Show moreChicago is the third largest intermodal freight hub in the world. As a result, there is need for efficient routing of trains throughout the Chicago area. One aspect of railroad transport that directly affects the overall efficiency of the rail system is how easily accessible train intermodal yards are for trucks going to and through the intermodal yards. With this in mind, the overall purpose and objective of IPRO 307 is to improve the truck flow in and around an intermodal facility at Harvey, IL which is owned by Canadian National (CN) lines. CN is one of the six major railroads that serve the Chicago area. The intermodal facility at Harvey is surrounded by a network of highways including Interstates 80, 57, 294, 94 and 65. Interstates 294 and 80 cross directly overhead of the intermodal yard. In order to make truck flow around the intermodal yard more efficient, IPRO 307 will look into the addition of ramps and frontage roads, including a ramp that would be based off of interstates 80/294. A ramp connecting the major interstate to the intermodal facility would allow for easier access to the intermodal facility by trucks, thereby bettering the efficiency of the intermodal facility as a whole.

Show moreIPRO 303 is working on the user interface for SmartSignal Corporation’s software which predicts equipment failures in coal fired power plants. We are now in the third stage of the project. We are to deliver the user interface of the software based on the studies done by two previous semesters. SmartSignal suggested that we also consider specific elements of the software such as the clear presentation of developing fault information, and the efficient communication system between users. An appropriate UI will utilize SmartSignal’s predictive analysis software to provide an efficient and clear means for power plant personnel to: · Predict or identify equipment faults · Understand the predicted faults · Prioritize the disposition of the predicted faults or highlight urgent or important faults · Reduce the need for plant personnel to have many years of experience or “institutional knowledge” The ultimate goal of this project is to introduce an innovative approach to the user interface which SmartSignal can use for predicting equipment failures in coal fire power plants. To realize this, we set these objectives. · Research and collect information relative to the User Interfaces [UI] from the first hand users of the software while examining the study done by the previous IPRO303. · Create the Requirements Document for the UI in light of the concerns expressed by SmartSignal and the results of research. · Generate several possible UIs based upon the Requirements Document stated above. · Select one of the Several UI for development of details and revise it based upon the input from SmartSignal. · Add details and finalize the design of the selected UI.

Show moreThere are several types of framing that can be used on a greenhouse. The frames are made of wood, galvanized steel, or aluminum. Build-it-yourself greenhouse plans are usually for structures with wood or metal pipe frames. Plastic pipe materials generally are inadequate to meet snow and wind load requirements. Frames can be covered with glass, rigid fiberglass, rigid double-wall plastics, or plastic film. All have advantages and disadvantages. Each of these materials should be considered--it pays to shop around for ideas.

Show moreTitanium has been identified as one of the key materials with a high strength to weight ratio that can reduce the weight of components and thereby reduce energy consumption. Single press and sinter as a powder metallurgy technique has the potential to provide cost effective components. Armstrong prealloyed Ti6Al4V, HDH prealloyed Ti6Al4V, HDH blended Ti6Al4V powder and their mixtures were pressed and sintered at different conditions. The chemistry, mechanical and microstructural properties have been investigated to establish optimum processing parameters. Sintered parts were sent to Oshkosh Truck to test and compared with aluminum and steel parts. The Titanium and Ti6Al4V parts were successfully applied and tested. All the specimens passed the load test without failures. The sintering mechanisms of Armstrong prealloyed Ti6Al4V powder were investigated. At relative sintered densities of 75% to 90% (around 900°C), surface diffusion cooperate with grain boundary diffusion, which leads to densification of the powder compact. Around 900°C, grain boundary diffusion controls the sintering process. At 1000°C, boundary diffusion made little contribution to the densification of the Ti6Al4V powder compact. Above 900°C and below 91% sintered density, boundary diffusion controls sintering. Lattice diffusion dominates the densification process at higher temperatures (1100°C~1300°C). The sintering of master alloy blended Ti6Al4V powder has been investigated in order to elucidate the mechanism of sintering. Both blended powder compacts and diffusion couples were investigated using backscattered imaging and energy xvi dispersive analysis to determine the phases present and diffusion path on sintering at 1000ºC and 1100ºC. It is shown that transient liquid phase sintering does not occur and the reason for the rapid sintering of this material is due to enhanced diffusion kinetics resulting from a combination of the concentration gradient and stress induced by a phase transformation in the ternary system.

