Show moreThe study was designed to investigate how item writing would affect psychometric properties of personality measurements. New personality items were developed based on ideal point and dominance models, which were analyzed in the generalized graded unfolding model (GGUM), and two personality scales were constructed. Writing dominance items were slightly easier (more successful) than writing ideal point items, but this varied slightly by personality dimensions. Of three tactics for writing ideal point items trying to identify neutral items was less effective than appealing to an average or using double-barreled items. Scales constructed using ideal point items had substantially inferior psychometric properties as compared to scales created using dominance items, including lower reliability, lower validity and mixed test information results. However, lower validity of ideal point scales may be due to lower reliability of the measurements. Practical and methodological implications were also discussed in the paper.

Show moreBattery operated electronics with a controller are in need of very precise low voltage direct current [DC] supplies. Often times the supplies are realized by a twofold supply. The first stage is called a pre-regulator and has two main tasks. The first one is to produce a stable pre-supply voltage and secondly they are asked to be very efficient as they usually see the biggest voltage difference to the input voltage. The industry is currently regulated to develop more efficient power supplies, which drives them to using resonant converters. The idea of the thesis is to develop a DC to DC resonance pre-converter. To determine the most suitable resonant converter several two-element resonant circuits are analyzed. The analysis includes equations and graphs of input impedance, output impedance, and the circuit’s gain. The design with the best results will then be used for realization. The realization starts with basic simulation profile setups in OrCAD Capture©. At this stage the basic performance of each sub-circuit is realized, before adjusted for the required performance. For controlling the output voltage, a logic level MOSFET driver was implemented to be driven by a microcontroller. The microcontroller allows flexibility when it comes to specific timing requirements on the input pulse generation. For this reason a differential amplifier had to be implemented which gives the controller the feedback from the rectified output voltage. To validate the proposed design it was realized on a manufactured PCB. Since the resonant tank components are crucial for the performance they were realized by hand wound inductor with litz wire, and ceramic capacitors. The controller was realized by a xv microcontroller evaluation board. The control software is based on an example of the processor manufacturer. The measurements are showing that the inverter switches are showing significant switching and conduction losses. The root cause of this behavior was identified to be fast switching causing a big power drop across the transistors for the switching losses. For the conduction losses one major item were found in the high current of the resonant tank causing a significant power drop on the switches. It causes a major power loss of the converter and lead to decreasing the intended output voltage to avoid thermal overstress of the converter. Because the resonant tanks input signal is close to the desired waveform, it was possible to verify the functionality of the main converter stages. The results are proposing to narrow the input voltage range and the load variation to keep the resonant converter operating in a more efficient way. This can be achieved by changing the switching scheme for low load scenarios. Also a transformer could be included to keep the resonant converter in a more efficient range. Both improvements are intended for the next steps. With the microcontroller software in place it is possible to control the converter very accurate. Also performing the necessary controller optimization measurements was conducted with low effort. Noise issues on output voltage measurement caused a limitation in the control parameters. Therefore the control loop was set to a very slow adjustment, to achieve a stable output voltage. This configuration is acceptable because a pre-regulator usually does not see large load variations. The second stage has to have a xvi fast response time as it needs to react to fast load transients and needs to provide a very stable and precise output voltage at the same time.

Show moreThis thesis proposes a guaranteed, adaptive, automatic algorithm for solving univariate function minimization problem on the unit interval. The key to this adaptive algorithm is performing the analysis for cones of input functions that are twice differentiable. This cone is defined in terms of two semi-norms, a stronger one and a weaker one. Three fixed-cost algorithms based on linear splines are used to find the bounds for an input function and its minimum value. The estimated minimum value and possible optimal solution set are given by those bounds. This algorithm is guaranteed to provide either a minimum value within a user-specified tolerance or a possible optimal solution set whose volume is less than another user-specified tolerance.

