Show moreOutbreaks of human norovirus are commonly attributed to fresh produce and multi-ingredient foods that have received significant handling immediately prior to consumption. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of gloved and ungloved hands on norovirus transfer during fresh produce preparation. The palm and fingers of bare or gloved (polyvinyl, vinyl or nitrile) hands were inoculated with approximately 7-log PFU/hand murine norovirus (MNV-1). Freshly chopped Romaine lettuce was handled by the contaminated hands, and then sampled to determine the transfer coefficient. MNV-1 transfer was also measured from chopped contaminated lettuce to clean bare or gloved hands. In addition, pulsed light was investigated, in a preliminary study, for its ability to inactivate MNV-1 on the surface of food contact surfaces including the various glove types and Romaine lettuce, and thus prevent the spread of contamination. Transfer of MNV-1 occurred more readily to (up to 45%) Romaine lettuce than from (less than 12%) it. Transfer to Romaine lettuce was greater (p<0.05) from vinyl gloves than bare hands and the other glove types tested, while no significant difference (p>0.05) in transfer from lettuce to the different glove types was observed. The results indicate that norovirus transfer can occur readily in a food service setting, and that transfer coefficients are affected by the type of surfaces involved. MNV-1 was reduced by pulsed light by >4-log within 30 sec on all surfaces except nitrile gloves, indicating the potential for this technology to be employed in a food service setting to control the spread of noroviruses during food preparation.

Show moreIt is our objective to create a medium in which to combine the need of proficient web developers for university projects/ jobs as well as others looking for similar services outside of the university, with IIT students looking to gain experience as well as payment, whether through class credits or through wages. We plan to create a business model of a consulting firm that seeks out clients, as well as having clients brought to the firm, realize their needs, create a design document of their proposed website, then seek out the students with the capabilities matching the clients needs and “hire” them for the job, all the while maintaining that the quality of the student’s work will be sufficient to the client and therefore sufficient for our consulting firm. The start up companies/clients we gain will receive knowledge, expertise, and fresh ideas for a much needed website for their company/project. On the other hand the students will receive real-life experience working for a client in a certain timetable, with a standardized set of guidelines while also receiving some form of compensation.

Show moreIPRO 324, Disaster Recovery: Do-It-Yourself Home Building, is focused on designing a building manual to aid disaster victims in building new buildings. The objectives of this group are to continue the efforts made from the previous semester. This includes the creation of a manual illustrating how to build the design, design for handicap accessibility as a provision to the current design, to market this manual to a disaster relief organization that would be responsible for the distribution, to find a new client who would be interested in having this project built, and to find funding in order to build the design. Over the course of this semester, the team will be focusing on creating the manual and attempting to build the design at a site either in New Harmony, Louisana or Gulfport, Mississippi where potential clients are. The house at a bare minimum consists of a multipurpose room, a kitchen, and a bathroom; and will cost approximately $17,000. This is an affordable home/structure considering the cost of building a house now. The team is aware that some families are not fortunate enough to have a savings of $20,000 when these unexpected disasters occur. For this reason, it is an objective of the team to obtain funding.

Show moreThe preprint of a published article dealing with the effect of allocating Federal Depositories by Congressional district. Conclusions drawn include the fact that due to redistricting that occurs after each decennial census, over time some districts may have within their boundaries a greater number than the two depositories that Congressional district allocation was intended to produce. Likewise, over time shifting boundaries of districts have created districts that have no depositories whatsoever.

Show moreA peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing system is provided with an enhanced search method for a client node therein. A search from the client contains a primary search of metadata words and a secondary search of content file keys taken from the primary search results. The results of the secondary search are then used to rerank the results of the primary search before the client displays the results of the search to the user. Metadata distribution schemes can also be used to further enhance the utility of the system. Enhanced P2P file searching accuracy is thus provided. Applications for selective peer-to-peer communication may further be employed.

Show moreThe IPRO 311 Team’s overall objective is to create a conceptual design and branding of IIT as an eco-friendly campus, promoting sustainability to students, faculty and visitors. IPRO 311 is sponsored by IIT Marketing and Communication Department which seeks to portray a message of the university’s accomplishments in the area of sustainability and future capabilities. Furthermore, this project is driven by the interests of two IIT trustees with an interest to enhance the visibility of the IIT Main Campus from the I-94 expressway and other challenging vantage points (US Cellular Field, Sears Tower, McCormick Place, 2016 Olympics venues, etc.) Disney Imagineering is project partner participating with the Team through brainstorming discussion assisting the Team in building the IIT Brand. Initially, the focus of the IPRO was the development of signage that could represent sustainability and be situated at a prominent location on campus visible to the public. After several class discussions, the vision of the IRPO broadened, to develop an overall campus sustainable conceptual design, incorporating signage as one of the elements. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable concepts. There are several interrelated objectives: (1) Build IIT brand awareness and campus visibility in ways that are aesthetically pleasing, exciting and memorable. (2) Create an eco-friendly, self-sustained project that promotes general awareness of activities within the university among students, staff, faculty and the community. (3) Play a leadership role in supporting Mayor Daley's vision for creating a ultra-green Chicago by 2020. (4) Create an IIT campus sustainability plan for future IPROs to build upon.

Show moreIIT’s core vision is built around the principle that no matter how good we get, we can always improve. As the University seeks to assert itself as a member of the top tier of academic institutions in the U.S., there are many ideas for improvement up for implementation. Among these ideas is the goal to make IIT the most sustainable, urban university campus in the United States. IPRO 326 (“A Greener IIT”) is based upon the idea that in order to accomplish this, we must improve the sustainability of IIT’s main campus landscape.

Show moreIPRO 327’s objective is to create a complete set of drawings and specifications of a water distribution system for Pignon, Haiti that can be easily built and used by the town. This is a continuation of a spring 2007 IPRO, which completed mapping of the town. We now seek to design the physical water distribution system that can be sustained for twenty years. To do this, we have identified several factors significant to the success of this system that we will be focusing on. These include finding a water source that can provide a continuous and adequate flow of water, design of a pump and the power source to run it, design of water kiosks and faucets, and design of the piping network with erosion protection. User fees will also be determined for both public and private water lines. The water system will also be designed so that its output may grow with the population of the town over the next twenty years. Through our work, we hope to create a system that can be implemented by Pignon to provide a clean and reliable water source for its citizens.

Show moreAll 4 Kidz Enterprises is a minority and women-owned business based in Homewood, Illinois. All 4 Kidz Enterprises specializes in providing multicultural learning aids and children's books with audio CDs for children ages 2 and up. This is done primarily through its "Urban Kidz" series of books. The author, Angela E. Davis, is a retired elementary teacher with a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction/Early Childhood Education. Her passion for educating young people led her to develop a series of books that would be both educational and enjoyable. She is also a frequent visitor to schools, conducting "Meet the Author Day", where she speaks to both students and teachers about realizing their dreams. Angela's mission is to provide young children with books and toys that will enhance their learning and broaden their thinking. To that end, she has developed a concept for a line of learning doll called Tummi Pals. Angela has researched the market and has not found a doll with the attributes of Tummi Pal. Her hope is to fill the void left by the initial excitement of the Cabbage Patch dolls.
