Show moreAn on-chip inductor device for Integrated Circuits utilizes coils on a plurality of metal layers of the IC with electrical connectors between the coils and a magnetic core for the inductor of stacked vias running between the coils. The magnetic core is made from a series of stacked vias which are deposited between each metal layer of the IC having a coil. The magnetic core desirably includes an array of magnetic bars comprising the magnetic core. The via material of the magnetic core may be both magnetic and electrically conductive. The magnetic and electrically conductive via material may also be used for the planar coil electrical connectors or other electrically conductive parts of the IC, or both, thereby lessening fabrication steps. Films of magnetic material may be formed at the ends of the inductor to provide a closed magnetic circuit for the inductor. A high Q factor inductor of small (e.g., transistor) size is thus obtained. The materials and processes which enable the on-chip inductor device are compatible with ordinary IC fabrication methods.

Show moreThe Swyne Project‟s objective is to extend the capabilities of the semantic search engine developed in the previous semester of this particular IPRO project. Proposed extensions include the ability to search for “entities” (e.g., people) and their relationships to other entities in a fact database and implementing user interface support for the extensions. Another goal of the Swyne Project is to work on our collective soft skills. These include, but are not limited to, interpersonal communications, presentations, management functions, and time management. These skills are all critical to not only a successful project, but also a successful career outside of college. Our search engine will hopefully be an inspiration to others who are interested in working on a semantic search engine in the future and expanding upon our results.

Show moreThe objective of IPRO 320, Sustainability Planning of IIT Buildings, is to contribute to the problem solving necessary to implement energy efficiency improvements in existing buildings and to the central steam and electric systems. Alternate possibilities for energy use in context with their building type and surroundings will be discovered through research of other university buildings at the University of Chicago, Loyola University, and IIT. This research will then be used in finding alternate forms of energy generation to secure the sustainability of the IIT campus.

Show moreThe purpose of our team is to save lives and prevent accidents involving construction equipment damaging underground utilities. We seek to do this by introducing the Enhanced Vision System, or EVS. The goal then for this semester is to design and build this system for displaying the location of buried utilities to the operators of construction vehicles. This includes producing a proof-of-concept prototype as well as designing the final product that we would produce. As this project is not merely an IPRO, but also an EnPRO, we are also considering how to turn this idea into a successful business venture. To this end, we will be preforming research and creating a business plan.

As opposed to the tradition of minimum design standards that just meeting the building code, highest practical design standards are the focus. True sustainability is the goal of this project, including; Zero Carbon Emissions, Net Zero Energy, 100% Solar Power, 10 times the traditional design life, 1/10th the maintenance, rot proof, termite proof, fire proof, hurricane and earthquake resistant. The project team, using cutting edge technology, will develop all aspects of a start-up design and build company to promote High Performance Green Homes. This project will provide a great opportunity for IIT students to experience a challenging and interesting project and to significantly contribute to a better world.

Show morePotential power plant sites can become more difficult to determine if water is not available in great quantity. This is true in western states where it may be scarce and competed for by other industries as well as households. The aim of this project is to find an economical, as well as environmentally friendly way to recover water from the flue gas, which is produced when powder-river-basin (PRB) coal is burned in a 750 MW power plant.

Show moreEfficiency in parking facilities has been set to low standards since self-parking was introduced in the 1950s1. As technology has developed, parking has been left in the past. Drivers are increasingly realizing the problem as they become accustomed to other technology, which increases the efficiency of their lives (eg smartphones). While driving around searching for an open lot, circling a garage for an parking spot, or wandering through garage a looking for a parked car, people have time to ponder the many improvements that should be made to the parking experience. Simply Park: IPRO 365 is taking initiative to seize the possibilities new technologies offer the parking industry. The result should be improved driver experience as well as increased efficiency and profitability of parking facilities. The system will include signs visible to passersby that display the number of vacancies within a parking facility. Once in the parking facility, additional signs will direct drivers to sections of the facility with vacancies. Colored lights above each parking spot will indicate the state of occupancy for quick reference when looking down an aisle. When a driver parks, the ticket they receive at the entrance gate will associate their ticket to the spot they parked in, so when the driver returns to the facility he/she can present his/her ticket to a kiosk which will notify him/her how to get back to his/her car. As the vehicle leaves the ticket association will be reset and displays will update to show one more spot available. Additional interfaces through mobile and internet applications will further expedite the parking process. 1National

Show more1. Determine the amount of force to cut 6, 8, 10 sheets of 20 lb paper, taking into account the width and length of the shred. Once the amount of force is determined, develop a computer simulation model that can predict the amount of force required based upon the following variable inputs: number of sheets, shred width, and shred length. 2. Through computer simulation or prototype development, design an efficient gear train that optimizes the number of gears and minimizes the motor size based upon data obtained from previous semester’s data. The goal is to develop and simulate a gear train that can withstand 500 cycles at maximum sheet capacity. 3. Develop acoustical sound dampeners or “tune” the shredder to reduce the amount of noise created during the shredding process, leveraging information obtained from previous semesters’ data. The goal is to reduce the noise output by 10 decibels

While past IPROs have focused on the efficiency and benefits of BIM for electrical contracting companies. Our teams focus will be on how the benefits of using these new technologies and other business development strategies can help guide electrical contractors towards improving and increasing their overall business endeavors in a recessional and competitive environment. We plan on concluding our project with a business development module presenting key successful marketing strategies. The developed deliverable is geared towards assisting members of our sponsoring Electrical Contracting Association (ECA).
