This is done primarily through its "Urban Kidz" series of books. The author, Angela E. Davis, is a retired elementary teacher with a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction/Early Childhood Education. Her passion for educating young people led her to develop a series of books that would be both educational and enjoyable. She is also a frequent visitor to schools, conducting "Meet the Author Day", where she speaks to both students and teachers about realizing their dreams. Angela's mission is to provide young children with books and toys that will enhance their learning and broaden their thinking. To that end, she has developed a concept for a line of learning doll called Tummi Pals. Angela has researched the market and has not found a doll with the attributes of Tummi Pal. Her hope is to fill the void left by the initial excitement of the Cabbage Patch dolls.

Show moreRenewable energy is one of the most important and widely researched topics today. It is classically defined as any form of energy coming from any naturally replenish-able source. This may include everything from solar to wind power, as well as biomass or biofuels. When considering biomass, or any (living or recently-dead) biological material, the chemical energy of the molecules is generally collected through combustion. The area of liquid fuels from biomass has especially gained much notoriety and support in recent years. This is due to the lower emissions and clean-burning nature of these fuels when compared to more traditional approaches, as well as the obvious renewable nature of the starting material. While vegetable oils or animal fats can be used as a replacement for diesel fuels, corn, switchgrass, or other grains are more widely used to produce ethanol for use in common combustion engines. Today’s E85 fuel is sold to customers with a chemical makeup of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. The use of solid biomass as a direct supplier of energy, however, is an area still left relatively unexplored in this growing field. In theory, and as preliminary research suggests, harvesting energy directly from solid biomass may be considerably more efficient than gathering it from its processed liquid counterpart. In fact, some studies suggest that the energy acquired from burning ethanol is up to 67% lower than is contained in the plant cellulose from which it is derived.[1] There are, however, several other factors besides energy projections to consider when looking at the economic and market viability of such an approach. For example, one of the main advantages of liquid fuels over solid is the ease of transportation and storage. Additionally, the feasibility of developing a whole new process of biomass collection and processing must be balanced with economic and logistical constraints. This includes not only careful analysis of energy and cost balances, but also in-depth examination of all equipment, manpower and environmental limitations. IPRO 349 was established to examine these (and many more) considerations in the viability of sold fuel from biomass. Specifically, we have narrowed the scope of our research to biomass derived from corn stover (leaves and stalk left in the ground after harvesting) within the state of Illinois. Illinois was chosen because it is currently the largest producer of corn in the nation.[2] Corn stover has been shown to have an energy content of 5,290 Btu/lb. wet, and 7,560 Btu/lb. dry.[2]With such an approach, it may be possible to utilize what would otherwise be considered “waste” to produce useable, renewable energy. For the purposes of this project, cogeneration, or the simultaneous generation of both electricity and useful heat will be examined.

These need to be personified in terms of various classes of users that will co-exist and the potential use by each. In a little over a decade, the internet has become a part of everyday life. What started with simple applications such as email, has expanded to providing Blogs, Social Networking Sites, streaming video content, low cost (sometimes fee) international calls and has evolved into massive e-commerce engine. {There will remain users who use the internet for simple tasks as email, while others will use it to get all their multi-media content and blogs with multitude of opportunities to monetize the same. } The overall increase in consumption (MB) as well as the need for ever-increasing speeds (Mbps) may require ISPs to embrace technologies beyond what is currently envisioned as the industry evolves from broadband technologies to wideband technologies. This change in the environment needs to be evaluated from the view of an ISP/ content provider like a cable company and the new technologies and capabilities it needs to embrace to ensure relevance in the ever-changing world.

Show moreThe IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester is to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research and for the space itself to be able to be as sustainable as possible throughout research this semester. Since the end goal is a rather ambitious one, a more realistic goal is to have an energy plan for following IPRO’s to work off of and to have the space cleared so that the developed plan can be tested. The team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable energy systems. For this fall semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Research office utilities that consume low amounts of energy, and investigate how to improve the efficiency of current utilities. Research and test various energy efficient lighting solutions. Research environmentally friendly floor, wall, and ceiling finishes along with necessary office furniture. Develop a website to display the development progress of the Zero-Energy Lab and provide information regarding “green technology” Clean and prepare the 6,000 ft2 space for future inhabitants. Using the research, develop a program proposal for the Zero-Energy Lab.