Show moreTwo models are proposed to explain the development and maintenance of comorbid depressive symptoms for people with serious mental illness. Model 1 suggests duration of illness and cognitive insight will have an independent and direct effect on self-stigma harm and self-stigma harm will have a direct effect on depressive symptoms. In Model 2, duration of illness and self-stigma harm are proposed as the indicator variables with cognitive insight as the mediator directly and independently predicting depressive symptoms. Data from the current study were drawn from a larger longitudinal investigation examining predictors and correlates of mental health treatment decisions, including medication options. Potential participants were recruited from two community health centers and were screened for inclusion. Baseline and one-month data gathered during in-person interviews for 98 participants were included in the current analysis. Results of structural equation modeling found no support for either model. Thus, no clear conclusions can be made from these results. This study was limited mainly by a small sample size. However, other factors such as directionality or exclusion of certain variables might have also limited the results. Suggestions for future research are discussed.

Show moreIn this thesis, a new bioremediation concept is designed and implemented. Using copper (II) as a model pollutant, the concept involves the use of green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to efficiently collect copper ions from the environment, followed by encapsulating copper loaded algae with silica, thus reducing the bioavailability of copper ions in the environment. A proof-of-concept was established for this concept. In Chapter 1, a brief overview of bioremediation, current state-of–the-art bioremediation methods, and the mechanisms and applications of biosorption is introduced. In Chapter 2, the potential of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a copper (II) absorbent is demonstrated by quantifying the copper toxicity, copper uptake rate, copper uptake capacity, copper uptake conditions and effect factors, as well as copper release process from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. In Chapter 3, a method of encapsulating Chlamydomonas reinhardtii with silica shell using the biomimetic silicification process is described. The silica shell formation is confirmed by both scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and the fluorescence images. Finally in Chapter 4, the work in this thesis is summarized and the future research direction is discussed.

Show moreAlthough research on the severity and prevalence of depression among lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) individuals is becoming increasingly common, virtually no studies have examined differences in the experience of individual depressive symptoms in LGB individuals. Relatedly, research has not yet been done on whether depression measures function equivalently across sexual orientation. In this study, LGB men and women were compared with heterosexual men and women to assess the Differential Item Functioning of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CES-D) scale using moderated multiple regressions. Eight of the scale’s 20 items were found to function differently depending on the participants’ genders and sexual orientations, although the CES-D was shown to be an accurate measure of depression across gender and sexual orientation. The differences in individual items could not be explained by the variables proposed to explain them (e.g. race, social support, internalized heterosexism, etc.). Some of the item differences indicated differences in depression itself across gender and/or sexual orientation, although most indicated group differences unrelated to depression. The clinical and psychometric implications of these item differences are discussed.

Show moreWhile the wide range of social, economic, and psychological problems associated with pathological gambling are well-known; there is need for a better conceptualization of Gambling Disorder (GD). Previous research has shown that individuals with GD have higher levels of impulsivity than control participants and that impulsivity is a significant predictor of gambling severity. Given the strong link between impulsivity and gambling behavior, it would be informative to identify processes that would attenuate this association. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) constructs of experiential avoidance, mindfulness, and values clarification moderate the relation between impulsivity and gambling behavior. Two hundred twelve participants were recruited through an on-line advertisement to complete a series of questionnaires regarding demographics, gambling behavior, impulsivity, experiential avoidance, mindfulness, and values clarification. Results indicated that gambling behavior was positively correlated with impulsivity and experiential avoidance. In addition, experiential avoidance moderated the relation between impulsivity and gambling behavior such that the association between impulsivity and gambling behavior was stronger at greater levels of experiential avoidance. However, contrary to hypotheses, mindfulness and values clarification were not significantly correlated with gambling behavior; however, both values clarification and mindfulness were moderators at a trend level. The findings of this study provide a preliminary picture of how ACT constructs are related to gambling behaviors and impulsivity among a community sample.

These tasks will be completed so that a feasible use or uses can be developed for the condensate water. The use or uses will be backed by not only the collected data but market and business analysis as well. The uses for the collected condensate water and the data collected will be presented in a formal technical paper. This will include detailed information about the quantity and chemical content of the condensate. The uses proposed will be based on the amount of condensate produced and what Pentair products such as pumps and filters can be used to accomplish these uses. This will ultimately determine a „green‟ solution for condensate harvesting and will incorporate Pentair‟s existing products. The project plan is a report on the current work plan and the direction in which the IPRO is headed. This is subject to change as the summer semester progresses. It also includes a brief history and background about Pentair and condensate harvesting in general.
