Show moreThe overall objective of IPRO 340 is to improve the quality of healthcare by improving information technology at ACCESS health care. The specific objective of the Spring 2006 semester is to help to prepare ACCESS to adopt new technology. The first main assignment of the team is to determine employees’ current computer skill levels by refining and rolling out last semester’s computer Assessment Plan. Our second main assignment is to investigate training solutions and develop the training protocol that will bring ACCESS employee’s up to date with the computer skills they will need to adopt new information technologies ACCESS plans to implement in the near future. Our last assignment is to investigate various Electronic Medical Record (EMR) functionalities and compare leading EMR vendors to support ACCESS in deciding which EMR vendor to implement throughout their network.

Show moreThe first objective of IPRO 341 is to research four areas in which nanotechnology is being applied. Through this research the team will gain a basic understanding of the workings behind nanotechnology and determine applications which may interest our target audience (see second objective). The second objective of IPRO 341 is to determine a target audience. Since this semester’s team will focus on public assessment and education, a target audience must be chosen to present our research findings to. The third objective of IPRO 341 is to assess the current level of knowledge which the target audience has pertaining to nanotechnology. By determining what the audience already knows about the subject the team can organize and present the necessary information. The fourth objective of IPRO 341 is to educate our target audience. Public education of nanotechnology and its applications is the mission of this IPRO team. All previous objectives are part of this encompassing goal of public education. The team will work on putting together a tool for public education which can be used by the target audience to gain knowledge on the subject of nanotechnology. The team also plans to spread interest of the tool so that it may be used to educate the public.

Show moreNAVTEQ is the corporate sponsor for IPRO 305. NAVTEQ is one of the world’s largest digital mapping companies. With competitors, such as Google, NAVTEQ aims to outdo the competition by providing their clients with robust quality mapping data. NAVTEQ achieves this by employing over 1,000 geographic analysts who’s sole job is to ensure that the data on their maps is unique and, above all, accurate from each of NAVTEQ’s 80,000+ sources[citation 1]. On their quest to provide their clients with robust data, NAVTEQ has identified the need for user- generated content. This is data that a user of a GPS mapping system can enter in for themselves. With this recognition of usergenerated mapping data, NAVTEQ pursues the need to be the world’s most robust digital mapping data provider.

Show moreCancer continues to be the second leading cause of death in the world with one in two individuals suffering from some form of cancer within their lifetimes [1]. The main objective in most cancer therapies is to achieve a complete resection of the cancerous cells, which in surgical approaches is evident from the diagnosis of positive resection margins during postoperative pathology. However, pathological analysis is performed after the patient has been discharged. Thus technologies capable of identifying tumor margins in resected samples intraoperatively could substantially reduce the psychological and economical burden of “call-back” surgeries. As a step in this direction, a wide-field Raman spectroscopy system was employed, which has the capacity to discriminate between tumor and healthy tissue through a “dual-tracer” staining approach within the surgical window. The approach entails dipping the resected tissue in two tracers: one targeted to a cancer specific cell-surface receptor, and another left “untargeted”. In this experiment human glioma (U251) and human epidermoid (A431) tumors were grown subcutaneously in ten nude athymic mice. The data obtained from the Raman spectra of different tissue specimens were then analyzed through tracer kinetic modeling to quantify cancer molecule abundance as a surrogate of cancer presence. The salient finding in this study was that the model was able to predict the expected differences in EGFR concentration amongst the healthy tissue, U251, and A431. Kinetic model estimation of the ratio of EGFR concentration in U251 and A431 cell lines were in the ratio of 2:1, which correlates, with the expected ratio of EGFR concentration determined by flow cytometry which was close to 4:1. This technology not only promises to xii highlight tumor margins on a molecular level but can also be leveraged to analyze the molecular environment of the tumor to guide adjuvant precision therapies. Tracer kinetic modeling approaches were also applied to a guided precision therapy called Photodynamic therapy. Not only could the analysis of data provide parameter values for the tracer kinetics but an approach was also developed which with only a few initial data points could predict the time optimal for therapy in advance of the drug concentration maximum.

Show moreThe valence region is exceedingly important in hadron physics since this region not only defines a hadron but also is an excellent discriminator of nucleon structure models. Present uncertainties in light quark distribution functions at high x could also impact high energy physics. Here we will describe a new generation of experiments at Jefferson Lab that is aimed at the high x region of the nucleon. It is noted that the proposed Electron Ion Collider could explore the high x regime.

Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities. Three major projects currently hold latent potential for the school: the communications center, the sustainability wall, and the overall greening of the facilities. If these projects are completed correctly, they will become a catalyst for positive change. We are proposing to create a transition from library to communication center because of its isolated state in the school. The sustainability wall is two-fold in terms of benefit. It will upgrade the current windows which are lacking and will create an interesting learning tool. Greening of the entire school is the third project and includes windows, roofing, etc. to improve efficiency. Through the use of all three proposals, IPRO 314 believes in the school promotion and what enrollment it could bring.

Show moreSynthetic biology is a relatively new approach to genetic research where the focus is to build a simple genetic system with known processes and test it in a biological setting. This is in contrast to the reductionist approach where a complex pre-existing biological system is analyzed in an attempt to discover the purpose of each of the parts. In this IPRO, a very simple genetic system is being designed, built, and tested in a biological setting. Previous semesters have already accomplished such in bacteria. This semester's focus will be on building the system designed last semester and inserting it into an eukaryotic organism; the zebrafish. The main purpose of this IPRO is to advance the knowledge of biological systems and their manipulation. This is being done through the design and creation of a simple, but novel, genetic circuit, and the introduction of this circuit into an organism to observe its properties in vivo. In order to accomplish this goal, we have split up into 4 different sub-teams: Fish, Math Modeling, Futures and Design, and Construction

Show moreThe goal of IPRO 317 is to create an operational and business model for Urban Forestry Management. Presently, the future of Chicago’s urban forest is in question. While few refute the claim that trees are good for our community, allocating the resources to properly maintain or even expand our urban forest remains beyond our grasp. Our team seeks to make the urban forest a viable commodity in addition to its status as an asset. This would include examining the problem as a closed loop process as well as the sustainable harvest potential of the urban forest. The overall goal would be to create a business model that would increase the number of trees within the city, turn the revenue loss of tree maintenance into a revenue gain, and create a self sustaining model which will have the ability to stand on its own.

Show moreThis is the first semester of EnPro 350. Although the title suggests wood reclamation via arts and crafts, we have decided to expand the focus to reclamation via urban wood and lumber. We would like to start a business that addresses a need in the market for convenient removal of dead or infested trees in an urban setting. This encompasses all trees not located in forests or tree groves, and includes those found in urban setting. Often, the expense to remove one’s trees from his property is a time-intensive, confusing, and expensive process. We have decided to provide the service of tree health assessment, removal, processing, lumber certification, and marketing through utilizing the concept of vertical integration.