Show moreThere exists a strong demand for orthotics and prosthetics (O & P) in Latin America, with approximately 2.5 million people in need of this type of care. IPRO 309 was started in the spring of 2006 with the goal of helping to make this type of care more readily available. However, there are only 50 certified, and 1500 uncertified, O & P practitioners in Latin America. In order to become a certified practitioner, a student must graduate from an ISPO accredited program. Unfortunately, there is currently only one ISPO accredited program in existence in Latin America, along with several other programs that are not ISPO accredited. In October of 2004, Centro Don Bosco (Bogotá, Colombia), Don Bosco University (San Salvador, El Salvador), and the Laboratorio Gilete (Bogotá, Colombia) signed an agreement to establish the first accredited O & P education program in Colombia. Since then, Centro Don Bosco has allotted 3,500 square feet of space for the thriving faculty, classrooms, manufacturing training, and vocational workspace that are necessary for an ISPO accredited program. There are three levels of accreditation according to ISPO standards. Category III involves the design and manufacturing of orthotic and prosthetic devices, Category II includes the fabrication of the devices as well as direct patient care, and Category I includes production, treatment for patients, and research and development. The equivalent to ISPO in the United States is the American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC). Because it is independent from the ISPO, the ABC standards of accreditation will need to be taken into account in order to carefully cross cultural and national boundaries.

The focus of this project is to design a system that encourages energy conserving behavior in residents by use of an interface that displays real time energy use of a residence. For this system to encourage conservation on a significant scale it is necessary that it can be installed in both new and existing buildings. The interface needs to give detailed enough data about the building’s energy consumption for the user to make well informed decisions of how to save energy, but at the same time the data must be presented in an easy to understand format. Also, the unit or units that provide the data must be accessible enough so that the user can at any time be aware of the impact that activating a certain device will have on energy consumption in their home.

Show moreThe scope of this project is to present a variety of solutions, determining and defining a system required to implement a digital façade for the new Hype Park Art Center. The pioneering icon for the Hyde Park Art Center will engage neighbors and those who pass by, in addition to ideally attracting visitors from all over Chicago and beyond. The projection area will be the Art Center’s signature while serving many exhibition and studio needs by bringing art directly into the view of the community it serves. The idea is that the art created because of this façade will be a signature as well. Because of this, the façade system itself needs to accommodate many different digital art mediums to function as a blank canvas with opportunity for a creative manipulation by artists, visitors, and the Hyde Park Art Center to the full capabilities of the technology.

System logs are the primary source of information to understand and analyze system problems. Nevertheless, manual log processing is time-consuming, error-prone, and not scalable. Currently little study has been done on automated log analysis for practical use in HPC systems. In this thesis, we present a log analysis infrastructure by exploiting data mining and machine learning technologies. Our work can be broadly divided into four parts: log pre-processing, online failure prediction, automatic root cause diagnosis, and reliability modeling. We evaluate our results by means of system logs collected from production HPC systems. This work can greatly improve our understanding of faults and failures arising from hardware/software components and their interactions. It can further facilitate the reliability management for HPC systems.

