Show moreOur objectives are fairly straightforward. If the genetic code can be called its own language, then we want to become fluent in it. The current technology does not allow us the ability to “write our own novel” (i.e. make a new organism from scratch), but what we can do is write our own pamphlet. This semester, we are trying to complete our test case, which is to create a colony of Escherichia coli that flash different colors all in unison. Once we complete this task, we hope to export this system into higher organisms, such as Zebrafish (Danio rerio). We are also seeking to move forward conceptually by planning long term goals for the Ipro, such as the development of not just test cases, but new, useful organisms.

Show moreFabrication Laboratories (Fab Labs) were started as a community outreach program by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to provide digital fabrication tools for rapid prototyping to the general public. The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago (MSI) has partnered with this IPRO to further develop their existing Fab Lab. IPRO 333 has been assigned the task of working with the Fab Lab administrators to design methodologies for furthering the use of the laboratory and determining its end goals for both the museum and the community. Once these goals are established, we will support them with a list of projects that we will create and execute. By working with the lab directors to broaden the possible uses of the lab, we hope to encourage hands-on learning in local schools. This will promote membership at MSI and involve the community in science and technology programs and education. To accomplish this, we have broken into two teams, each of which will focus on a different audience. The first team will be responsible for designing and creating programs for more advanced and knowledgeable users of the equipment specific to the Fab Lab, such as the students enrolled in the Science Achievers program as well as museum members; the second team will be responsible for designing and implementing programs for less advanced users with more constrained timeframes, such as visiting families or groups of school children.

Show moreLeveraging the existing technologies currently available in the marketplace enables the IPRO to create a team-networking solution that reaches more stakeholders and provides a richer, more enhanced venue for project collaboration. The solution devised by the IPRO must be easily accessible and interactive allowing for data capture, storage, retrieval and viewing amongst an array of end-user devices. To provide a successful solution, this IPRO will storyboard the concept over the summer, prototype the concept during the fall and execute usability studies the prototype during the spring semesters.

Show moreIPRO 324, Disaster Recovery: Do-It-Yourself Home Building, is focused on designing a building manual to aid disaster victims in building new buildings. The objectives of this group are to continue the efforts made from the previous semester. This includes the creation of a manual illustrating how to build the design, design for handicap accessibility as a provision to the current design, to market this manual to a disaster relief organization that would be responsible for the distribution, to find a new client who would be interested in having this project built, and to find funding in order to build the design. Over the course of this semester, the team will be focusing on creating the manual and attempting to build the design at a site either in New Harmony, Louisana or Gulfport, Mississippi where potential clients are. The house at a bare minimum consists of a multipurpose room, a kitchen, and a bathroom; and will cost approximately $17,000. This is an affordable home/structure considering the cost of building a house now. The team is aware that some families are not fortunate enough to have a savings of $20,000 when these unexpected disasters occur. For this reason, it is an objective of the team to obtain funding.

Show moreThe IPRO 311 Team’s overall objective is to create a conceptual design and branding of IIT as an eco-friendly campus, promoting sustainability to students, faculty and visitors. IPRO 311 is sponsored by IIT Marketing and Communication Department which seeks to portray a message of the university’s accomplishments in the area of sustainability and future capabilities. Furthermore, this project is driven by the interests of two IIT trustees with an interest to enhance the visibility of the IIT Main Campus from the I-94 expressway and other challenging vantage points (US Cellular Field, Sears Tower, McCormick Place, 2016 Olympics venues, etc.) Disney Imagineering is project partner participating with the Team through brainstorming discussion assisting the Team in building the IIT Brand. Initially, the focus of the IPRO was the development of signage that could represent sustainability and be situated at a prominent location on campus visible to the public. After several class discussions, the vision of the IRPO broadened, to develop an overall campus sustainable conceptual design, incorporating signage as one of the elements. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable concepts. There are several interrelated objectives: (1) Build IIT brand awareness and campus visibility in ways that are aesthetically pleasing, exciting and memorable. (2) Create an eco-friendly, self-sustained project that promotes general awareness of activities within the university among students, staff, faculty and the community. (3) Play a leadership role in supporting Mayor Daley's vision for creating a ultra-green Chicago by 2020. (4) Create an IIT campus sustainability plan for future IPROs to build upon.

