Show moreThis semester, the team will continue on the work completed in the spring 2005 term as IPRO 371. The main goals for fall 2005 are to further research elements commonly found in sustainable landscape designs and to create a comprehensive landscape design, composed of the three key areas of appropriate vegetation, stormwater management, and stream restoration at the IIT Rice Campus. In addition, we will research the economic implications of our design and attempt to locate potential sources of funding

Show moreThe primary objectives of the IPRO are to develop educational modules for an ISPO Category Three program. The Category Three program involves training Orthotists and Prosthetists who are able to build much need devices for patients. This program is being implemented in Bogotá, Colombia at Cento Don Bosco High School. We are trying to develop hands-on, interactive sessions that can be used as learning and review material in the subject of the biomechanics of human movements.

Show moreThe objective of IPRO 320, Sustainability Planning of IIT Buildings, is to contribute to the problem solving necessary to implement energy efficiency improvements in existing buildings and to the central steam and electric systems. Alternate possibilities for energy use in context with their building type and surroundings will be discovered through research of other university buildings at the University of Chicago, Loyola University, and IIT. This research will then be used in finding alternate forms of energy generation to secure the sustainability of the IIT campus.

Show moreThe objective of this IPRO is to investigate techniques for rapidly and effectively manufacturing casters to satisfy “rush orders” for special casters. Conventional manufacturing is based on part-specific tooling suitable for high-volume, planned production. Attempting to insert special “rush orders” into such an operation is very inefficient and expenses.

Show moreThe IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester is to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research and for the space itself to be able to be as sustainable as possible throughout research this semester. Since the end goal is a rather ambitious one, a more realistic goal is to have an energy plan for following IPRO’s to work off of and to have the space cleared so that the developed plan can be tested. The team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable energy systems. For this fall semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Research office utilities that consume low amounts of energy, and investigate how to improve the efficiency of current utilities. Research and test various energy efficient lighting solutions. Research environmentally friendly floor, wall, and ceiling finishes along with necessary office furniture. Develop a website to display the development progress of the Zero-Energy Lab and provide information regarding “green technology” Clean and prepare the 6,000 ft2 space for future inhabitants. Using the research, develop a program proposal for the Zero-Energy Lab.

Show moreAdapt-A-Yak is a small company that one will operate out of the owner’s garage. The company is not meant to be a job where one works 40+ hours per week. It will remain a very small company as it is more of a hobby based business. Adapt-A-Yak will be the first company to produce and sell universal power-assist products for sit-on-top kayaks.

Show moreA system for producing variable amplitude pneumatic pulses, such as may be used to prevent flow separation on airfoil and diffuser surfaces to control stalling, utilizes a source of pressurized air which is regulated and fed to parallel outlet lines. Each outlet line has a control valve therein attached to a controller for activation of the valves. The first parallel line leads to an actuator which supplies the pulsed air to a desired surface. The second parallel line leads to the atmosphere. By cycling the valves at about ninety degrees out of phase, pneumatic pulses of large amplitude are obtained with a simple device capable of being transported on the aircraft.

Show moreThe powered resonance tube (PRT) actuator and its variants are new developments in active flow control (AFC) technology. The PRT is attractive because it has no moving parts and can produce acoustic tones that have amplitudes greater than 150 dB over a large frequency bandwidth. The first part of this paper deals with the resonance characteristics of the PRT as a function of the operating parameters such as jet-to-tube spacing (Sp), tube depth (d), and nozzle pressure ratio (NPR). It was found that: (1) at low NPR (3.33), the PRT resonates at discrete combinations of spacing and depth. (2) Using theoretical estimates for predicting shock cell lengths, one could observe a correlation between the theoretical prediction for shock cell length and the spacing at which the PRT resonates. (3) At high NPR (4.29), for a fixed depth, the PRT resonates at virtually all spacings. (4) The frequency at which the PRT resonates remains approximately constant, regardless of spacing. The second part of the study focused on examining the directivity of the acoustic radiation from the PRT-significant for developing orientation strategies of the PRT with respect to the target flow in the end application. The directivity of the fundamental PRT tone and that of its harmonics were studied for a variety of resonance frequencies, both separately as well as cumulatively. It was found that the fundamental part of the actuation signal radiated predominantly in the downstream direction of the jet for low resonance frequencies. As the resonance frequency was increased from 3 to 12 kHz, the directivity changed from downstream of the jet to vertically upward, and finally upstream of the jet at the higher frequencies.

Show moreSupervision of batch bioprocess operations in real-time during the progress of a batch run offers many advantages over end-of-batch quality control. Multivariate statistical techniques such as multiway partial least squares (MPLS) provide an efficient modeling and supervision framework. A new type of MPLS modeling technique that is especially suitable for online real-time process monitoring and the multivariate monitoring charts are presented. This online process monitoring technique is also extended to include predictions of end-of-batch quality measurements during the progress of a batch run. Process monitoring, quality estimation and fault diagnosis activities are automated and supervised by embedding them into a real-time knowledge-based system (RTKBS). Interpretation of multivariate charts is also automated through a generic rule-base for efficient alarm handling. The integrated RTKBS and the implementation of MPLS-based process monitoring and quality control are illustrated using a fed-batch penicillin production benchmark process simulator.

The team will investigate diseases and their protein sequences in order to determine their function and whether it is suitable for drug targeting. The information collected will be created into an informational website that can be used in further IPRO semesters. With the analyzed data the team will begin testing several relevant sequences to determine drug targeting.

Show moreIn one exemplary embodiment errors due to tape flutter are overcome by recording along with the analog signal clock pulses having a rate sufficient for sampling of the highest frequency component of the analog signal. Then on playback, the reproduced clock pulses control sampling and storage of samples of the reproduced analog signal. By reading out the samples from storage at a uniform clock rate, the effect of flutter on the reproduced signal is eliminated. In another example the recorded clock rate overcomes tape skew and other mechanical irregularities in recording and reproducing multiplexed analog or digital data.

Show moreCompetitive cyclists around the world are using technology to monitor training data in order to improve their training methods. Power measurements are important to such training, however existing power meters are expensive and the cyclist must replace existing crank sets. Thus, IPRO 324 intends to develop a power meter that not only can be applied to any crank set but that will accurately collect and transmit data to current cycling computers as well as cost significantly less than comparable systems.
