Show moreThe teams purpose is to seek a union between living comfortably and living sustainably. To design for a future Chicago‐area community, which first minimizes its energy consumption and then uses the most sustainable methods to fulfill the remaining needs of the inhabitants. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living. This community will also serve as an example to Chicago‐area municipalities about the benefits of sustainable planning, design, and living.

Show moreThe overall objective of IPRO 340 is to improve the quality of healthcare by improving information technology at ACCESS health care. The specific objective of the Spring 2006 semester is to help to prepare ACCESS to adopt new technology. The first main assignment of the team is to determine employees’ current computer skill levels by refining and rolling out last semester’s computer Assessment Plan. Our second main assignment is to investigate training solutions and develop the training protocol that will bring ACCESS employee’s up to date with the computer skills they will need to adopt new information technologies ACCESS plans to implement in the near future. Our last assignment is to investigate various Electronic Medical Record (EMR) functionalities and compare leading EMR vendors to support ACCESS in deciding which EMR vendor to implement throughout their network.

Show moreThe regions of stability and parametric sensitivity of countercurrent reactor/heat exchangers are determined explicitly in the plane of inlet feed temperature-inlet coolant temperature. The concept of phase plane analysis is generalized to include all orders of reaction rate expressions, a broader range of system parameters, and is extended to the case of autothermal reactors. An industrial hydrocarbon oxidation reactor model and an autothermal CO oxidation reactor model have been used to illustrate and to evaluate the analysis method. The approach presented here is appealing since the region of safe inlet temperatures is determined explicitly and the region of safe operation can be optimized with respect to the reactor design parameters.

Show moreThe IPRO team was successful in designing a process that converts biomass into liquid fuels for transportation. The biomass chosen was cow manure because of two main reasons. The abundance of cows in southern Wisconsin provides an ideal place for the process to be built. Also, because most other types of potential biomasses currently have uses, manure was favorable. The process was split into three sections: gasification, gas clean-up and Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactor.

Show moreIPRO 306’s overall objective is to augment existing knowledge regarding the patterns and accuracies of retrospective recall of affect in the clinically depressed. This will be done by evaluating recall accuracy in the nonhospitalized clinically depressed population and comparing it to that of the nonclinical population. The specific objective of the Fall 2006 semester is to recruit twenty-five depressed and twenty-five nondepressed controls through advertisement, screen them, train them in the use of PDAs and collect data on their momentary affect rating.

Show moreIPRO 340 (The Idea Fermentors) is working with Rock Bottom Brewery to determine alternative uses for the spent grain the brewery produces. Over 1,000 pounds of spent grain are produced at each of the three area locations weekly. Spent grain has many applications because of its high content of protein and fiber. Applications range from production of bio-plastics and bio-fuel, to agricultural uses as animal feed and compost material, to reuse as food for people. A major issue that Rock Bottom Brewery faces is that spent grain spoils very quickly, so alternative uses of spent grain must happen within a matter of days. IPRO 340 will determine what will be the best use of Rock Bottom Brewery’s spent grain in terms of logistics, cost, practicality, and environmental impact. The Idea Fermentors will lean and understand the brewery process and various applications for spent grain, as it pertains to Rock Bottom Brewery. The team will work together to accomplish project requirements as set forth by the IPRO office at IIT on time as well as satisfy the sponsor company’s needs.

Show moreCurrent insulin therapy for patients with type 1 diabetes often results in high variability in blood glucose concentrations and may cause hype rglycemic/hypoglycemic episodes. Closing the glucose control loop with a fully automated electro-mechanical pancreas will improve the quality of life for insulin-dependent patients. An adaptive control algorithm is proposed to keep glucose concentrations within normoglycemic range and dynamically respond to glycemic challenges. A model-based control strategy is used to calculate the required insulin infusion rate, while the model parameters are recursively tuned. The algorithm handles delays associated with insulin absorption, time-lag between subcutaneous and blood glucose concentrations, and variations in inter/intra-subject glucose-insulin dynamics. Simulation results for simultaneous meat and physiological disturbances are demonstrated for subcutaneous insulin infusion.

