Show moreSystems and processes for improved laser machining, such as micro machining, of a workpiece. Systems and processes involve directing at a first surface of the workpiece a laser beam and wherein at least the laser-irradiated region of the first surface of the workpiece is immersed in a liquid, and delivering to the liquid-immersed and laser-irradiated workpiece surface region at least a first ultrasound output from a first ultrasound device. The ultrasound output and the laser beam desirably impact the workpiece first surface substantially simultaneously.

Show moreCurrently, some motorcycles have the ability to collect information about the performance of the vehicle. However, this information may not be easily accessible to the rider or mechanic of the bike and may also not be presented in an easily understood format. The equipment used to gather this data is generally not inexpensive as well. IPRO 308 intends to develop an affordable device called motoPro which firstly, will gather and record important information during a motorcycle trip and secondly, display that data in a user-friendly, understandable format. This data can be described as a rider profile. The rider profile will not only be useful for improving the safety and performance of the rider, but will also benefit the mechanic and also possibly the manufacturer of the motorcycle. Team motoPro completed initial technological and consumer research during this 2011 summer semester. The team investigated current technology to see what solutions it may provide, began obtaining some hardware components for prototype research and also began interviewing members of the motorcycle community in order to gain valuable insights to use for the device. Some members of the team also completed the Basic Riding Course offered through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in order to become more familiar with riding a motorcycle. The project will continue into the 2011 fall semester and the team will continue consumer and technology research, create a compelling story with which to attract a sponsor and continue prototyping.

Show moreA coiled metal sheet is placed in a container, which may be thereafter evacuated slowly with the strip outgassing, and then the highly evacuated container is sealed with the coiled strip therein. The evacuated container may be stored until ready to be mated with a high vacuum process chamber. The container is brought to the vacuum processing chamber and is connected thereto; and the coiled strip is unwound from the container and passed through the vacuum chamber, where it is treated while under a high vacuum. The treated strip is then preferably wound in a highly evacuated take-up container.

Show moreOur objectives for this semester are to: (1) Develop a teaching kit containing curriculum to present the Ecological Footprint module and instructional materials designed to help teachers teach the module. Use the teaching kit as a means of spreading our module beyond our immediate scope, to high school teachers, college campus organizations and volunteer based groups. (2) Develop a website to enrich the experience of the module, provide a professional contact interface and deliver our educational message to a broader audience. (3) Promote How Many Earths and education on resource consumption by developing marketing plan, publishing stories in local media outlets and capitalizing on publicity opportunities. (4) Continue to reach out to high school students by visiting more Chicago-land high schools, continuing to present the Ecological Footprint module and beginning to present the Cradle-to- Cradle module. (5) Refine the Cradle-to-Cradle presentation by analyzing feedback and response of pupils. (6) Continue to collect and analyze feedback from students and teachers concerning both of the modules, our presentation style and the teaching kit. Use this information to continually enhance the learning experience.

Show moreA method of providing acceleration support to a combustion engine using an integrated starter/alternator. The integrated starter/alternator is in rotational combination with the crankshaft and connected to a battery system. The integrated starter/alternator is adapted to function at times as a power source adding torque to rotate the crankshaft to overcome friction and non-linear hydrodynamic forces within the engine. At other times the integrated starter/alternator functions as a power generator for subtracting torque from the crankshaft to provide electrical current to the battery system.

Show moreThe Swyne Project‟s objective is to extend the capabilities of the semantic search engine developed in the previous semester of this particular IPRO project. Proposed extensions include the ability to search for “entities” (e.g., people) and their relationships to other entities in a fact database and implementing user interface support for the extensions. Another goal of the Swyne Project is to work on our collective soft skills. These include, but are not limited to, interpersonal communications, presentations, management functions, and time management. These skills are all critical to not only a successful project, but also a successful career outside of college. Our search engine will hopefully be an inspiration to others who are interested in working on a semantic search engine in the future and expanding upon our results.

Show moreThe purpose of this project is the advancement in knowledge of, and applied practical solutions to the challenges of sustainability in regards to a very specialized area of water conservation. The harvesting of air conditioner condensate could potentially lead to the conservation of a great deal of both water and money. Pentair, a company specialized in providing water solutions, is interested in the technology to harvest the condensate from A/C in buildings, and is our sponsor. We aimed to create public awareness surrounding the potential non-potable use of air conditioner condensate through demonstration and presentation. The IPRO Team of Summer 2011 will advance the prior work by focusing upon building public awareness and working to change public policy. The Team will utilize social media promotional strategies/messages and implementation. The Team will also identify the practical and political barriers to main stream harvesting of condensate and develop action plans to overcome the barriers. The two activities of the Team will be to build public enthusiasm for condensate harvesting via social media and secondly to summarize all IPRO condensate efforts into a presentation with collateral materials and share it with organizations that have outreach missions of sustainability and conservation.
