Show moreIPRO 313 Advanced Systems Applied to Student Loan Rehabilitation Processes worked with the IPRO sponsor Financial Management Systems Company (FMS) to to design and build a student loan rehabilitation tool. FMS is primarily a collections company that is growing rapidly. Each year FMS receives accounts from private and government agencies and must collect from those accounts in order to receive a commission, their payment. The IPRO team had met with the sponsor many times over the course of the semester to gather requirements, map and layout FMS’ process model and in general have a better understanding of what FMS does. The team needed a better understanding of the problem and what the problem meant for FMS. FMS is in need of a tool that is able to track accounts over the course of their loan rehabilitation program quickly and effectively allow the tracking of trends over a period of time.

Show moreThe plan for this IPRO is to develop a design for a large scale parking garage that can accommodate about 500 cars. The objective of this project is to develop a design that goes beyond the standard parking systems used today. Rather, the attempt is to have a design which is more representative of “parking garages of future.” And as such, such features as quick handling of incoming and outgoing cars, efficiency in storage and aesthetics are considered in design. The building will be completely self-sufficient and will have to incorporate the architecture of the various buildings on campus. The design could have separate entrance and exit ramp towers, ramps incorporated with parking, or the futuristic design may be automated. An automated system will include a vehicle elevator of lift system to move the vehicle so the driver does not have to. The structure could be built with reinforced concrete or steel. The design will also include accessibility following the requirements set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Show moreIPRO 332’s objective is to develop the groundwork for a tool, to be implemented either in Chicago Public School classrooms or community centers, which will deliver balanced, non-biased information to its constituents about energy issues that affect their daily lives. We seek to do this, firstly, by familiarizing ourselves with the most pressing energy issues, identifying knowledge deficits concerning these issues, and selecting areas around which our concentrated effort will be most productive. Second, we will be studying current teaching methodologies and technologies in order to ensure our tool is as effective as possible. And, finally, we will identify companies, agencies and organizations currently working to deliver energy information, and learn from their expertise and experience. Through this research, we hope to learn from those currently endeavoring to spread fact-based information about energy, while developing a program of our own that ascribes to the requirements of the Chicago Public Schools’ Curriculum guidelines.

Show moreOptimum antenna-like exciters for heating earth media which may be used to recover hydrocarbons. A high frequency power supply is connected to an exciter emplaced in the subsurface formation which radiates high frequency power. The exciters include one or more conducting cylinders which make up monopole and dipole antenna-like apparatus. Substantially uniform heating of the subsurface formation is provided thus suppressing excessive heating of edge and power input regions. The equal distribution of electric fields eliminates intense electric fields which would normally exist thus mitigating excessively heated regions and providing substantially uniform heating of the subsurface formation.

Show moreThe mission of IPRO 363 - Language Link is to develop a social network website that connects IIT students to learn languages, integrate cultures and build friendships. The basis for this solution is an online framework allowing students to build a personal profile, matching people based on common interests, goals, schedules, and other factors, so as to promote and improve language learning via natural every-day interaction and use of languages. The envisioned efficacy of Language Link is based on the theory of immersion, which is widely regarded as the best way to learn a language[1]. As the developers of the website, we will provide a matching system based on pairing algorithms in order to allow each user to build a relationship with a student most equipped to facilitate language learning, so that the immersion process can really begin. Language Link will not be designed to equip users with lessons, translations or vocabulary; rather, the site is envisioned as a social networking site connecting those that are interested in teaching, learning and studying languages. We plan to start off providing this service to IIT affiliates. As the project progresses we hope to extend Language Link to other city colleges as well.

Secondary Objectives The secondary objectives are necessary for accomplishing the primary objective. To ensure that the program will be accredited, many guidelines must be followed; these guidelines have set the secondary objectives as follows: • Develop several educational modules concerning common diseases and their orthotic treatments • Develop several low-cost demonstrations and hand-outs to compliment the educational modules • Carefully follow ISPO requirements to ensure accreditation • Translate all material to Spanish for use in Latin America • Develop a three day short course to be presented at a Prosthetics and Orthotics conference at Bogotá, Colombia in May 2007 • Work with educators in Colombia to develop a program similar to IPRO 309

Show moreFabrication Laboratories, or Fab Labs, were started as a community outreach program by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology providing digital fabrication tools for rapid prototyping to the general public. The Museum of Science and Industry has partnered with IPRO to further develop the Fab Lab at their site. IPRO 333 has been rendered the task of working with the administration in the Fab lab of MSI to design methodologies for furthering the use of the laboratory and assisting in determining its end goals for both the museum and the community by working with the lab directors to broaden the possible uses of the lab, promoting membership at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, and involving the community in science and technology programs at the museum. In order to accomplish our tasks we have broken into three main teams, each of which will focus on a different aspect of the lab. The first team will be responsible for creating events specific to the museum members, creating proposals for low‐cost, high‐profit activities for the lab, and possibly creating a website where users of the lab may sign up for time in the lab, reserve or order materials, and rent storage space for long term projects they wish to work on. The second team is responsible for integrating the Fab Lab into the current working exhibits as well as future exhibitions. The third team will be responsible for designing and creating new programs for users of the Fab Lab, such as the students enrolled in the Science Achievers program or museum members.

Show moreThe objective is to develop and apply an organic matter degradation model (OMDM) that predicts changes in the biological degradation of organic matter added to soils as a function of soil temperature, moisture content and mineral surface area using data from field and laboratory measurements. A one year long laboratory study was conducted to determine biosolids microbial degradation rates (21 ˚C and 20% moisture content) for soils from eight different fields Biosolids microbial degradation rates were also determined for the eight soils under field condition (10 ˚C and 10% moisture content) by applying a degradation rate model (DRM). The total mineral surface areas for 27 soil samples were also determined. Regression analysis revealed that the degradation rate was positively associated with mineral soil surface area (R2=0.85) and that the biosolids application rate is not significantly associated with the biosolids degradation rate (p value =0.35>0.01). The OMDM determines a decomposition rate of 1.04 yr-1 at 30 ˚C, 20% moisture content, and 10 m2/g soil and provides correction factors for changes in soil temperature, moisture, and mineral surface area. The model predicted in changes of the biological degradation rate of biosolids added to soils with mineral surface areas that vary from 1 to 10 m2/g soil under laboratory and field conditions. A comparison of the measured and simulated degradation rates for eight different soils produced R2 = 0.87 for field data. The model was also able to predict the degradation rate of biosolids for 19 additional soils under field conditions (R2=0.89). The model was also applied to agricultural plant litter. The estimated degradation rates are 0.45 yr-1 corn stover, 0.35 yr-1 oats, 0.26 yr-1 wheat, and 0.13 yr-1 millet at 30 ˚C, 20% moisture content and 10 m2/g. This study demonstrates that the effects of environmental conditions and soil mineral surface area have a significant impact on degradation rates of organic matter and must be considered when assessing degradation rates for organic matter added to soil. Higher temperatures and moisture content and finer soils are related to larger degradation rates.
