Show moreThe objective of this semester’s IPRO 309 will be to incorporate three seminars into the framework proposed by last year’s IPRO 309. Fall 2010’s IPRO 309 proposed an educational curriculum that helped train individuals in Orthotics and Prosthetics in Categories I, II, and III. The goal is to improve on last year’s IPRO proposal and bring it closer to completion. Although the awareness of medical advancements is central, the well-being of patients is also of equal importance. Compatibility of medical devices and their psychological impacts on patients need to be understood by people involved in orthotics and prosthetics. Also related to a better patient care, it is beneficial to create a feasible way of tracking patient information. To emphasize these, seminars will be introduced consisting of materials compatibility, patient well-being, and electronic medical record keeping. Material compatibility will explore aspects such as patient-device interaction and minimizing negative reactions due to the orthotic and prosthetic devices, which includes rashes or other sorts of discomfort. Patient well-being will evaluate the psychological impact of said devices on the patient and help them incorporate the devices into their daily lives. Electronic medical record keeping will introduce technology that will enable practitioners to gather and track the patient’s medical records with ease. The main technology to explore for this course would be the Quick Response (QR) Technology that is incorporated in many smartphones today. These seminars will help increase awareness that orthotics and prosthetics are not just medical fields, but instead a series of professional relationships with patients to help them endure the difficulties and pains they are going through. The goal is that medical professionals will be able to provide the best care possible to patients, both physically and mentally. Additional improvements will also be made on the capstone design course, introduced in previous IPROs, by incorporating methods being used in capstone courses at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Show moreFor this semester IPRO 353’s purpose is to generate a steady public interest in the Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) that is located in the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) by reaching out to a target user base of retirees, inventors, craft hobbyist, and students. Feedback collected from these user groups will be used to create and establish a feasible program that sets out requirements for qualified users, provides new users with tutorials (or workshop), and implements a schedule for steady use of the Fab Lab by qualified users. The program will include a volunteer force such as a group of community service students trained in the lab that can oversea activities in the Fab Lab.

Show moreThe goal of IPRO 317 is to create an operational and business model for Urban Forestry Management. Presently, the future of Chicago’s urban forest is in question. While few refute the claim that trees are good for our community, allocating the resources to properly maintain or even expand our urban forest remains beyond our grasp. Our team seeks to make the urban forest a viable commodity in addition to its status as an asset. This would include examining the problem as a closed loop process as well as the sustainable harvest potential of the urban forest. The overall goal would be to create a business model that would increase the number of trees within the city, turn the revenue loss of tree maintenance into a revenue gain, and create a self sustaining model which will have the ability to stand on its own.

Show moreSpring semester 2007, the Manhattan Group came to IIT seeking advice regarding the improvement of their paper shredder. The paper shredders are manufactured in China and sold across the world, including the United States, under the Royal brand name. Each year, over a million paper shredders are sold. Consumers want paper shredders that are quiet and long lasting and are available at the lowest possible price. The Manhattan Group has asked us once again, the students of IPRO 321 and Professor Maurer, for the fourth straight semester to seek potential methods and problems in their shredder. These include improving the sound reduction, the gear optimization, and other features. The MMAE lab and machine lab will be used extensively for gear, sound, and material testing and design. Software resources, sound measuring equipment, and EE equipment will be used as well. Potential legal and/or ethical issues will involve patents and idea ownership. Since this a sponsored IPRO, all discoveries will be property of Mr. Seth Lewis and the Manhattan Group. This potentially could be an issue where this IPRO will be unable to provide necessary information to the IPRO office regarding work and progress due to ethics.

Show moreThe Interprofessional Projects (IPRO®) Program at Illinois Institute of Technology: An emphasis on multidisciplinary education and cross-functional teams has become pervasive in education and the workplace. IIT offers an innovative and comprehensive approach to providing students with a real-world project-based experience—the integration of interprofessional perspectives in a student team environment. Developed at IIT in 1995, the IPRO Program consists of student teams from the sophomore through graduate levels, representing the breadth of the university’s disciplines and professional programs. Projects crystallize over a one- or multi-semester period through collaborations with sponsoring corporations, nonprofit groups, government agencies, and entrepreneurs. IPRO team projects reflect a panorama of workplace challenges, encompassing research, design and process improvement, service learning, the international realm, and entrepreneurship. For the Zero Energy Lab to be usable at all hours of the day, proper lighting is a necessity. The installation of an appropriately designed lighting system, which will be both cost and energy efficient, will be a high priority in the overall scheme. Envision yourself carrying around sensitive data (e.g., passwords, account numbers) on a flash drive that: 1. is secure from unauthorized access, and 2. will not attack another machine on installation (e.g., with a virus). A flash drive is initialized to contain user data as well as an application that allows these data to be manipulated in a consistent way by various entities. Depending on the entity, different data are visible and changeable.