Show moreIIT’s core vision is built around the principle that no matter how good we get, we can always improve. As the University seeks to assert itself as a member of the top tier of academic institutions in the U.S., there are many ideas for improvement up for implementation. Among these ideas is the goal to make IIT the most sustainable, urban university campus in the United States. IPRO 326 (“A Greener IIT”) is based upon the idea that in order to accomplish this, we must improve the sustainability of IIT’s main campus landscape.

Show moreRailroad tank cars are efficient vehicles for the transport of large quantities of liquid commodities in North America. These commodities include foodstuffs as well as a wide range of chemicals use in the process industries. Transport Canada and the U.S. Department of Transportation collaborate in the formulation of rules and regulations for the transportation of hazardous commodities. While the incidence of non-accident release (NARs) is very small there is nevertheless a further collaborative effort by shippers and car owners alike to reduce the incidence of NARs to zero. One approach in reducing NARs is to develop a means to identify small leaks immediately, while the vehicle is in transit. The IPRO team will identify and evaluate methods for detecting small leaks using car mounted sensors and alerting the shipper of the leak automatically form remote locations. This includes consideration of how to mount sensors and telemetry devices, log data, predict unacceptable trends and incidents, and report them in a timely, reliable and cost-effective fashion. The technologies involved in the development of such a system would include characterization of target chemicals, sensors and date transmission, mounting to the tank car, evaluation of the econ0omic viability of the concepts, and identification of potential legal implications.

Show moreThe goal of this interprofessional project will be to develop a test-bed system for a new device targeted at ECE 100 Introduction to Engineering. It may also be useful for an upper-level course in Hardware/Software Design for Embedded Systems. This course is being developed in response to feedback from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) that students need a major meaningful design experience involving integrated hardware/software design. An important aspect of this design experience will be the use of open-ended design problems that integrate a micro-controller with some larger system. Ideally, the students in this course would design and build a complete hardware/software system. However, this is unfeasible due to the time constraints of the semester and the cost constraints of providing the necessary parts. Instead, we propose to give students in the class a number of test-bed systems that represent an "almost complete" hardware system that requires additional software and hardware design activities in order to fully complete a system.

Show moreIPRO 327’s objective is to create a complete set of drawings and specifications of a water distribution system for Pignon, Haiti that can be easily built and used by the town. This is a continuation of a spring 2007 IPRO, which completed mapping of the town. We now seek to design the physical water distribution system that can be sustained for twenty years. To do this, we have identified several factors significant to the success of this system that we will be focusing on. These include finding a water source that can provide a continuous and adequate flow of water, design of a pump and the power source to run it, design of water kiosks and faucets, and design of the piping network with erosion protection. User fees will also be determined for both public and private water lines. The water system will also be designed so that its output may grow with the population of the town over the next twenty years. Through our work, we hope to create a system that can be implemented by Pignon to provide a clean and reliable water source for its citizens.

All 4 Kidz Enterprises specializes in providing multicultural learning aids and children's books with audio CDs for children ages 2 and up. This is done primarily through its "Urban Kidz" series of books. The author, Angela E. Davis, is a retired elementary teacher with a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction/Early Childhood Education. Her passion for educating young people led her to develop a series of books that would be both educational and enjoyable. She is also a frequent visitor to schools, conducting "Meet the Author Day", where she speaks to both students and teachers about realizing their dreams. Angela's mission is to provide young children with books and toys that will enhance their learning and broaden their thinking. To that end, she has developed a concept for a line of learning doll called Tummi Pals. Angela has researched the market and has not found a doll with the attributes of Tummi Pal. Her hope is to fill the void left by the initial excitement of the Cabbage Patch dolls.
