Show moreThe primary objectives of the testing group are to: 1. Verify the flight tests performed during the previous semester. 2. Confirm the sustainability of the engine and the reliability of control. 3. Verify the ability of the VTOL to successfully complete vertical take off and landing. 4. Verify the ability of the VTOL to transition from vertical to horizontal flight. 5. Demonstrate free flight of the VTOL. It is very likely that in the process of completing these objectives, other problems may arise that need to be solved. We will focus our immediate attention on solving these problems, however our long term focus will be on completing the primary objectives

Show moreWe would like to develop a system that measures the applied torque at a bicycle crank set. In contrast to current solutions, we want to be able to retrofit our system to existing crank sets, obviating the need to abandon parts that the bicyclist already owns. In principle, according to preliminary tests performed at the MMAE department, this can be done using sets of quite inexpensive strain gauges. However, being able to get accurate torque measurements will require some advanced signal processing from the strain gauges. These signals can then be transmitted wirelessly to a bicycle computer like the Edge 705 that the global positioning system corporation Garmin released last year. There is a defined wireless protocol, called ANT+Sport, which has been developed specifically for the purpose of transmitting exercise data, such as power output or heart rate, to small computers. Chipsets and development kits for this protocol are also available commercially. Therefore, our task will be to find an optimal configuration of strain gauges that will be attached to the crank set, and to develop an algorithm to process the strain gauge data in order to isolate a signal that is proportional to the applied torque. This signal will then be transmitted to the bicycle computer for display and storage.

Show moreThe objective of IPRO-344 is the design of a wind turbine. To accomplish this, the following tasks must be completed: Selection of an appropriate site, taking into account wind availability, proximity to transmission lines, environmental impact, and the selling price of electricity at the location. Mechanical design of the wind turbine, including the blades, turbine, and tower. Electrical design of the generator, grid interconnection, and control system. A study of the economics of the design, including a life-cycle cost analysis.

Show moreIPRO 313’s objective is to develop a data ticker plant for our sponsor Townsend Analytics which needs to meet or exceed certain performance requirements. The data ticker plant has to have a sustained optimal throughput of three million price quotes per second and minimize latency while maintain specific constraints. The ticker plant aggregates streaming data for numerous global financial markets and disseminates the data to thousand of users in real time. The data is used in Townsend Analytics’ RealTick® Execution Management System (EMS), its flagship institutional product for the financial services industry. Thus, timely and accurate data delivery is a critical component to Townsend’s product and competitive position. Through research and development, the group will have a concept of design, prototype development and benchmark testing. Additionally, the groundwork will be laid for future development of the ticker plant and additional trading-platform components.

Show moreThe ultimate goal of the Zero Energy Lab IPRO is to design a universal format for occupying laboratories that utilize the minimal amount of energy. For the Zero Energy Lab to be usable at all hours of the day, proper lighting is a necessity. The installation of an appropriately designed lighting system, which will be both cost and energy efficient, will be a high priority in the overall scheme. A small section of the overall space will be the prototype of the design, which will in turn allow for the further development of lighting implementation.

Show moreThis invention relates to the metallurgy of iron and particularly to the separation and recovery of metals from electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts. While the invention discloses a process for the separation and recovery applicable to zinc, lead, cadmium and antimony contained in such EAF dusts, the invention is particularly applicable to the separation and recovery of zinc. This invention describes a method for reducing the zinc contained in an EAF dust, volatilizing the metallic zinc so produced from the mass of the dust, and reoxidizing the metallic zinc to zinc oxide along with the simultaneous regeneration of hydrogen which can be recycled to treat additional EAF dust.

Show moreThe IPRO 347 team intends to seize the opportunity given by Robbins Community Power (RCP) to improve the efficiency of the power plant. RCP plans to convert the facility from its original role as an incinerator into a wood biomass electricity plant. Working with RCP, the team will look at thermodynamic values to determine how to best utilize the excess heat generated from the boiler that currently radiates out the cooling towers. Additionally, the team will research and discuss possible solutions to be implemented on the 22 acre site. The intricacies that arise from the nontraditional nature of our plan require we split into two groups. One sub-team will look into exactly where the waste heat exists and the values of viable energy available in the form of steam or hot water. This team will seek interdisciplinary advice as part of the energy analysis. The second, but most influential, sub-team will predominantly be researching feasible outlets for the recovered energy. Some solutions they will pursue include supplying nearby greenhouses with CO2, providing on-site and local heat, and increasing the efficiency of the plant through drying processes.
