Show moreTo provide confinement in a porous medium in the earth, a limited region of the porous medium is heated to drive substantially all of the free water from open spaces of the medium in the region. After heating, liquid material is introduced into the open spaces in the medium, which liquid material will set into a substantially solid structure. The liquid material is then set in the open spaces to form a substantially solid structure in the medium in the region.

Show moreThe overall aim of the project is to improve and enhance the image of IIT, both as an institution and a physical campus, as regards sustainability and “green” practices. To that end, the current semester is focused on several design projects based on concepts generated in the previous semester. These projects will then be analyzed regarding their appeal, both direct and methodological, to other members of the IIT community in order to inform the best model for sustainability develop to be promoted by future semesters of this project.

Show moreThe purpose of the research done in the IPRO 306 Mood Research Lab is to contribute to the body of knowledge regarding the patterns and accuracy of retrospective recall of affect in persons with Major Depressive Disorder. This will be accomplished by using Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) equipped with a standardized mood inventory to measure the recall accuracy in volunteers from the non-hospitalized, clinically depressed population and comparing it to that of volunteers from the healthy population.

Show moreThe IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester are to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research. The research conducted this semester will help us transform the space into a more sustainable working environment. Since the ultimate goal is rather ambitious, our goal for this particular semester is to implement an energy plan which will become the basis off of which the future IPRO’s will continue towards the ultimate goal. We also intend to clear the space so that the developed plan can be tested.

The sponsor, along with the team, has decided that the best method for addressing the local and global needs of the farmers is to present the research and design personally. Therefore, IPRO 333 will be fundraising to help finance the forthcoming trip to Uganda to present to the farming communities.

Show moreThermal stability has been proposed as a criterion to assess the allergenic potential of genetically modified foods, but there is a lack of information on the relative thermal stability of food allergens vs. nonallergenic proteins. This study compared the thermal stability of several paired food allergens and nonallergenic proteins by measuring the changes in their solubility, antigenicity and thermodynamic properties after thermal treatment using BCA total protein assay, inhibition ELISA assay, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Far-UV Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy. The selected protein pairs included bovine α-lactalbumin (allergen) vs. human α-lactalbumin (nonallergen), peanut lectin (allergen) vs. concanavalin A (nonallergen), soybean trypsin inhibitor (allergen) vs. lima bean trypsin inhibitor (nonallergen). With respect to protein solubility, a greater thermal stability was observed for: (1) bovine α-lactalbumin (bovine ALA) when it was autoclaved in water compared with human α-lactalbumin (human ALA) (2) peanut lectin when it was boiled or autoclaved in water compared with concanavalin A (ConA) and (3) soybean trypsin inhibitor (STI) when it was boiled in water or PBS, or autoclaved in water compared with lima bean trypsin inhibitor (LTI). Regarding TM values determined by DSC: (1) bovine ALA was more thermally stable than human ALA under both dry-heat treatment and moist-heat treatment (2) ConA was more thermally stable than peanut lectin during moist-heat treatment, while a greater thermal stability was observed for peanut lectin when the protein was under dry-heat treatment (3) LTI was more thermally stable than STI during heating in water or under dry-heat treatment, while a greater thermal stability was observed for STI when the protein was heated in PBS. Based on CD analyses, (1) bovine ALA was more thermally stable than human ALA (2) peanut lectin was more thermally stable than ConA (3) STI and LTI showed similar thermal stability. With respect to antigenicity, a greater thermal stability was observed for: (1) human ALA when it was autoclaved in water compared with bovine ALA (2) ConA when it was boiled or autoclaved in water, or under dry-heat treatment at 176℃ compared with peanut lectin (3) STI when it was autoclaved in PBS compared with LTI. In summary, allergens tended to be more thermally stable than nonallergenic proteins with respect to solubility, but there was no consistent trend in the relative thermal stability of these protein pairs regarding the antigenicity or the TM values. No correlation between thermal stability of the proteins and their allergenic potential was observed.ConA (3) STI and LTI showed similar thermal stability. Show moreThe project aims to convert the urban wood waste into an environmentally friendly, marketable product. The primary focus this semester will be to create visibility for urban wood through the connection of products made from urban wood to the end users. The primary drawback for urban wood is the perception of “no value” attached to the wood, which results in an epidemic of wasted wood, since nobody wants to use it. This project will research and organize possible production methods and uses for urban wood, which could create a business opportunity and jump-start the urban wood demand/market in Chicago.

Show moreWe have quite a few objectives for this IPRO. Our first objective is to research into both industrial and mass market applications of the Product Animations technology. After this first objective, we take 2 paths. The first leads to determining a screening criterion to select the best industrial prospects. We then plan to quantify the value propositions for the prospects selected from objective 2. When this is finished, we will create a deliverable simulation example, and finally write down any and all recommendations for future work with this IPRO. The other path leads to researching the idea or design of an ASP website. After this has been implemented, we want to use a PAI example of a milkshake machine, and show this on the ASP at IPRO day.

Show moreThe scope of I-Pro 335 is both a conclusion to unfinished work from the previous two semesters along with new projects that will start and end this semester. Work to be concluded and closed-out from last semester: Final LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) documentation and identification of individuals that might be part of a LEED team should the school desire to pursue that route. Final design of Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.) elements including a re-design of the elevator, and approval by the client. Using the Code of Ethics written last semester as a base line, the code will be rewritten to strengthen its objective to provide guidance for the I-Pro. New projects to begin and completed this semester are: The roof re-design- Green roof options. This may also include storm water retention and grey water recycling systems, as well as any updates to the buildings primary plumbing systems. Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) - Lab hoods, air conditioning load calculations and Hydronic Heating. Electrical systems design- Illumination calculations and design, Alarm systems, and ‘Off-heating’ load calculations from equipment to be housed in Alumni Memorial Hall (A.M.H.). Construction schedule. Cost estimate.
