time-intensive, confusing, and expensive process. We have decided to provide the service of tree health assessment, removal, processing, lumber certification, and marketing through utilizing the concept of vertical integration. Mission Statement: "To Satisfy Our Customers by Providing High Quality Wood from Urban Forests while Creating a Positive Change in the Environment"

Show moreTwo methods for assessing the effects of forced periodic catalytic reactor operation are presented. The vibrational control method is an analytical technique which evaluates the effects of high frequency forcing of system parameters by the method of averaging. The second technique is a numerical tool based on a shooting algorithm. These methods are capable of handling multiple input forcing and various shapes of forcing functions. Both methods are applied to isothermal, adiabatic and nonadiabatic operation of an internal recycle reactor in which the catalytic oxidation of ethylene takes place. The basic features of both techniques are discussed and the results obtained by using these methods are compared. Effects of single and multiple input parameter forcing are investigated. Experimental verification of the theoretical results is also performed for the isothermal case.

Show moreThis semester IPRO 329, Edutainment, continues placing its complete efforts toward an educational computer gaming suite targeted at fourth-grade students and the subjects these students struggle with most in school. The tentative title, Scholars of the Lost Exhibit, remains the same this semester. Work on this project began two semesters ago as the team completed their award-winning game College Pursuit. During this semester, we will continue to focus on the design, development, testing, and marketing of Scholars of the Lost Exhibit.

Show moreThe main goal of the fall semester of IPRO 331 is to build off the previous two IPROs in terms of scientific and global data while further enhancing the knowledge of the general public throughout Chicago and the greater Chicago area. The team plans on utilizing the past data (which is presented on iGroups) and creating a more streamlined presentation that covers all of the main topics while enabling the group to add more relevant and interesting information. It is the group’s philosophy that there is no reason to re-do what past groups have done in terms of research when it is already made available. This will allow the group to focus more heavily on the main goal of community outreach. In terms of the community outreach, it is still the same goal as the previous IPROs to reach as many possible candidates as the semester allows. Another one of the group’s philosophies is that reaching as many people as possible is the key to making this semester’s IPRO successful.

Show moreThe plan for this IPRO is to develop a design for a large scale parking garage that can accommodate about 500 cars. The objective of this project is to develop a design that goes beyond the standard parking systems used today. Rather, the attempt is to have a design which is more representative of “parking garages of future.” And as such, such features as quick handling of incoming and outgoing cars, efficiency in storage and aesthetics are considered in design. The building will be completely self-sufficient and will have to incorporate the architecture of the various buildings on campus. The design could have separate entrance and exit ramp towers, ramps incorporated with parking, or the futuristic design may be automated. An automated system will include a vehicle elevator of lift system to move the vehicle so the driver does not have to. The structure could be built with reinforced concrete or steel. The design will also include accessibility following the requirements set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Show more3 billion people cook their meals over open fires on primitive stoves inside their homes. Indoor air pollution from those primitive stoves kills 1.5 million people worldwide. Furthermore, indoor air pollution is fifth most costly environmental degradation issue in the Peru. Previous IPRO 325 classes have made stove for Peru. However, the stoves made from previous IPRO 325 classes did not work properly. The purpose of this subteam of the spring 2010 IPRO 325 is to improve the stove and help Peru realistically.

Show moreThere are currently around 40 million people living in urban slums without adequate water and sanitation in India. In addition, there is no sewage system in urban slums and water is not being recycled. In a particular slum in Mumbai that we are looking at, people need to walk to the foothill 2km away in order to get water. It takes a lot of time to carry su cient amount of water for a family for daily use. Water obtained in this way is primarily used for washing. Since there is no private place for people to wash, people often wash themselves on the street and the water is simply wasted. Our team attempted to address two main issues for this semester. Firstly, we tried to provide people with clean and private facility for washing while allowing the water to be recycled. Secondly, we tried to make transporting water easier and more e cient by developing a device that allows you to carry water on your back.

Show moreIIT’s core vision is built around the principle that no matter how good we get, we can always improve. As the University seeks to assert itself as a member of the top tier of academic institutions in the U.S., there are many ideas for improvement up for implementation. Among these ideas is the goal to make IIT the most sustainable, urban university campus in the United States. IPRO 326 (“A Greener IIT”) is based upon the idea that in order to accomplish this, we must improve the sustainability of IIT’s main campus landscape.

The IPRO 303 team will be focusing on the impact of equipment failures that lead to downtime and maintenance associated with the failures. A comparison of current industry practices in dealing with these problems, along with a detailed economic analysis of the true costs involved, will be the major goal. A final report of the findings and conclusions of the IPRO 303 team will be provided to our sponsor, SmartSignal Inc.