Show moreIn a 2012 report, the President’s Council of Advisors in Science and Technology (PCAST) published a memorandum that calls for the identification of 1000 MHz of Federal Spectrum to be shared with private (commercial) users. This dissertation proposes a system that employs RF measurements for spectrum usage modeling and Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) methodologies that utilize the modeling information to permit sharing of wireless resources. A procedure called the Comprehensive Band Modeling (CBM) procedure is developed that automatically models measured RF data from any band of interest and identifies the locations of signals and holes present in the band. The output of the CBM procedure is summarized in a compact versatile format that makes DSA applications feasible. The research primarily focuses on the 450-474 MHz land mobile radio (LMR) band, and several additional bands like the TV band and the 2.5-2.7 GHz band. However, the research methodology and techniques are broadly applicable to many more frequency ranges. The research has four main areas: (a) spectrum sensor design and measurements, (b) occupancy modeling, (c) communicating the modeling information in a compact form to secondary users to support DSA algorithms and protocols, and (d) tools and metrics for spectrum sharing favorability analysis. Three spectrum sensor platforms were employed in measurements – (1) a spectrum analyzer based Spectrum Observatory (SO) that was developed earlier, (2) a specially purposed software-defined radio (SDR) for measuring LMR channels, (3) and a high-speed and portable SO system based on a sensor called the RFeye. An SO continually measures RF data in a band at a high temporal resolution such that the channel switching activity is seen – like, transmitters turning on and off. Spectrum measurements of the individual RF channels in the 450-474 MHz LMR band and the two commercial bands are used to generate statistical traffic and occupancy models. Long-term measurement data is used to assess how stationary the channel is, and how often the model parameters need to be updated. The spectrum observatory supports a network of Secondary Users (SU) by communicating the traffic model parameters in a compact format to the SUs. The SUs share Primary User (PU) channels via DSA techniques. The DSA algorithms take advantage of the model parameters provided by the SO to maximize SU throughput with limited interference on the PU. The DSA coexistence techniques are evaluated via simulation. The simulation results including Spectrum Opportunity Accessed (SOA), SU throughput, and collision rates are then analyzed to provide an assessment of DSA-based spectrum sharing in that band. The main contribution of this dissertation is the aforementioned CBM procedure. The white spaces in the frequency and time domains, that is, the underutilized spectrum opportunities available for possible secondary use via DSA are automatically identified, as well as the frequency locations that are not conducive to DSA due to the presence of frequent primary licensee transmissions. In CBM, white spaces are referred to as ‘Holes’, and the licensed primary transmission frequencies as ‘Signals’. Useful information about the duty cycles and traffic patterns of incumbent users’ activity within possible secondary use channels is extracted and modeled. The model enables prospective secondary users of white spaces to predict the expected level of interference in any channel, which allows for channel ranking and optimal selection of DSA transmission parameters. The CBM model is describable by a tiered structure, where the first tier identifies the holes and signals; the second tier ranks the holes in terms of available bandwidth and incumbent duty cycle; and the third tier models the infrequent incumbent transmissions. With the three tiers of information, an SU can readily identify all the suitable DSA channels within the entire spectrum band. This essential summary information is retrieved as a “Hole Descriptor Object” (HDO) that is both compact and tractable. Empirical spectrum measurement data obtained from the three different SO platforms is used to test the performance of the CBM procedure in the 2500-2700 MHz frequency range that currently has WiMAX deployments, the TV white space band, and the 450-474 MHz LMR band in Chicago. Spectrum measurement data runs into hundreds of megabytes or gigabytes. As such, the raw information is not very applicable in practical wireless networks. The HDO objects on the other hand are compact and only kilobytes in size. The HDO objects contain all the useful and applicable information necessary for any smart radio (primary or secondary) to select transmission parameters like frequency of operation and bandwidth, so that it can efficiently operate. Thus, the advantage of the CBM procedure is that it summarizes gigabytes of raw spectrum measurements in a usable compact format that can be directly used by practical smart radios to operate using DSA paradigms. Another advantage of CBM is that it is comprehensive and automatically identifies all holes and signals. The research findings are of interest and value to a variety of Federal and Commercial entities. The models and relevant model parameters for public safety radio in the LMR band have been provided on request to the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The DSA feasibility analysis methodology is of great national economic interest based on the contents of the PCAST report. The PCAST report recommends finding 1000 MHz of federal frequencies to be allocated for shared commercial and federal use. However, the technology for doing so and identifying the suitable bands requires measurements of actual spectrum usage, modeling the occupancy and existing traffic activity, and assessing DSA feasibility – these are important research aspects, and all of which are addressed in this dissertation. The results are of crucial importance to policy makers like the FCC and NTIA who will ultimately make the spectrum allocations decisions. A future network of commercial DSA SU radios operating in a shared band is likely to need access to a system to obtain live information about PU activity to optimally operate in the band with high throughput and low interference. The overall system, based on the CBM procedure and HDO objects, proposed in this thesis describes a framework for providing this information as a service to DSA networks, and hence the work is also of practical relevance to radio system designers.

The device includes a glucose sensor for measuring a glucose level of a patient, a physiological status monitoring system for measuring at least one physical or metabolic variable of the patient, and an automatic controller in communication with the glucose sensor and the physiological status monitoring system. The controller includes a prediction module for automatically predicting a future glucose level using data measured by the glucose sensor and the physiological sensor.

Show moreFabrication Laboratories (Fab Labs) were started as a community outreach program by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to provide digital fabrication tools for rapid prototyping to the general public. The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago (MSI) has partnered with this IPRO to further develop their existing Fab Lab. IPRO 333 has been assigned the task of working with the Fab Lab administrators to design methodologies for furthering the use of the laboratory and determining its end goals for both the museum and the community. Once these goals are established, we will support them with a list of projects that we will create and execute. By working with the lab directors to broaden the possible uses of the lab, we hope to encourage hands-on learning in local schools. This will promote membership at MSI and involve the community in science and technology programs and education. To accomplish this, we have broken into two teams, each of which will focus on a different audience. The first team will be responsible for designing and creating programs for more advanced and knowledgeable users of the equipment specific to the Fab Lab, such as the students enrolled in the Science Achievers program as well as museum members; the second team will be responsible for designing and implementing programs for less advanced users with more constrained timeframes, such as visiting families or groups of school children.

Show moreDespite the improvements in resources and communication in today’s world, many people still do not have access to mental health resources. Mindfulness, a type of meditation, has been shown to be effective at reducing stress, reducing pain, and increasing general mental well-being. Mindfulness has the potential to reach many people though internet-based interventions. However, more research is needed to determine whether mindfulness retains its efficacy when delivered over the internet. Participants engaged in a six week program of internet-based mindfulness interventions. Facets of mental well-being were assessed at various time points including mood state, anxiety, quality of life, mindfulness, and psychological inflexibility. Hierarchical Linear Modeling demonstrated that over time, participants significantly increased their level of mindfulness and decreased in their psychological inflexibility. Measurements pertaining to mood, anxiety, quality of life, and perceived stress did not change significantly. Nonetheless, results from the present study suggest the potential efficacy of internet-based mindfulness interventions and highlight the need for future research in this domain.
