Show moreThe IPRO497-338 Team is to continue past IPRO efforts in developing Business Strategies for Electrical Contractors through the use Building Informational Modeling (BIM) and Green Technologies. Past IPRO’s on this subject have focused on the efficiency and benefits of BIM for electrical contracting companies. Our team however, will focus on the benefits of Business Development Strategies to improve and increase overall business– in this recession –in an ever more competitive environment. We plan to conclude our project with a “Playbook” which will present to our client proven, successful Business Development Strategies. This deliverable will help sponsor-members, from the Electrical Contractors’ Association of Chicago, to “get more work” – period.

Show moreRailroad tank cars are efficient vehicles for the transport of large quantities of liquid commodities in North America. These commodities include foodstuffs as well as a wide range of chemicals use in the process industries. Transport Canada and the U.S. Department of Transportation collaborate in the formulation of rules and regulations for the transportation of hazardous commodities. While the incidence of non-accident release (NARs) is very small there is nevertheless a further collaborative effort by shippers and car owners alike to reduce the incidence of NARs to zero. One approach in reducing NARs is to develop a means to identify small leaks immediately, while the vehicle is in transit. The IPRO team will identify and evaluate methods for detecting small leaks using car mounted sensors and alerting the shipper of the leak automatically form remote locations. This includes consideration of how to mount sensors and telemetry devices, log data, predict unacceptable trends and incidents, and report them in a timely, reliable and cost-effective fashion. The technologies involved in the development of such a system would include characterization of target chemicals, sensors and date transmission, mounting to the tank car, evaluation of the econ0omic viability of the concepts, and identification of potential legal implications.

Show moreThe effect of natural aging (NA) on mechanical properties in double aged aluminum alloys, AA7075, was studied by means of hardness tests, tensile tests and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) tests. Natural aging can strengthen AA7075 alloys after solution heat treatment, and reaching the stable condition can take years for the alloy. Double aging (DA) is very beneficial method in terms of energy savings and productivity because this method provides the peak hardness in a much shorter time compared to single aging, and DA treatment produces hardness, yield stress and tensile stress which are comparable with those produced by SA. In this study, the alloys were naturally aged for different times before double aging treatment, and the relationship between double aging treatment and natural aging treatment was observed. The results show that different natural aging times do not significantly affect the final mechanical properties of double aged alloys. Consequently, the loading time to aging furnace after solution heat treatment does not play an important role in the double aging treatment of AA7075 alloys.

Show morePeople are inadequately informed about their energy consumption behaviors in the home. Providing real time feedback at the point of decision making will enhance consumer awareness of energy consumption, and potentially lead to behavior modification. The IPRO 334 team will design and evaluate means of improving energy consumption awareness in the home. Team 334 will determine what metrics are most valuable to consumers and the best means to communicate that feedback.

Show moreAn on-chip inductor device for Integrated Circuits utilizes coils on a plurality of metal layers of the IC with electrical connectors between the coils and a magnetic core for the inductor of stacked vias running between the coils. The magnetic core is made from a series of stacked vias which are deposited between each metal layer of the IC having a coil. The magnetic core desirably includes an array of magnetic bars comprising the magnetic core. The via material of the magnetic core may be both magnetic and electrically conductive. The magnetic and electrically conductive via material may also be used for the planar coil electrical connectors or other electrically conductive parts of the IC, or both, thereby lessening fabrication steps. Films of magnetic material may be formed at the ends of the inductor to provide a closed magnetic circuit for the inductor. A high Q factor inductor of small (e.g., transistor) size is thus obtained. The materials and processes which enable the on-chip inductor device are compatible with ordinary IC fabrication methods.

Show moreThe Swyne Project‟s objective is to extend the capabilities of the semantic search engine developed in the previous semester of this particular IPRO project. Proposed extensions include the ability to search for “entities” (e.g., people) and their relationships to other entities in a fact database and implementing user interface support for the extensions. Another goal of the Swyne Project is to work on our collective soft skills. These include, but are not limited to, interpersonal communications, presentations, management functions, and time management. These skills are all critical to not only a successful project, but also a successful career outside of college. Our search engine will hopefully be an inspiration to others who are interested in working on a semantic search engine in the future and expanding upon our results.

Show moreThe objective of IPRO 320, Sustainability Planning of IIT Buildings, is to contribute to the problem solving necessary to implement energy efficiency improvements in existing buildings and to the central steam and electric systems. Alternate possibilities for energy use in context with their building type and surroundings will be discovered through research of other university buildings at the University of Chicago, Loyola University, and IIT. This research will then be used in finding alternate forms of energy generation to secure the sustainability of the IIT campus.

Show moreThe purpose of our team is to save lives and prevent accidents involving construction equipment damaging underground utilities. We seek to do this by introducing the Enhanced Vision System, or EVS. The goal then for this semester is to design and build this system for displaying the location of buried utilities to the operators of construction vehicles. This includes producing a proof-of-concept prototype as well as designing the final product that we would produce. As this project is not merely an IPRO, but also an EnPRO, we are also considering how to turn this idea into a successful business venture. To this end, we will be preforming research and creating a business plan.

The current goal is to further develop the capabilities of our web based program that can be used by organizations to assist when determining how well their crisis management plans stand up to different methodologies, assessments, and scenarios during the testing process. Also to start marketing our web site to attract a community of many users to assist in the growth of the CMS program. The initial grant for this project was funded by the Homeland Security Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center. Ms. Irene Rozansky, CEO and founder of R&A Crisis Management Services Inc. will be our sponsor to ensure that we develop a program able to test existing crisis management plans for companies, organizations, and individuals who lack a response ready approach in times of crisis.