Show moreThe purpose of this project is the advancement in knowledge of, and applied practical solutions to the challenges of sustainability in regards to a very specialized area of water conservation. The harvesting of air conditioner condensate could potentially lead to the conservation of a great deal of both water and money. Pentair, a company specialized in providing water solutions, is interested in the technology to harvest the condensate from A/C in buildings, and is our sponsor. We aimed to create public awareness surrounding the potential non-potable use of air conditioner condensate through demonstration and presentation. The IPRO Team of Summer 2011 will advance the prior work by focusing upon building public awareness and working to change public policy. The Team will utilize social media promotional strategies/messages and implementation. The Team will also identify the practical and political barriers to main stream harvesting of condensate and develop action plans to overcome the barriers. The two activities of the Team will be to build public enthusiasm for condensate harvesting via social media and secondly to summarize all IPRO condensate efforts into a presentation with collateral materials and share it with organizations that have outreach missions of sustainability and conservation.

Show moreThe construction industry is fragmented due to the many stakeholders and the diverse phases involved in a construction project. On time, within budget, with required quality are essentials of a successful project. However, most construction projects are faced with delays, which obstruct success. To recover the damage caused by delays, both the delays and the parties responsible for them should be identified accurately. Daily window delay analysis outperforms other delay analysis methods, but it requires intensive day-by-day information. The information flow among the project stakeholders must be smooth and speedy at all stages of the production process not only to achieve the basic project objectives but also to let project stakeholders recognize the delays and the parties responsible for them in order to recover time and cost. The Internet is attractive for transferring information promptly and economically with no regional or temporal borders. To merge the power of the Internet and to ease time consuming delay analysis, a web-based application is proposed to analyze delays effectively and contemporaneously, to reduce time and cost, and to provide historical data. The application considers the day-by-day variation in critical path(s) during the project life cycle. The application gives accurate and repeatable results for apportioning project delays, accelerations and decelerations among involved parties. The manual effort required by traditional systems is minimized with the application’s simple, easy to use, yet effective and highly automated features. Moreover, the database structure of the application is designed to store and manage more than one project at a time to let its users calculate the overall performance of the company including all projects, and to calculate average durations for activities that can come up in future projects.

Show moreIn a period of growing transit operating deficits, increasing attention and concern is being directed at both the decreasing levels of productivity of transit systems in general and the broad differences in measured service performance compiled for various transit systems. The purpose of this study is an assist public transit managers by providing them with a mathematical technique to analyze the efficiency with which serviced is produced and the effectiveness with which it is consumed. By providing the analysis model which not requires an extensive amount of data, the operator can have tool for decision-making of profit and market growth. Thus, transit managers will be able to access the performance of the agency and areas where improvements can be realistically achieved. Using the urban operation of the Chicago Transit Authority, a transit performance model is developed to analysis efficiency and effectiveness of the city's bus system. As the system exists, there are 144 bus routes start and end, frequency of dispatching buses and ridership changes from Weekdays and Weekend, peak hour and off-peak hour. In many of these routes, vehicles are used inefficiently and ineffectively, only a few passengers carried in some routes in off-peak hour, yet in other routes through the Central Business District (CBD) area, there are always not enough buses in peak hour. Also, some routes cannot provide enough on-time arrival service and some special group like elderly and handicapped cannot receive enough service in certain area. The goal of case research is to determine to understand the transit performance of Chicago Transit Authority and to select the optimal improvement projects to maximize the performance in term of economy and social equity.

Show moreThere exists a strong demand for orthotics and prosthetics (O & P) in Latin America, with approximately 2.5 million people in need of this type of care. IPRO 309 was started in the spring of 2006 with the goal of helping to make this type of care more readily available. However, there are only 50 certified, and 1500 uncertified, O & P practitioners in Latin America. In order to become a certified practitioner, a student must graduate from an ISPO accredited program. Unfortunately, there is currently only one ISPO accredited program in existence in Latin America, along with several other programs that are not ISPO accredited. In October of 2004, Centro Don Bosco (Bogotá, Colombia), Don Bosco University (San Salvador, El Salvador), and the Laboratorio Gilete (Bogotá, Colombia) signed an agreement to establish the first accredited O & P education program in Colombia. Since then, Centro Don Bosco has allotted 3,500 square feet of space for the thriving faculty, classrooms, manufacturing training, and vocational workspace that are necessary for an ISPO accredited program. There are three levels of accreditation according to ISPO standards. Category III involves the design and manufacturing of orthotic and prosthetic devices, Category II includes the fabrication of the devices as well as direct patient care, and Category I includes production, treatment for patients, and research and development. The equivalent to ISPO in the United States is the American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC). Because it is independent from the ISPO, the ABC standards of accreditation will need to be taken into account in order to carefully cross cultural and national boundaries.
