Show moreThe purpose of this IPRO is to develop a robust, working prototype that can automatically monitor and detect a problem with a milling machine at A. FInkl & Sons Co. This IPRO is in its fourth semester and there are two challenges remaining: (1) alerting management to the detection of broken teeth during machining; and (2) developing spatial representations of items undergoing heat treatment. However, A. Finkl & Sons has asked us to concentrate solely on the goal of finding a way to detect when a break occurs in one of the milling teeth and then alert the mechanic monitoring the machine in order to replace it. This system will involve measuring vibrations using an accelerometer or by the use of laser detection. The goal of this IPRO is to research, test, and inform A. FInkl & Sons of the best solution to invest in, therefore they can decide what is better for their company.

Show moreThis is a continuing IPRO with the overall aim of improving and enhancing the image of Illinois Institute of Technology, both as an institution and a physical campus, in regards to sustainability and “green” practices. To that end, the current semester is focused on several design projects based on concepts generated in the previous semesters along with input from the current semester to enhance a new “green” campus. We will also be providing information on how IIT is currently acting in a sustainable fashion and how students on campus can contribute to our image as a sustainable campus

Show more3 billion people cook their meals over open fires on primitive stoves inside their homes. Indoor air pollution from those primitive stoves kills 1.5 million people worldwide. Furthermore, indoor air pollution is fifth most costly environmental degradation issue in the Peru. Previous IPRO 325 classes have made stove for Peru. However, the stoves made from previous IPRO 325 classes did not work properly. The purpose of this subteam of the spring 2010 IPRO 325 is to improve the stove and help Peru realistically.

Show moreThe goal of the IPRO is to try to find an inexpensive, but accurate way of measuring the power output of a rider on a bicycle. Problems with systems currently available are: some products are not compatible with all bike systems causing the need to purchase new parts, the cost of the available products is expensive, and some of the available measuring systems are not very accurate.

Show moreMultivariate statistical process monitoring (SPM), and fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) methods are developed to monitor the critical control points (CCPs) in a continuous food pasteurization process. Multivariate SPM techniques effectively use information from all process variables to detect abnormal process behavior. Fault diagnosis techniques isolate the source cause of the deviation in process variable(s). The methods developed are illustrated by implementing them to monitor the critical control points and diagnose causes of abnormal operation of a high temperature short time (HTST) pasteurization pilot plant. The detection power of multivariate SPM and FDD techniques over univariate SPM techniques is shown and their integrated use to ensure the product safety and quality in food processes is demonstrated.

Show moreThe purpose of the IPRO this semester was to further develop the prototype of a cardiovascular display for the prenatal to newborn blood flow system for the Museum of Science and Industry. The museum’s main goal was to have a display that would emphasize the changes in pressure within the body before, during, and after birth. To accomplish this, the group decided the goal of the semester was to recreate a visual presentation, which could 5 ultimately be on a touch screen monitor, and bench-top model as the display. In addition to the creation of the prototype, it was then brought to the museum for testing.

Show moreThe primary focus of this project is to help blind and visually impaired individuals to swim independently. The team will be divided into two sub-teams. One sub-team will create a passive device, which uses a mechanical device to provide tactile feedback to the swimmer. The other sub-team will create an active device which uses special electronic devices such as a sonar based device to help guide the swimmer. These devices will be repeatedly tested and updated to help increase the independence of blind and visually impaired individuals exercise and further improve their quality of life.

Show moreThe IPRO goal was to design a process for the production of the biotherapeutic compound IFN-Alpha from Chinese Hamster ovaries. After the process design was complete, a process flow diagram showing the actual process and separation steps was created and finally an economic analysis of the market feasibility of the product was prepared. The approach to the IPRO involved dividing the objectives into three major groups: (1) the Che 496 group was involved in the process design and the separation processes; (2) the Che 296 group was involved in the public perception of biotechnology, the useful products from biotechnology and the survey of the commercial biotherapeutic compounds; and (3) the 435 group was involved with the history of biotherapeutics, classification and actions infernos and the companies involved in the production of therapeutics. The individual members of these groups are seen on the team list below.

Show moreThe main goal of the fall semester of IPRO 331 is to build off the previous two IPROs in terms of scientific and global data while further enhancing the knowledge of the general public throughout Chicago and the greater Chicago area. The team plans on utilizing the past data (which is presented on iGroups) and creating a more streamlined presentation that covers all of the main topics while enabling the group to add more relevant and interesting information. It is the group’s philosophy that there is no reason to re-do what past groups have done in terms of research when it is already made available. This will allow the group to focus more heavily on the main goal of community outreach. In terms of the community outreach, it is still the same goal as the previous IPROs to reach as many possible candidates as the semester allows. Another one of the group’s philosophies is that reaching as many people as possible is the key to making this semester’s IPRO successful.

Show moreHuman noroviruses (HuNoV) are the leading cause of outbreaks of nonbacterial gastroenteritis in the U.S., and are often implicated in outbreaks associated with ready-to-eat foods, such as salads. Such foods may be extensively handled, and norovirus may be transferred readily between infected food handlers and food surfaces. The aim of this study was to investigate norovirus transfer between surfaces and romaine lettuce which were commonly used in the preparation of fresh food. Fresh Romaine lettuce was cut into 25cm2 pieces and inoculated with 25 μl (approx. 7-log PFU) murine norovirus (MNV-1) per leaf. After 10 min air-drying, 5 g piles of inoculated leaves were cut with a sterile stainless steel knife on a sterile cutting board. Sampling sponges soaked in Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle’s Media (DMEM) were used to swab blade and board surfaces for MNV-1 transferred from lettuce. In some cases, fresh, uninoculated Romaine lettuce was chopped using the contaminated knife and board. MNV-1 transferred to the chopped lettuce was recovered by stomaching in DMEM and enumerated by plaque assay. MNV-1 transfer was lower from contaminated lettuce to cutting board (p<0.05) than that from a contaminated cutting board to lettuce. This same trend was observed between a stainless steel knife and lettuce. The MNV-1 transfer coefficient was lower when contaminated lettuce was chopped on a wood board (p<0.05) compared to a polyvinyl cutting board. Norovirus transfers readily between surfaces common in the preparation of fresh produce preparation, but the transfer coefficient appears to be dependent on the surface type. This research provides the scientific basis for the development of a risk assessment model for norovirus transfer during the fresh food preparation.
