Show moreThe ultimate goal of the Zero Energy Lab IPRO is to design a universal format for occupying laboratories that utilize the minimal amount of energy. For the Zero Energy Lab to be usable at all hours of the day, proper lighting is a necessity. The installation of an appropriately designed lighting system, which will be both cost and energy efficient, will be a high priority in the overall scheme. A small section of the overall space will be the prototype of the design, which will in turn allow for the further development of lighting implementation.

Show moreForced periodic operation of tubular reactors can increase conversion and yield if proper operating conditions and forcing policies are selected. A numerical approach is proposed for computing the effects of periodic input forcing by a shooting algorithm. Such computational tools permit the assessment of the benefits of forced periodic operation of a specific reactor system and the identification of the ranges of operating conditions where forced periodic operation is beneficial. This information provides valuable insight for planning detailed experimental studies. Determining the influential input variables and bracketing the ranges of the operating conditions for improving reactor performance will reduce significantly the experiments needed for selecting the most favorable reactor operation policies. The application of the numerical algorithm is illustrated by assessing the benefits of forced periodic operation to a CO oxidation reactor model. The results reveal substantial improvement in performance with slow cycling in feed concentration.

Envision yourself carrying around sensitive data (e.g., passwords, account numbers) on a flash drive that: 1. is secure from unauthorized access, and 2. will not attack another machine on installation (e.g., with a virus). A flash drive is initialized to contain user data as well as an application that allows these data to be manipulated in a consistent way by various entities. Show moreThe problem posed at Queen of Peace High School is one of sustainability. The IPRO 314 team will focus on the reuse and greening of existing school facilities and grounds. Three major spaces currently hold latent potential at the school: the abandoned convent/dormitory, library and inner courtyards, used correctly they can become a catalyst for positive change. It is proposed that the dormitory be torn down, in its place a “community center” would be constructed. The space will service extracurricular activities at the school, public outreach programs (i.e. youth groups, cub/girl scouts, etc.), club rooms and a new space for library books storage and usage. The second space being addressed is the library, given its current isolated position the space would be transformed into a communication and media center equipped with the technology necessary for worldwide communication. The third space addressed is the inner courtyards of the building. With six dispersed throughout the school grounds, they can become an active part of the recreational aspect of the school’s environment: places of social interaction, outdoor classrooms, etc. Additionally, the greening techniques proposed for the school’s facilities will include methods for efficiency improvement, education and school promotion.

Show moreThis is the first semester of EnPro 350. Although the title suggests wood reclamation via arts and crafts, we have decided to expand the focus to reclamation via urban wood and lumber. We would like to start a business that addresses a need in the market for convenient removal of dead or infested trees in an urban setting. This encompasses all trees not located in forests or tree groves, and includes those found in urban setting. Often, the expense to remove one’s trees from his property is a time-intensive, confusing, and expensive process. We have decided to provide the service of tree health assessment, removal, processing, lumber certification, and marketing through utilizing the concept of vertical integration. Two available technologies that provide distributed computing are Microsoft’s .NET and Sun’s J2EE. The objective of this Interprofessional Project is threefold: 1) to study both technologies, 2) to develop and analyze a list of criteria that are important to Bank One and how they develop software, and 3) to rate each criteria, which will help Bank One make an informed technology choice between .NET and J2EE, when reengineering legacy systems. At a high level, there are significant differences between these technologies. The .NET environment offers a host of programming languages and an integrated development environment. However, applications developed in .NET are limited to running on a Microsoft Operating System. J2EE offers one language, Java, but a wide selection of development tools. Applications developed in J2EE may run on several different operating systems. Bank One will have both .NET and J2EE available for development and by using Web Services they will be able to have separate modules communicate with each other.