Show moreEfficiency in parking facilities has been set to low standards since self-parking was introduced in the 1950s1. As technology has developed, parking has been left in the past. Drivers are increasingly realizing the problem as they become accustomed to other technology, which increases the efficiency of their lives (eg smartphones). While driving around searching for an open lot, circling a garage for an parking spot, or wandering through garage a looking for a parked car, people have time to ponder the many improvements that should be made to the parking experience. Simply Park: IPRO 365 is taking initiative to seize the possibilities new technologies offer the parking industry. The result should be improved driver experience as well as increased efficiency and profitability of parking facilities. The system will include signs visible to passersby that display the number of vacancies within a parking facility. Once in the parking facility, additional signs will direct drivers to sections of the facility with vacancies. Colored lights above each parking spot will indicate the state of occupancy for quick reference when looking down an aisle. When a driver parks, the ticket they receive at the entrance gate will associate their ticket to the spot they parked in, so when the driver returns to the facility he/she can present his/her ticket to a kiosk which will notify him/her how to get back to his/her car. As the vehicle leaves the ticket association will be reset and displays will update to show one more spot available. Additional interfaces through mobile and internet applications will further expedite the parking process. 1National

However, the team’s main objective is to add a Request for Proposal tool to the existing model allowing companies to determine the effectiveness of outsourcing different aspects of warehouse operations. This team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically warehouse logistics pricing. For the spring semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Analyze existing model (Shipping, Manufacturing, Transportation, etc.) in terms of being user-friendly and effectiveness at accurately predicting cost versus revenue and whether the operations input should be outsourced. Refine the current model given the suggestions of a surveyed group, not differentiating the contributions of the IPRO students from the software users. Research costs associated with logistic processes. Develop a multi-purpose activity outsourcing tool for common use called “Request for Proposal”.

Show moreOur objectives for this semester are to: (1) Develop a teaching kit containing curriculum to present the Ecological Footprint module and instructional materials designed to help teachers teach the module. Use the teaching kit as a means of spreading our module beyond our immediate scope, to high school teachers, college campus organizations and volunteer based groups. (2) Develop a website to enrich the experience of the module, provide a professional contact interface and deliver our educational message to a broader audience. (3) Promote How Many Earths and education on resource consumption by developing marketing plan, publishing stories in local media outlets and capitalizing on publicity opportunities. (4) Continue to reach out to high school students by visiting more Chicago-land high schools, continuing to present the Ecological Footprint module and beginning to present the Cradle-to- Cradle module. (5) Refine the Cradle-to-Cradle presentation by analyzing feedback and response of pupils. (6) Continue to collect and analyze feedback from students and teachers concerning both of the modules, our presentation style and the teaching kit. Use this information to continually enhance the learning experience.

Show moreWhen using a personality questionnaire for predicting behavior, criterion-related validity improvements have historically focused on improving scale level construction techniques over examining the global impact of item-level characteristics on criterion-related validity. This article investigates the impact of item-level characteristics on the criterion-related validity of the Five-Factor Model (FFM) (as a personality instrument) as a predictor of job-related behavior. Two self-report FFM measures were correlated with workplace observer ratings to derive mean validity scores for each of the FFM items. A panel of judges then rated these items on the following item characteristics: ambiguity, abstractness, comprehensibility, wording, negation, transparency and social desirability. As hypothesized, social desirability, negation, wording and transparency were correlated with criterion-related validity. Contrary to the study hypothesis, abstractness was found to be positively correlated with criterion-related validity.

Problems with systems currently available are: some products are not compatible with all bike systems causing the need to purchase new parts, the cost of the available products is expensive, and some of the available IPRO 324 Project Plan Page: 4 measuring systems are not very accurate.
